Look people, the issue is not how you dress, it's putting anything else in front of being an American first. Because every REAL AMERICAN puts that first. Like the Mayor of Calgary. Clearly he puts being an American before being a Muslim.

I understand why they fired Williams. But it's a missed opportunity to force him to make a documentary series about his own remarks and have him talk to muslims, have him challenge his own assumptions, have him investigate what his own assumptions do to US muslims, etc.
A documentary like that could have done a lot to bring these kind of misunderstandings into the open en clear up the ignorance that a lot of other people have too.

Wanted to forward that picture to the blog, but I don't feel like signing up for Tumblr.
One of the disturbing things about looking for images of Muslims online is how many of them are violent. It's a sign of the zeitgeist.

Well, Abdullah sounded mighty sane, but he neglected to mention that every legislator and judge in his "constitutional" monarchy serves at his pleasure. It's an autocracy, plain and simple. He's a dictator, and hasn't been shy about wielding his power. I guess mentioning that would have been crazy, given the venue.

Can I just say that I miss the Imran Khan from that era? Sigh. Unfortunately, nowadays he has turned politician and runs a party that a) has a reputation for being squeaky clean in an exceedingly corrupt system and b) cozies up to exceedingly corrupt mullahs. sigh and double sigh.

TLiad: Imran Khan appears to have given up his interest in being the most eligible bachelor in Pakistan. :) Jinnah did indeed eat pork and drink alcohol, something which the mullahs have been all too eager to write out of Pakistani history books. Unfortunately, they have succeeded in their campaign.

Ellison is my representative. He's up for reelection in a week, but I have heard almost nothing about it. I don't know if there have been any teevee ads. I think it might be because the GOP decided to run Joel Demos, a Pentecostal minister who can't even get 2,000 followers on Facebook (by comparison, Eyedea, the Minnesota rapper who just died, has 22,000 fans, and Keith Ellison has over 6,000).
But, then, it might also be that Ellison is distracted by doing the actual work of being a Congressperson. He has authored legislation to give low income housing tax to formerly homeless youth, protect tenants from foreclosure, expand the omnibus bill to give a broader array of first responders benefits, expand school meals, and improve lead paint investigations.
Additionally, he has authored multiple bills designed to reform and regulate the financial industries.
Demos works at TCF bank and had a grandmother who was a mayor of Roseville.

Ellison is my representative as well. I sort assumed that his re-election was a given, so there wasn't much point to anything beyond some yard signs. I didn't even know who his opponent was, which is mildly embarrassing, but is probably indicative of how competitive the race is (or just that there are no Republicans in my area).

A.R. Rahman just performed at the RBC Center in Raleigh a few weeks back and apparently it's one of the greatest spectacles ever created. I'm bummed I missed it.

I like the idea of this site, though the implicit notion that it's ok to be afraid of people dressed in middle eastern clothes is a little discomfiting... But, baby steps, I guess.

FWIW, Syria-without-an-h is a single-party presidential republic, which is a bit different from Jordan's constitutional monarchy.

yep. twas my weird thursday brainchild. this might sound completely lame, but it's an absolute honor to have something i created be on the main page. i created this account in 2007, but first became a fan of metafilter around 2000 or 2001 - I believe I found it on Yahoo! yep. twas my weird thursday brainchild. this might sound completely lame, but it's an absolute honor to have something i created be on the main page. i created this account in 2007, but first became a fan of metafilter around 2000 or 2001 - I believe I found it on Yahoo! I like the idea of this site, though the implicit notion that it's ok to be afraid of people dressed in middle eastern clothes is a little discomfiting...
I really hope that this isn't the way the blog comes across. I'm trying (with the help of some awesome submissions) to try and include visuals of people dressed in a variety of ways, of lots of different backgrounds - so-called "traditional" and not, stereotypical and not, just to portray an honest spectrum. Then there's the zomgtheydressjustlikeusOHNOES part, which, unfortunately, is going to take a lot of continues effort to break down. Sadly some people will never get over their irrational fears of the boogeyman other, under this very broad label of people that identify themselves as "Muslim." But, like you said, baby steps...

Perhaps there needs to be a spin-off website of Christians, Jews, and other non-Muslims wearing what people (like Juan Williams) think is "muslim garb"? Maybe there could be a "spot the muslim" quiz even?
