What You Missed This Morning, a photography competition at the blog Cycling Tips attracted some beautiful photos: Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4.

Worth mentioning is that I think the rules required that you use a camera phone. I wished I had a camera on my ride last Saturday, the autumn light (twilight though, not morning) was beautiful coming through the changing trees.

What I've missed, when I'm out riding, is my damn camera! There ought to be default prize just for remembering. Great post!

Bed? Check. Babe? Check. Bike? Check.
Okay, I think we're good.

Ah, thanks for mentioning the criteria that the photos be taken with camera phones - I was wondering why so many frikkin' pictures were plugging the Hipstamatic app. We get it already, faux-retro photos are fun.

Ahh, my bad. The rules indeed require that pictures are taken by phones only.

From the Rules section:

"Camera Phones only. Anyone can take a good photo with a DSLR, but it takes some real creativity to get a good shot with a camera phone."

What a joke. No wonder every shot is needlessly and bizarrely colored/vignetted. Sorry, don't mean to derail but that seems to be thought up by someone who does not understand how photography works.

That said, I love the idea and a lot of these shots are fun and the enthusiasm shows.

With a camera phone and faux film processing, composition becomes more important. You don't have the excess pixels to crop away, so what you shoot is what you get.

I enjoy playing around with my phone camera apps because often the accidents are so interesting. Sure, I could produce the same sort of effect with my real camera and some time with GIMP, but it would be limited by my intentions, and the accidents go outside of that range.

No way, it's a great rule. This way, the contest is actually fun, instead of inspiring lots of people to attempt to carry big, heavy, expensive, and delicate camera gear on their bikes, thus ruining lots of rides. It also increases the odds of the winning shot being genuine, not posed and taken with uber-expensive camera gear driven to the site.

Inspiration to pull the rusty chain off the bike and replace it. Check. Commitment to disassemble that clunky left shifter and repack it with grease. Check. Desire to get up at dawn and take stunningly beautiful photos. Check. Actual chance of getting my shit together to do that.. um.. yeah.. about that..

(These are great. Thanks!)

Beautiful.

I'm not a morning person, and I simply cannot enjoy morning rides, but it does look nice.

This post made me download Gorillacam, Picoli and Twitpict from the apps store. I was way past due for updating my iPhone's camera software (only Picoli cost anything).

Nice to see what can actually be done with my phone's camera!
