Ingenious design.

It's still a small metal pipe though. With a metal screen. High temps, harsh smoke, ugh. Can you even replace that screen?

Seems like it's designed for discreetness first. I suppose for some uses that is paramount (especially for Americans), but this strikes as something I'd get as a gift, use for a week, and then banish it to the Drawer-Of-Suboptimal-Smoking-Devices.

Ok, should have watched the review first. :)

Cleaning looks really easy. I am still concerned about the metal construction, though now I am not entirely clear on if the stem / mouth piece is metal or plastic... either way, not the greatest.

naju: the direct flame would be manageable, you can simply let go of the fuel button once the bowl is lit. Also, you can either pre-grind, or not grind at all. You really don't need to for a small pipe, in fact I find most smokeable matter will smoke better when you don't grind in a pipe like this.

I'm pretty sure that's the same Linda that used to post on thenjscene board—the DIY/punk/indie/whatever board for NJ at the time... it was originally called skanjska in the late 90's, heh—back in the day. If I recall, her username was iFuckLikeWhat. If that's her, people were real pieces of shit to her. A lot of people were shitty on that board in general, and the targets were usually young women. Sometimes the internet sucks.

It's weird recognizing someone you've never met. Hmm, now she reviews paraphernalia on YouTube. The commenters there can be even worse, but at least she's doing something constructive?

I was so ready to hit the 'buy' button but I seriously hesitated because of the idea that I was sure to lose it quickly (not that I ever space out where I put my gear after that fact....) anyway, it just looks too useful to pass up. Product suggestion for v2: tether hook.

I like the idea of the Wickie, but meh. It's metal and plastic. It has a screen. Ew.

I kind of want it just because it looks like it's from the damn future.

There is probably some way to twisting it so as to convert it into some kind energy weapon and another to turn it into a diagnostic device.

And between those three functions, you have nearly every situation covered.

We don't need your friend, because Linda's on the YouTube demonstrating how awesome the Magic Flight portable vapourizer is. In fact, Linda seems to be vouching for the quality of all of Wickie's products.

Say, you don't suppose Linda owns a piece of the company, by any chance?

Unless I'm seriously missing something, Wickie does not manufacture the Magic Flight, and is not affiliated with the folks who do. And Linda appears to be reviewing a wide array of smoking accessories, not just items from any one company.

No, you have to suck on it. That's how pipes work.

I'm told that after a couple of uses, you won't really mind the lack of vorbis support.

Be careful to make sure it's in "pipe-mode" though. I'd hate to think you plasma-ray-ed your brain because you didn't twist the stem just so.

I like smoking pot as much as the next guy, but I'm reminded of what Charles Barkley said when Randy Moss got caught with a joint in his car: "Every pothead knows you should finish smoking BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE."

This device is just another oh-so-clever way to get busted.

Also: if you MUST bake on-the-go, take a single joint with you, held in your hand, not stashed somewhere the K-9 unit will find in ten seconds. You can eat that before Officer Friendly can get to your window.

AAAARRRRG!

I have the Wickie Pipe that Laura is demonstrating to the left of my monitor...

It works very well. Particularly, if you want to take one ultra-stealth smoke in a club, it's aces. It's a little bigger and a little heavier than you'd think, and I wouldn't use it for non-stealth use because it doesn't flatter the taste of the, er, tobacco, but I'd still give it 4.5 out of 5.

I occasionally go to places where I know I'll get searched like Terminal Five (in New York). I've managed to sneak small pipes in every time somehow ;-) even though T5 e.g. has a pretty aggressive search (40 years of magic experience makes me invincible in that domain). But it'd be a little hard to sneak this guy in. I could do it... :-D

For all your stealth needs, contemplate this beauty - no direct experience myself but it sure looks good.

I agree with glass in principle but sometimes one needs to be on the go in a hostile environment. A metal pipe with a closable lid can be had for about $10, it's not much bigger than nail clippers, and you can take one hit through the hole and no one the wiser for it.

Classic story - I was in some club in NYC and a bozo took a hit from my proto pipe and then put it down on the table in front of us (and I didn't notice). The bouncer walked over and said, "What's that?" I took it and made it vanish, showed both hands empty, and said, "I'm very sorry, you won't have any trouble from us again," and he said, "What?" and I said, "It's my fault, I promise we'll be good from now on," and he said, "OK," and walked away. It was interesting watching him trying to figure out an appropriate response...

The flame passes over the tobacco - you draw it through the pipe with your breath. That part works very well and very intuitively - and, since I'm revealing my inner pot geek, the reservoir is very useful but the door comes off fairly easily (and back on too but...)

Let me try it with this new very fruity tobacco I have here.

Really not so bad. There's definitely a change to the taste but not entirely objectionable, characterful. I've cleaned it once so far, by putting salt and alcohol through it and then hot water to clean it out (trying not to get it in the lighter).

ARG! I seem to have managed to jam the lighter part. This is ridiculous... :-D New review... good design, lighter part jams easily!

For all you glass snobs (I kid) it looks like Wickie carries a pair of self-lighting glass pipes. They appears to use a removable glass stem in a metal housing. They're also available in a wide range of colors (avocado?). Forgive my ignorance (i've been retired for a long time), but what's the worst that can happen when you get caught with a joint in this day and age? I was under the assumption that pot smoking was widespread enough that the "paper bag" theory of public drinking also applied to weed. i.e. if you're making a good faith effort at being discreet, and not otherwise being an asshole...no harm, no foul.

Well there's actually plenty of that above. Anyhow, this is about a product it's about a technological advance!

So as good of a place to ask i think, I don't smoke, never have and don't really have any intention of starting, but recently some one tried to explain to me that the different methods (pipe, vaporizer, bong, joint) offer their own different experiences of the "high" which doesn't make sense to me. I figured since it's a chemical reaction with the THC it wouldn't be different based on these methods. I would think strand would make the difference more than the method of heating up the "tobacco". Am I wrong?

djduckie,

Different methods will favor non-destructive vaporization and absorption of different cannabinoids in different levels and at different rates. Pot contains a heterogeneous mixture of related compounds which will make you high in different ways.

Am I wrong?
A little on the wrong track. There are over 50 chemicals in cannabis which all contribute to the feelings it gives users. Pipes, bongs, and joints aren't radically different from each other, they all involve burning the cannabis. Bongs bubble the smoke through water which cools it and absorbs some water soluble components of the smoke. Also, most bongs give the user a visual stimulus of seeing the smoke and then sucking it up to clear the chamber. I think this contributes to the amount inhaled per hit vs. pipes or a joint where a person stops inhaling when they feel the hot smoke in their throat and lungs. Vaporizers heat cannabis up to a temperature where it vaporizes the oils and most of the psychoactive content without actually burning the plant matter. This results in fewer cannabinoids (the other major psychoactive component along with THC). Ingesting cannabis results in a very slow drawn out reaction as the chemicals are absorbed in the small intestine. Ingesting avoids the dangers of smoking, but it can be difficult to control dosage and effect. All of the above differences can and do affect the high people feel. This recent radio program covers a lot of this and the interviewee is quite knowledgeable. You're right about the strain being a major factor as well. Different strains can give radically different effects. Erowid - Cannabis has fairly good articles on these things, really more than you need to know.

I haven't smoked for years but its still a definite interest of mine.

I would like to put to rest the notion that this is advertising... I am in no way affilitated with the makers of the Wickie Pipe Lighter.

I only wished to share their cool idea.

I apologize to those who thought otherwise; this was a poor stab at a first post. I promise more valuable contributions in the future.

Dude, it's cool, it's cool. You'll get the hang of MeFi soon. Here, have a pull off of this... yeah, I just got a new pipe, isn't it cool? I saw it linked to on MeFi, and was glad someone finally invented this, as this same idea for a pipe has been stuck in my head for decades!

What, this IS the thread with the link? Wait... Whoah.
