We really, really, really need to not use the word "rape" for consensual sex with a minor. I got so used to cases like this where it's actually quite clear no rape was committed that I defended Roman Polanski last time that case came around before finding out that no, he had actually raped that poor girl, and I felt sick for a week. I'm not necessarily saying that it shouldn't be a crime, but it shares so little of its characteristics with rape that it weakens it by association.

Is "child rape" really the best description of the crime that took place here? I'm not implying that there's something OK about a 49 year-old woman having sexual contact with a 14 year-old boy, but wouldn't that just be garden variety statutory rape? The "child rape" label seems sensationalistic and just plain inaccurate in this case.

Some of the 25 accused have names that relate to their transgressions: Peck. Tapp! Leathers!

That comment may have been rash because some people will insist that this topic must not be joked about. If you are on of those dour people, please substitute the above with: "This is a horrible practice!"

He was fourteen, no where near capable of meaningful consent, particularly with the wife of his principal. His actions after the assault only highlight the fact that he didn't understand the meaning of what happened to him.

As a former 14-year-old boy, I agree with you. As a parent, I don't necessarily. 14-year-olds vary very widely in their levels of development, and human law really isn't equipped to handle it. This is really one of those issues that gets everyone pissed off, and generally rightfully.

At the risk of derailing this, may I say that I particularly loathe the "sleeping with" euphemism in descriptions of situations where, so far as I can see, there was no "sleeping" going on.
