Server upgrade is complete, but there were certainly bumps along the way. If you spot any weirdness after the fact, drop it here.

Holy crap, the back tagging project (
recent update) is complete! 43,000 old posts have been keyworded by a team of hundreds of volunteers here. A huge thanks to all, I never thought we'd finish up all those old MeFi posts.

I see there are "
wind and solar powered" web hosts and I assume they just buy carbon and alternate energy credits because I doubt your site would stay up when it's dark and the wind isn't blowing. I saw Dreamhost described as a "
carbon-neutral company" the other day. If I wanted to offset the energy required to power the mefi servers, how would I go about doing that? Just calculate hours in a day multiplied by the watt rating on the power supplies (as a worst-case scenario), then just buy
alternate energy credits for that amount?
(asking here because it's mefi related)

It's a new version of the sites designed for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Try it out on the device, songs from MeFi Music even play in the device (works best on wifi of course). A short video if it in action is inside.

Jessica Hagy, author of
Indexed, the Venn Diagrams-on-cards blog, on how she went from unknown blog to bookdeal in just a few months: "
About a week after I posted the first batch last August, somebody linked the blog to Metafilter. Whoever you are, thank you! That's how my agent (it's still strange to me that I have an honest-to-god agent) found me, and from there, it just sort of took off." Crazy.

We've began updating the metafilter KML file again. If you're using Google Earth, point it at metafilter.com/metafilter.kml to get the latest data (it's about 3Mb so it'll take a while). It'll be automatically updated once a week from here on out.

New feature: RSS on all threads. If you're using IE7, Firefox, or Safari, open any thread on mefi, ask mefi, metatalk, music, or travel and you'll see a small RSS icon in your address bar. Click that, and you'll find a feed of the post and all comments. We'll soon add explicit links on the pages themselves, but for now the autodiscovery tag should work. Use this feature to track new comments on questions you've asked, threads you were interested in hearing followups, and any other thread you'd like to stay up to date on in your RSS reader.

Feature Idea: adding a PDF viewer? I recently installed a firefox plugin that redirects all PDFs to an inline viewer. For instance, check out
this post today and then look at
the PDF in docufarm. On windows, I hate waiting for Adobe's PDF plugin to load and on a mac I hate downloading and then opening in a viewer (and having to delete from my desktop later). This seems really simple and easy, and you can download anything you want to keep. Sometimes good posts hinge on a PDF, and this would make that easier to read online. Does it make sense to move PDF links over to docufarm?

An
amazing interview with
ColdChef about what life is like running a funeral home and what the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina taught him about MetaFilter. Also, a recap of the last two weeks, recorded on May 25, 2007. It runs long at 1 hour, 9 minutes total (about 35minutes with ColdChef, but totally worth it). [

There's a new user history interface, at http://www.metafilter.com/activity/(your user ID). It's linked on user pages now and provides a consistent view of your posts, comments, and things favorited by others (including a new most popular favorited list from your history). Three cheers for
pb for building it, it should be much easier to use and more consistent than the previous way we did things.
