of course, that doesn't have the right coloring for an umbilical cord.

As long as we're talking about iDevices, why does the YouTube video work at the via link but not at the poster's first link when using this iPad? I know about Steve Jobs' jihad against Flash. I just don't understand what's different about the two pages.

when you go to youtube on an ipad it switches to html5, but I don't think the embedded films are caught up on that trick yet.

...Jebus that charger creeped me out. Are we sure it's not art?
Oh, it is art. Good to know my artdar still works.

That would make sense. Only in this case, it's the via link that's embedded and the first link that goes to a YouTube page.

This is totally going to haunt my nightmares.

Next up in Bizarre Pregnancy Dreams: It's not a baby! It's an 8lb iPhone!

Stem cell research? There's an app for that!

I never thought I'd be reading a sentence, "By the people that brought you the mechanical tumor." I also thought one metafilter post with tumors would be enough. This is my third if you count an askme question.

I have an iPhone, but I don't want one of these.

I've already pre-ordered six of these, which will be strategically placed when guests come over.

Thing looks like it's sucking the life energy out of that damned thing.

Man, who needs that much drama in their lives when their charging up their cellphone...

Eww to the max.

It didn't look like it was trying to drain the life energy out of the iPhone, it looked like it was trying to eat it!

As a practical matter, I don't want my charger to take up that much energy. I'm glad people can make things like the cord, but the idea of mass distribution of these things and the energy waste (never mind the grossness) bugs me a little.

That is not likely a very significant amount of energy. A CPU fan uses a couple of watts, so it seems reasonable to expect that this uses less than one watt. An air conditioner uses a couple thousand watts. So, leaving this thing on full time, 24/7 (and who would do that, given the noise it makes?) might use up as much energy as turning your air conditioner on for an extra 5 or 10 minutes a day (and I'm probably overestimating a fair bit). And that's to say nothing of car travel.

Oops, I did the math wrong, that should be 40 seconds, not 5 or 10 minutes!

I want one! It'll keep my kids away from my phone.

Xezlec, I understand the energy waste is minimal; I'm talking about the value judgement of spending energy resources on the art that is an ew-gross umbilical iPhone cord (particularly as added up over mass distribution). The fact that it's a small waste is why it bugs me a little, as opposed to big art projects I consider wasteful, which bother me much more.

(I expect a lot of mileage variance on the energy value of art. I just don't think much of this piece.)

There is nothing right or non-disgusting about that thing.

It is grosser than an actual umbilical cord - and I've been up close and personal with two of them in real life, and am currently growing a third, so I have some idea of how gross a functional umbilical cord can be. Which is no where near as gross as this.

That totally creeped me out.

Halloween theme, perhaps? Leave in the kitchen to scare people with? Would be more effective if only twitched once in a while instead of the constant spazzing.

The mechanical tumor is grosser.

I really want one of these, but my special lady friend took one look at it and felt physically ill.
