If there's one thing I learned from reading British children's comics growing up, it's that a sizable portion of Britain believes that everyone in the US is from Texas.

Of course, a lot of the US believes everyone in the UK is from London, so I suppose it balances out.

I would create a map of the US as Hawaiians see it, but it comes down to any state touching the Pacific: West coast. Everything else: East Coast.

When I visited from Chicago, trying to explain where the midwest was always got summed up by them as "Oh, East Coast."

Frankly, these all are like a bad stand-up comic's routine. From the title, I expected it to be some sort of ironic look at stereotypes, but there's no irony as far as I can tell. It's good for a quick laugh, but they reinforce stereotypes; they don't seem to get beyond them. Am I missing someting?

Scotland = Incomprehensible Fun-Loving People Who Drink Scotch

Although everybody has a WTF moment when a preconceived stereotype is shattered, this one really takes the cake. When I lived in Scotland, I witnessed precious little Scotch being consumed. It was a special occasion drink.

Jack Daniels was far more popular in the course of everyday drinking.

And I do mean every day. The stereotype where the UK has a serious alcoholism problem is totally true. It didn't help that I became "legal" while I was living there.

Also, they watch more reality TV than we (US) do, and their print newspapers are pretty much all crap.

The Taiwan map is actually pretty funny, but it's all in Chinese. Here's a few:

USA = EVIL EMPIRE
Alaska = heaven
Canada = poor students who study overseas can only go here / the Rockies
Mexico = Criminals
South America = All kicking soccer balls around
Africa = Mom says that if I don't finish my dinner I'll be sent here
Europe = A place where one drinks afternoon tea all day and never has to work
China = Where black market goods and scam companies come from
Middle East = Desert and war
Japan = XXX videos are everywhere
Taiwan = STRONG Taiwan!
Malaysia (I think) = has lots of servants named Maria

And THIS is just ridiculous.

England = Hogwarts

Almost. An American party is a party where everybody is supposed to bring their own booze and, possibly, snacks. Usually the host provides them.

Paying for oneself (or just splitting the bill) at dates is pretty common though (or at least it was when I was dating)

I'd like to add that Europeans really have NO CLUE about the state borders of the US.

Speaking for myself, my mental image of the USA is something like this, from east to west:

New York & Washington. Great Lakes. Rednecks in Texas. A fence near Mexico. The Rocky Mountains. California. Hollywood. Golden Gate Bridge.

And .. that's about it, really.

One of the weirdest things I've ever seen was a German travel show featuring, of all places, South Dakota. As a vacation destination.

Having lived in Europe, I've noticed that a lot of Europeans forget how fucking large the US is and ask me things like, "Oh, you're from Vermont - that's on the east coast, you must be close to D.C.!" I explain that by "close" it's a 12 hour drive and people's eyes have bugged out of their heads.

Of course, Americans also have trouble with European geography, so that's pretty fair. My favorite moment of this - explaining to my dad where Portugal is on a map: "So, dad, you know the west coast of Spain?" "Yeah." "That's not the west coast of Spain.* That's Portugal."

*Except for that bit at the top that is, but that would have just confused him.

Regarding "Europe according to Britain": where do these prejudices come from? Oh, here's one source, the "Euroseptic" "blog" from the Daily Mail, written by some lady who according to Wikipedia loves Ayn Rand and wrote this about the Paralympics:

'It is time to suggest that these so-called Paralympics . . . are - well, one hesitates to say "grotesque". One will only say "perverse"…Surely physical competition is about finding the best - the fastest, strongest, highest, all that. It is not about finding someone who can wobble his way around a track in a wheelchair, or who can swim from one end of a pool to the other by Braille.

Here are some recent comments from her "blog", published by one of the largest newpapers in the UK:

I look forward to either a military coup (our soldiers not the EU Army) or the total destruction of the Conservative Party. (...)
