So, in 3rd grade we had a hamster (Goldie) as a class pet. One day during class we heard a horrible scratching/squealing noise coming from her cage and we all ran over to check it out. This moron had crammed her mouth so full of corn kernels that she got herself stuck in the hamster tubing (at the connection, where it narrows a bit). It was only corn kernels, so since she could theoretically get herself easily unstuck just by spitting out a couple seeds, our teacher told us to go sit back down, that Goldie would be fine.
A half hour later she was still frantically trying to pull her head out, so we had to take the whole thing apart and jimmy her free. Rodents are dumb. posted by phunniemee at 10:05 AM on November 15, 2010 [1 favorite]
Cute critters are cute and all, but I'm getting tired of Buzzfeed (and all those little Tumblr blogs) just collecting other people's pictures and posting them without attribution or linkbacks. posted by Gator at 10:17 AM on November 15, 2010 [5 favorites]

Make that 48 chipmunks.
#6 is a prairie dog, and #12 an albino squirrel.
But love chipmunks filling them pouches. If you hand-feed them, they'll fill up, take off and empty them, and come back for more...until you get tired of industrious cuteness, or run out of nuts. posted by VicNebulous at 10:54 AM on November 15, 2010
I wonder if chipmunks (and other cheek-stuffing rodents) have a preference for which cheek they stuff food into first. Is there a such thing as a right-cheeked or left-cheeked chipmunk? posted by bettafish at 11:01 AM on November 15, 2010 [3 favorites]

Today when I was riding my bicycle home from school a squirrel almost darted in front of me. It changed its mind though, but the nuts that were in its mouth went flying out of its mouth as it changed direction. Cute. posted by thylacine at 11:29 AM on November 15, 2010

When younger, my Roborovski hamster had a distinct preference for stuffing her right cheek. She grew out of it, though, because she'd try to hop out of her food bowl, but would end up tipping over the side before she was ready because of the imbalance in her cheeks.
(They're really, really tiny. At adult weight, Hamthony Stark weighs about an ounce or so. When she was half-grown, a big peanut or a couple of in-their-shells sunflower seeds would do the trick.) posted by joyceanmachine at 1:42 PM on November 15, 2010 [2 favorites]

Speaking of cute rodents. So my wife has (had) three Robo hamsters. Come time to clean out the cage that last week, there is one quite satiated looking one, the back half of another, and a bunch of hair from the third.
Apparently this is not unknown (these had been living peacefully together for a year). Behind the cute is a vicious creature.

maxwelton, do you give them vitamin supplements? I had that problem with gerbils. Starting adding vitamins to their water, and they never did it again. posted by IAmBroom at 12:31 AM on November 16, 2010
The species of hamsters commonly kept as pets in the US are largely solitary creatures in their natural habitats. Wild Roborovski hamsters are slightly more social than Syrians or Campbell's/Russian in that they sometimes live in small family groups (as opposed to super-territorial and completely solitary Syrians). However, in captivity, Robo stress levels get ramped way up when they are kept in standard hamster enclosures. These little guys have evolved to run 4-5 miles every night while foraging for food; having to share one wheel in an enclosure rarely bigger than 1' x 2' leads to hamster madness. Compounding the problem, Robos are not good climbers and thus can't get much use out of space-extending tube systems which were designed for the needs of the two larger hamster species.
In captivity, Robos are generally able to tolerate a second Robo (preferably a littermate, preferably both females) but beyond that, mayhem and bloodshed will ensue as they mature. One year (1/3rd of their lifespan) is generally right about when they lose their hamster shit and snap. posted by jamaro at 2:30 AM on November 16, 2010 [1 favorite]
