Ask post: Another Stand-up Comedian Post...
Depending on John Bowman's mood at the time of the show you'll get either a more laid back guy or a more psychotic guy but there's always an edge of anxiety/high strungness present. A lot of the time when he goes out into the audience it's for conversation and hugs. You can download his album "In Stink" from itunes. (I particularly recommend the track titled, "Matt.")

John Bowman was also largely responsible for writing the Lewis Black segments that... [more]

Stephen Fry, all the way. Young American also nailed it by suggesting NEVER NOT FUNNY.

I've listened to the Stephen Fry podcasts over and over. It's not fall down funny but his off the cuff remarks are hilarious.

Ask post: DIY pedicure
The best thing you can do for your feet to avoid big nasty callouses in the first place is to buy shoes that actually fit.

Secondly, there's really no way to remove callouses without some pain. Start soaking your feet every night (warm/hot water + half a cup of epsom salt.) Either buy a foot bath with bubbling action OR use a large pan. This process won't be quick but you'll be able to see which bits of skin are ready to be scrubbed/rubbed/stoned off more easily. DO NOT... [more]

Ask post: Has anyone had success treating sleep apnea without a CPAP (or surgery)?
My dad has cpap and switching to the nose/mouth mask made all the difference to how he responded to the machine. He is also losing weight and they are adjusting his levels (ever so slightly) on the machine as he does so. To be fair, I don't think my dad will ever get off the machine because even when he was very fit - he was a chainsaw snorer.

I also personally know a girl who lost 50lbs and was able to go off the machine completely and she became sleep apnea free. It... [more]

Hugh Laurie on almost any talk show but particularly on The Late Late Show (Craig Ferguson) and Ellen.

Craig Ferguson has a habit of making people either really comfortable or entertainingly uncomfortable that I find appealing. He's particularly good with people that have their wits about them, though.

Bonnie Hunt is also usually good on Letterman or any other show (also used to be a go-to guest for Letterman.) If any of the old Tom Snyder late... [more]

"Biological Recombinant Algorithmic Intelligence Nexus" - Brain (of Pinky and The Brain)

Snowball (this is another Pinky and the Brain reference - I just think it would be fun to have a black pug named Snowball.)

Ask post: Hush Puppy
What type of dog is this? Is it possibly a Basenji mix?
posted to Ask Metafilter by fluffy battle kitten at 8:25 PM on May 15, 2008
It may be that the new dog (pictures of the chiweenie doggy, please) is still adjusting to his new place and getting secure in his surroundings. I have a chihuahua/pug mix that doesn't bark much or otherwise make noise UNLESS it's to alert me to someone on the street (when we're outside) OR if I've annoyed the crap out of her by playing with her too much (she will then crate herself.)

It took this particular dog about six months before she understood that I was really... [more]

I think it would be helpful (and delightful) to make use of Acme products in this situation. I feel certain that you could repurpose nerf-like components for this. You should be able to get several good ideas from almost any Wile E Coyote/Road Runner cartoon. And the good thing about those is that it's usually going to have the build up to the big event in the cartoon for inspirational ideas.

Ask post: How do I style my hair like that of Dr. House?
It's possible with wavy hair. I have wavy hair. I'm a girl with a pixie cut. I have good luck alternating between Matrix Dirty Trix, Great Clips Design Taffy, and Detour Grid Lock. You will not need to use much product at all on short hair.

Print out a picture of Hugh Laurie and show it the person who cuts your hair. It's a basic guy's cut and they will know how to do it.

Ask post: 6 year old needs to have his tooth extracted. Any advice?
I had to have 9 baby teeth extracted before I got braces. It sucked. It's especially going to suck for the kid if this is a situation where they pack gauze in a hole for a week (so freaking gross).

I was 13 when this was happening so I was fully aware that it was likely going to suck. And it did - but it wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be.

Be honest with the kid but not brutally honest. It's not going to be pleasant but it's also not... [more]

One thing you might consider doing is calling a local school and find out if there are any kids in need of shoes, clothing, etc. There's usually a kid in need.
posted to Ask Metafilter by fluffy battle kitten at 9:10 PM on April 11, 2008
I do what I just suggested. I never meet these kids. The most information I get is sizes, if the child is a boy or girl and if I'm lucky a first name.

I should note that I am dealing with a community that I'm familiar with and I know people on staff at the school(s).

There are tons of houses in the Greenwood area for CHEAP right now...you'll have to go to older more east part of town (not Center Grove) but the Greenwood Community school system has really improved in the past few years. There is a large and growing Indian community in Greenwood (we desperately needed more diversity here and I happen to love this development.)

Binky loves broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. (Does not matter if it's raw or cooked.) He will separate the vegetables in order so that he can eat the carrots last. Binky is also a fan of green beans. (He does not care for lettuce or celery as much.) Binky's most favorite food is cheese, though. Sometimes I will mix a bit of chicken broth and pumpkin in with Binky's food and he thinks he is having a gourmet delight.

Lulu will eat damn near anything and is much harder to... [more]

Ask post: Where can I find empty 2 liter bottles?
Are there public recycling bins? I mention this because where I live we have large public recycling bins where you can just drop off your glass and assorted plastic bottles. I always take my two liter bottles to one of those drop offs and there are always tons of bottles. (We have access to these bins at places like grocery store parking lots, some school lots, some parks, and other big box store locations.)

You might also try calling your local recycling plant.

Ask post: I'm a sucker for a sucker! Here's my money!
My bank has the free lollipops AND dog biscuits (for dogs in the drive thru).

I just called my mom. She remembers getting suckers when she was little at the bank and the guy who owned the drugstore also gave them out apparently. My mom is 65 years old and grew up in a small rural town in Indiana.

You are most likely somehow hitting the soft reset doohickie or a combination of keys. Is there a key guard option?

I frequently dial out or hit the power button on my cell phone when I'm out with my dogs or doing some other activity where I've stowed the phone in a jacket pocket. I am pretty good about using the key guard but forget sometimes.

Does the kitty have a large scratching thing (post or box or whatever), a cat condo, or some fun cat toys?

Sounds like he's bored and/or lonely during the time you sleep. Make sure there are some fun noise making toys around. Little balls with bells in them (cats enjoy them but you *will not* enjoy them the first time your foot finds one in the dark), crinkly toys with catnip, little mouse shaped toys, etc. Start with the cheap alternatives first - go to your favorite... Ask post: Casual flute self-study to Beatles and downtempo pop?
When I was in middle school and played the flute I absolutely HATED the boring crap we played during the first year. Somewhere I came across a book of Irish jigs. Those were just different enough (and fast enough) that I really enjoyed playing them. It was a beginner level book filled with simple Irish jig music - I have no idea what the book was actually titled.

However, I don't think it would be too hard to find a book of beginner Irish music.

Ask post: Hold the prayer and pass the potatoes
Just bow your head and think dirty thoughts while they're praying.

Seriously. It's CHRISTMAS...let them pray. Them praying before the meal isn't a big deal unless you make it a big deal. They aren't enforcing you to believe what they believe by saying those words. There's really no reason to pee on their belief system on what is a huge day in their worldview. In fact, if you let them pray - they'll probably think it's one of the best gifts you could give them on this... [more]

Getting properly medicated has helped me in being far more productive than I ever was before.

If he was taken away from his mother too early he wouldn't know how to groom himself. Since he's always been that way I'd assume that's the issue.

Some cats never get the hang of grooming. It might help him if the clean kitty starts bathing him but if that's not already happening I wouldn't hold your breath that it will occur.
