Mark Madoff (1964-2010)

On Saturday -- the second anniversary of the Bernard Madoff's arrest -- his son Mark was found dead in an apparent suicide in his Manhattan apartment. Mark Madoff's father-in-law found him hanging from a ceiling pipe while his two-year-old son slept alone in another room, according to the NYPD. posted by Joe Beese (15 comments total)

This post was deleted for the following reason: This feels kind of out of the blue; I realize "gawk at awful person's son's death" isn't the intent but Mark hasn't exactly been on the radar and I'm not sure what a post about his suicide is supposed to be for. -- cortex

A friend of mine shoots for the WSJ and has a few photos of the body removal here and here.

WSJ: "Outside Madoff's Apartment, Intrigue"
Dozens of gawkers lifted their smart phones to photograph the moment, including two women who had stumbled upon the scene. The women talked between themselves, calling Mr. Madoff's apparent suicide a "selfish" act.

After his body was moved, the women quickly said, "Let's get lunch" and marched away.

I come now to Metafilter daily in much the same way I go to the obituary page in the New York Times, knowing always that at least one person of some stature or celebrity will have died and a post will be put up about that death. Thanks.

Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. [Exodus 34:7]

Wow, this was a strange one. While obviously suicide is hugely tragic, it makes me think that many of those who prospered financially off the bullshit of the last decade might not be able to enjoy their filthy lucre without a little bit of that old beating heart under the stairs.

so sad. am sorry, but this sounds like a "son paying for the sins of the father" situation. this is just sad.

Right. As if they care a whit about the lives destroyed or forever changed.

These bastards aren't like us.

I never thought I'd feel sorry for Bernie Madoff, but I do; this is terrible.

In principle, I'm not against Bernie Madoff suffering all the agonies of the protagonist of any given Greek tragedy, but this really brought tears to my eyes when I saw it earlier today.

It is tragic thinking about the immense pain that was present to cause such an act. May his children find peace.
