Stephen Colbert is holding a rally: the March to Keep Fear Alive.
It began with a Reddit comment. Next there was a website seeking donations for Donors Choose, a charity Mr Colbert is known to support.
The donations kept growing until then man himself sent a personal message of thanks for the donations.
The total amount raised currently sits just below $240,000, and Jon Stewart has joined the cause with his Rally to Restore Sanity.

I'm not so sure this is a double -- that is, it could have referred more to the rally. Or, rather, the COMPETING rallies between Colbert and Stewart.

How about a sign that reads, "I've given it some thought, and I'm pretty interested in the ways in which my country is changing, and I'm excited to see where it goes." Maybe a bit punchier.

If profit is their main (only?) motive -- is that what being "all about the money" means to you? it's a sloppy phrase -- they hide it well, because to me they seem to be motivated by more than just money. They appear to have a great time entertaining people by using sharp jabs of humor and truth to deflate evil idiots.

Colbert is an entertainer who uses satire. Glenn Beck is an entertainer. Both of them are using the heat of American politics to make a buck. Beck is doing it in a crowded field so this has to give him an edge in the voting.
Nothing wrong with it. I admire both of them for developing an audience and making a living as entertainers, but I do not allow myself to be fooled into thinking that these are genuine political voices.

Not sure whether to begin by criticizing your use of "genuine," "political," or "voices." Nobody in politics is motivated purely out of some unadulterated desire to lead their fellow citizens or do good in the world. Also, just because somebody is motivated by money does not make them ingenuine, nor does it make them not political, or not a legitimate voice. Newsflash: Money plays a large part in politics.

It's an interesting comparison, but it seems clear from Beck's Goldline controversy that he is primarily interested in the money in a way that Colbert does not appear to be.

Glenn Beck held his "rally" in front the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech. From what I read, it was a political rally, organized, promoted, and lead by an absolutely shameless self-promotor. Jimmy Swaggart never got close to doing what this Beck guy is doing. The man has talent and it scares me that so many people see him as a genuine political voice - i.e., someone who speaks for, represents the views of, and has the support of a sizeable portion of the Republic.
Colbert is also talented, but he hasn't got Glenn Beck talent, or maybe his audience is tougher. In any event, Colbert's subject rally is Colbert Inc. taking the opportunity Beck Inc. created to promote the Colbert Inc. brand. Indeed, by convoying on Beck's hard work, he is also showing himself to be the less capable entertainer.
So while Colbert makes money mocking Beck, it is Beck who owns the right to mock Colbert.

Since I took the bait I feel bad saying this, but it seriously is not worth it. You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into, and generalized "Aw man you people can't see you're just a bunch of sheep" is no more the product of reason than "People didn't like my band because they just couldn't understand it."

Beck is a demagogue who sometimes calls himself an entertainer in order to excuse away his bullying as jokes and his lack of real information as something allowable, as he is not a journalist. Comparing Beck and Colbert, as though the two had any common ground besides the fact that the both address politics on television, is exceptionally shallow, as is your unsupported dismissal of Colbert, as though he and Beck, by virtue of their superficial similarities, had exactly the same motivations.

Um... Colbert does satire. By definition satire has to comment on, riff on, "convoy on" things that other people have said or done. Otherwise it's just a joke.

Even if this is "all about the money" (to which I say: grar), I can't imagine this event will be anything but a Good Idea, not least because it very easily has the potential to show that rational, sane, silent-majority people can come together in numbers that are very likely to dwarf those of Beck's rally to send the simple but vital message that we speak for many more Americans than the Teafolk do and to their fulminations we say "ha."

It's certainly possible, but it seems the idea for the rally genuinely began with a comment on Reddit. Also, I think it's a bit generous to refer to what happened at Beck's rally a 'wave'.

I think this perception is exactly the reason why they decided to have two rallies. One that mocks (I mean, come on, it's comedy gold), and one that says what really needs to be said - which is that the national conversation has gotten out of hand.
Which is kind of odd, since I think that Stewart actually does the better Beck impersonation. But I see the motivation, which brilliantly takes the original reddit idea and gives it purpose.

I don't know if it was because they're "all about the money". But they are scabs.
The bottom line, though, is that every joke on the shows this week was made while the writers remained on the picket lines without pay, and as Stewart and Colbert continued to collect paychecks.

The Colbert Report actually started as a satire of Bill O'Reilly's show. That's where his "The Wørd" segment comes from, that's where most of his tone is drawn from, that's where his persona of arrogance and shouting down of guests during interviews comes from, that's where his "on notice" and "dead to me" boards and his Threatdown schticks come from.
The fact that this rally is a parody of Glenn Beck's event... well, it's interesting, isn't it? There were no plans to hold this rally. But the viewership of these two shows (supposedly around 2 million people nightly, although I suspect it may be higher) saw an opportunity for a real life culture jam parody and DEMANDED that Colbert hold this rally. Interesting, when the audience who respects and appreciates the work of a satirist sees a clear target for that person's work and wants to take full advantage of it to help drive that artist's satirical point home. Or I think it is, anyway.
i'm tickled that they're holding this rally. I think they'll do it right. At the very least, it won't be a weepy pseudo-religious partially political event where the main speakers are wearing kevlar vests out of fear... It should be a great time, and may end up being Important on some level. I'd like to think so, anyway.
And seriously, three blind mice... how much Stewart and Colbert do you even watch? Your comments are pretty tone deaf, as if you're describing classical music and only have ever listened to Britney Spears.

The strike was particularly devastating to crew, even more so on basic cable shows where pay is already lower, and the vast majority of writers I know didn't begrudge their decisions to return. I don't know if it was because they're "all about the money". But they are scabs.
I seem to remember that the strike was by writers, and Stewart returned to the show under the stricture that nobody else be able to write the material he presented, and he might even have been forbidden from actually writing the show, but instead could only plan it out in bare bones fashion and had to improvise on the air.
I remember those shows particularly being a turning point in a lot of ways. Stewart's tone was markedly different, and his political analysis was a lot sharper and darker. Less jokey stuff, with a lot more actual insight being shared. I think it emboldened him, in a lot of ways, when the audience seemed to appreciate that the humor wasn't always necessary for the point to be well-taken.
And yes, the start-up of the shows during the strike was specifically so the rest of the crew that WASN'T the writers wouldn't suffer. I remember that they even did segments by the writers (many of whom are also on-air personalities for TDS) FROM the picket lines.
They weren't trying to soft-peddle the strike. They weren't trying to work around it. They were using the show as a platform to provide a voice for those who were striking.
You're welcome to your opinion about the situation, but I'm not sure that it's one which actually is in line with the reality of what went on.

Colbert is also talented, but he hasn't got Glenn Beck talent, or maybe his audience is tougher. In any event, Colbert's subject rally is Colbert Inc. taking the opportunity Beck Inc. created to promote the Colbert Inc. brand. Indeed, by convoying on Beck's hard work, he is also showing himself to be the less capable entertainer.Let me see if I understand your argument: Colbert is morally no better then Glen Beck. Also, I've noticed more and more that whenever "legitimate" news services do a story on Stewart or Colbert, they intentionally adopt this faux-out-of-touch naivete that clearly says, "don't take these guys seriously!" And I understand, since those guys have made their message entirely on calling bullshit on the "legitimate" media.
But let's be honest here. Among other things, Colbert was the guy who shook the White House by telling truth to power at the Correspondents' Dinner. Stewart was able to completely change the perceptions of Tucker Carlson and Jim Cramer. Stewart had four guests this past week. One of them was Tony Blair. Another was Bill Clinton.
So yes, they are comedians, but they are absolutely political voices as well, and more powerful and formidable ones than they are given credit for.
(That said, I hope this doesn't turn out to be a Scott Pilgrim/Snakes on a Plane type of thing.)

That reminds me of my favorite placard ever: at a Gay Day parade in San Francisco some time in the late 90's, in the midst of the floats and bombast, one small man marched up the center of the street, proud and entirely alone, with a sign that said: GAYS WITHOUT DATES.

1) with regard to throwing: only soft things up; never hard things at
2) with regard to other people's feelings: no poking the bunnies with a stick
3) anyone mesmerized by a lamp is not allowed to drive

Television comedian Stephen Colbert has gotten famous by using his trademark conservative faux-outrage to label the United States Congress as a joke.Video.
On Friday, a House subcommittee – maybe, sort of, actually we really don’t know -- might have played along.
“I certainly hope that my star power can bump this hearing all the way up to C-SPAN One,” Colbert promised members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees, and Border Security, where he appeared as a witness on the issue of migrant farm work.
The subcommittee chairman invited the Comedy Central personality to testify at the hearing, which addressed the possibility of offering illegal immigrant farm workers a path to citizenship. Colbert’s “expertise” in the arena of immigration and farm labor stems from a July 2010 episode of his TV show “The Colbert Report,” during which he joined subcommittee chairwoman Rep. Zoe Lofgren to spend a day doing the work of an agriculture laborer.
Speaking in character as a bigoted and irate “free-market guy,” Colbert argued in his testimony that “we have to do something” about the plight of farm workers “because I am not going back out there.”
“At this point, I break into a sweat at the salad bar,” he said.
It's unclear upon how many members of the committee the joke was lost.
Rep. John Conyers, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, initially requested that Colbert leave the hearing room before his testimony, arguing that his presence had achieved its purpose by bringing attention to the hearing's subject matter. Lofgren interceded, saying that Colbert was in attendance at the subcommittee’s request, and Conyers relented.
Colbert did not stick to his (joke-free) prepared testimony, breaking from his planned dry statistics about American agriculture in favor of gags about entering his colonoscopy results into the Congressional Record.
If the committee’s intent was garnering publicity by inviting a late-night comic as its star witness, it worked. Lofgren commented at the outset of the hearing that she had not seen so many cameras in a hearing room since the impeachment.
Colbert did note the seriousness of the issue of immigration during the hearing's question-and-answer period, saying that he likes "talking about people who have no power."
"Migrant workers suffer. And have no rights," he said.
