The Path:
Metafilter -> "On November 18, 2004, Haughey reopened signups"
November 18 -> "1940 – World War II: German leader Adolf Hitler and Italian Foreign Minister Galeazzo Ciano meet to discuss Benito Mussolini's disastrous invasion of Greece."
-> Adolf Hitler
I tried a couple. The connectors were all dates and years.
I wish it would let you specify both ends, e.g. how many connections from Obama to Aristotle? Hitler gets kind of boring (also creepy and evil). posted by John Cohen at 3:54 PM on October 8, 2010 [1 favorite]
I'm having a hard time finding anything bigger than a 2. C'mon, I tried beans, Montana, Kevin Bacon, The Beat Farmers, Metafilter.....is the whole world two degrees of Hitler? posted by marxchivist at 4:01 PM on October 8, 2010

I finding that many of the articles don't actually include those connecting dates. I wonder if that's an artifact from the data collection..I could understand 1 or 2 articles ("note: this is stale data and may no longer be accurate"), but a good handful of articles missing links to "April" or "December 1" starts to get suspicious. posted by niles at 4:16 PM on October 8, 2010

Good point -- I'm noticing that too. For instance:
OKCupid
May 28 [not in the OKCupid entry]
1889
Adolf Hitler
Freakonomics
April 19 [mentioned as a source date in Freakonomics entry, but no link to Wikipedia entry for April 19]

lady gaga > electropop > Adolf Hitler
WTF?
Electropop's early steps, and the Numan Futurist movement in particular, were strongly disparaged in the British music press of the late 1970s and early 1980s as the "Adolf Hitler Memorial Space Patrol" (Mick Farren). posted by John Cohen at 5:30 PM on October 8, 2010 [3 favorites]

Even if the date links make sense (and I couldn't find a connection between "January 30" and "earwax"), it sort of trivializes the connections (I know, that is the point). I'd like to see them cull the date and year pages from their index. posted by mr vino at 7:08 PM on October 8, 2010
