4Chan launches ddos attack on mpaa. Members of the notorious 4chan image board have launched a coordinated a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack against mpaa.org, the website of the Motion Picture Association of America. The attack began at 9:00 PM EST and is still ongoing. It only took eight minutes for the MPAA website to go down.

You've really gotta be careful of those "Distrubed(sic) Denial-of-Service attacks". And I've never heard of /b/tards calling themselves "b*stards" either - methinks the jounalist is a little sloppy.

Man, I don't know about the practical effectiveness of this, but then again that can be said regarding any of anonymous' actions of the sort. DDOSing ThePirateBay is like a protest ring around a store, preventing anyone from getting in. DDOSing MPAA.org, on the other hand, is like burning down a highway advertisement. Yes there's a fire, but it really doesn't hit as hard.
Don't get me wrong, however. The MPAA is a blight. That and I don't know if I'd want to live in a world where channers actually had their shit together enough to do something Important on a regular basis.

If I were trying to do something like this, and if I was in a country where it was legal to do any of these tactics, and my enemy was genuinely evil, "I" would (in increasing order of nastiness)
i) launch attacks on their email servers: make it so they can't get through the shit in their inboxes
ii) craft-spam their business contacts continually (in their name) with plausible requests for time and resources. email, call, letter, phone.
iii) affect their insurability as a business: drive up costs
iv) frivolous lawsuits.
v) go for the major shareholders of the companies that support them. make it known that they are unethical, that you'll cause hell at their board meetings. hell, go for the share price on a single issue until the company drops supporting them. have popwerful people harrass CEOs and people of power in their supporting companies until they disown them publically.
vi) go for their bank accounts. get creative.
vii) harrass their workers, especially the ones up the food chain. they are paid well for "risk" and to "be responsible" - make them earn that money.
viii) find a congressman/judge/govt agency to bully them. turn the power of the state on them.
It's what they'd do to you. In fact they are doing this to you.

Meh, this probably does the MPAA more good than harm by making them look like the victim. If they really want to give the MPAA memer companies a black eye publicity-wise, they should put together a nice, coherent presentation explaining the monstrosity known as ACTA, the MPAA's support for ACTA, and list the member companies who make up the MPAA.
