Ask post: Should I help pay for the surgery that could save my best friend’s dog’s life?
You might also consider getting the vet's name and make arrangements with the vet to cover up to $3,000 and see if they'll keep their mouths shut about who paid for it. Depending on the size of the vet's practice this may be doable.

Ask post: How do you say "you shouldn't say that?"
I find that saying, "Wow, you're a dick" or "Wow, you're a bitch" - then laughing and walking off gets the point across.

Maybe he was checking to see if the last residents had actually moved away and wasn't so much scoping out the house or you.

Ask post: What prize should my friend keep his eye on?
Unless these girls have been incredibly sheltered for their entire lives - at the ages of 11 and 13 they *should* be able to see some of (if not all) the bullshit that is taking place around them. (I'm not saying that the adults in the situation will recognize this as either an idea or a possible fact.)

The father needs to be in contact with the girls, he needs to stand up for and fight for the girls - whether that means fighting for custody or just making sure the... [more]

MeFi post: Am I a boy or a girl?
Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 50%
Likelihood of you being MALE is 50%

I think that's actually a fair assessment considering I'm not a girly girl and tend towards being tom boyish. The results were better than I was expecting, anyhow.

Ask post: help teach an old bag some new tricks
I'm 35 and have recently taken up roller skating again (quad speed skates, not inline skates). I love it now almost as much as I loved it when I was ten and was shocked that it was pretty easy to get back into.

Ask post: Claws to teeth
He may have a cracked tooth, a tooth that's rotten, or on his way to a some kind of oral infection. If he hasn't been to the vet in the while it might be time to get him in for a dental cleaning/check-up.

Oral infections can be bad for a cat's health.

I would like to mention that cats don't show pain in the same way as humans. The cat acting different than normal was one of the reasons I suspect there might be some kind of mouth/tooth issue. (His age was another reason.)

You are not being unreasonable or unprofessional. I would have taken it a step further and told her to kiss my ass (this might be seen as both unreasonable and unprofessional in most circles but I work primarily for comedians. YMMV.)

Ask post: Another Stand-up Comedian Post...
Depending on John Bowman's mood at the time of the show you'll get either a more laid back guy or a more psychotic guy but there's always an edge of anxiety/high strungness present. A lot of the time when he goes out into the audience it's for conversation and hugs. You can download his album "In Stink" from itunes. (I particularly recommend the track titled, "Matt.")

John Bowman was also largely responsible for writing the Lewis Black segments that... [more]

Stephen Fry, all the way. Young American also nailed it by suggesting NEVER NOT FUNNY.

I've listened to the Stephen Fry podcasts over and over. It's not fall down funny but his off the cuff remarks are hilarious.

Ask post: DIY pedicure
The best thing you can do for your feet to avoid big nasty callouses in the first place is to buy shoes that actually fit.

Secondly, there's really no way to remove callouses without some pain. Start soaking your feet every night (warm/hot water + half a cup of epsom salt.) Either buy a foot bath with bubbling action OR use a large pan. This process won't be quick but you'll be able to see which bits of skin are ready to be scrubbed/rubbed/stoned off more easily. DO NOT... [more]

Ask post: Has anyone had success treating sleep apnea without a CPAP (or surgery)?
My dad has cpap and switching to the nose/mouth mask made all the difference to how he responded to the machine. He is also losing weight and they are adjusting his levels (ever so slightly) on the machine as he does so. To be fair, I don't think my dad will ever get off the machine because even when he was very fit - he was a chainsaw snorer.

I also personally know a girl who lost 50lbs and was able to go off the machine completely and she became sleep apnea free. It... [more]

Hugh Laurie on almost any talk show but particularly on The Late Late Show (Craig Ferguson) and Ellen.

Craig Ferguson has a habit of making people either really comfortable or entertainingly uncomfortable that I find appealing. He's particularly good with people that have their wits about them, though.

Bonnie Hunt is also usually good on Letterman or any other show (also used to be a go-to guest for Letterman.) If any of the old Tom Snyder late... [more]

posted to Ask Metafilter by fluffy battle kitten at 8:25 PM on May 15, 2008
It may be that the new dog (pictures of the chiweenie doggy, please) is still adjusting to his new place and getting secure in his surroundings. I have a chihuahua/pug mix that doesn't bark much or otherwise make noise UNLESS it's to alert me to someone on the street (when we're outside) OR if I've annoyed the crap out of her by playing with her too much (she will then crate herself.)

I think it would be helpful (and delightful) to make use of Acme products in this situation. I feel certain that you could repurpose nerf-like components for this. You should be able to get several good ideas from almost any Wile E Coyote/Road Runner cartoon. And the good thing about those is that it's usually going to have the build up to the big event in the cartoon for inspirational ideas.

Ask post: How do I style my hair like that of Dr. House?
It's possible with wavy hair. I have wavy hair. I'm a girl with a pixie cut. I have good luck alternating between Matrix Dirty Trix, Great Clips Design Taffy, and Detour Grid Lock. You will not need to use much product at all on short hair.

Print out a picture of Hugh Laurie and show it the person who cuts your hair. It's a basic guy's cut and they will know how to do it.

Ask post: 6 year old needs to have his tooth extracted. Any advice?
I had to have 9 baby teeth extracted before I got braces. It sucked. It's especially going to suck for the kid if this is a situation where they pack gauze in a hole for a week (so freaking gross).

I was 13 when this was happening so I was fully aware that it was likely going to suck. And it did - but it wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be.

One thing you might consider doing is calling a local school and find out if there are any kids in need of shoes, clothing, etc. There's usually a kid in need.
posted to Ask Metafilter by fluffy battle kitten at 9:10 PM on April 11, 2008
I do what I just suggested. I never meet these kids. The most information I get is sizes, if the child is a boy or girl and if I'm lucky a first name.

I should note that I am dealing with a community that I'm familiar with and I know people on staff at the school(s).

There are tons of houses in the Greenwood area for CHEAP right now...you'll have to go to older more east part of town (not Center Grove) but the Greenwood Community school system has really improved in the past few years. There is a large and growing Indian community in Greenwood (we desperately needed more diversity here and I happen to love this development.)

Binky loves broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. (Does not matter if it's raw or cooked.) He will separate the vegetables in order so that he can eat the carrots last. Binky is also a fan of green beans. (He does not care for lettuce or celery as much.) Binky's most favorite food is cheese, though. Ask post: Where can I find empty 2 liter bottles?
Are there public recycling bins? I mention this because where I live we have large public recycling bins where you can just drop off your glass and assorted plastic bottles. I always take my two liter bottles to one of those drop offs and there are always tons of bottles. (We have access to these bins at places like grocery store parking lots, some school lots, some parks, and other big box store locations.)

You might also try calling your local recycling plant.

Ask post: Casual flute self-study to Beatles and downtempo pop?
When I was in middle school and played the flute I absolutely HATED the boring crap we played during the first year. Somewhere I came across a book of Irish jigs. Those were just different enough (and fast enough) that I really enjoyed playing them. It was a beginner level book filled with simple Irish jig music - I have no idea what the book was actually titled.

However, I don't think it would be too hard to find a book of beginner Irish music.
