7 minutes in heaven?
Um...I know this is minor, but did anyone else think Martin looked odd? I don't think he was framed properly -- there wasn't enough space around him in the shot, as though the person filming him didn't quite know what they were doing.
Or is there some reason for framing him like that?
I found it distracting, and I can't imagine it helped him.

that cab is two storeys in the air! And those payloads are in standard tons (ST) and metric tonnes (MT)-- meaning you could carry 10 CXTs and still have room for enough dirt to landscape your neighbourhood.

BTW: the movie is entertaining and enlightening, I recommend it to everyone.
Yes, it does seem biased "against" the corporation, but that bias is obvious, and easily countered by reflection (unlike most media biases).
[anyone know if the soundtrack is going to be available?]

Jonmc,
I’d like to clean the slate. On reflection, I, too went too far: Using the “f-word” was un-called-for. I apologize for that.
I’d like to try to unravel what lead me to that outburst, though, if I may:

That's a brilliant idea!
An alternative to the present system, that doesn't simply "extinct" the corporation, as others were worried about.

That condition is also called "congenital analgesia." I remember that one of my professors -- Ron Melzack, who specializes in studying pain -- has done some research on it. People who have it generally die fairly young. There is some information on it in this article, if you're interested (the info about congenital analgesia starts on the bottom of the second column).

My father used to scuba dive for the City of Niagara Falls Fire Department, and for the Maid of the Mist tour boats that cruise the river below The Falls. He's seen more than his share of body parts in those waters, and in the whirlpool north of there. [I think with DNA testing that is now available, possibly hundreds of "missing" people from all over N.America could have been identified by their (few, scattered) remains below The Falls...]

I read Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States, 1492-Present" just before the outbreak of Gulf War II, and was instantly and strongly impressed by how closely the Spanish-American War resembled what was about to unfold in the Gulf Region. Most compelling was the fact that the USA decided against supporting the existing Cuban rebels because Big Business didn't feel that they could be sure that if the rebels were successful in seceding from Spanish dominion they would... generally, I'm the kind of person who will intentionally mis-use a word or phrase for effect, counting on my audience (of one or many) to know that I'm using a special effect, and to think of it in that sense. and i can imagine that it would drive the language police mad, if they don't "'get" what i'm doing: so be it.

I was betting too conservatively right off the bat, fearing that this was actually going to be hard or something...the only one I got wrong had to do with the lead singer of Travis' haircut's name. I mean, really, this is rock trivia? But by that point I was betting the full 50%, and lost a lot of ground to a friggin' hairdo! Blatt.

Substrate: I remember the Icon computers pretty well. Our high school in Niagara Falls, ON had an Icon lab with about 12 computers and a server.
They were UNIX-based, built by Burroughs, and had many pretty advanced features for the mid-80s: colour screens were available with, I think, 16 colours.
They had massive keyboards with dedicated keys for many, many tasks. They also had a built-in trackball... [more]

I've heard of it before now. There was a television show about it a few years ago. Alas, I cannot remember the name of the show--all I remember is it profiled several people who had hydrocephalous and very small brains, but were all of average or above average intelligence. I wish I remembered more about it.

I was an extra twice last year, and still have nightmares about it.
We were supposed to be recreating a midway, and I spent about an hour on a ferris wheel in the hot sun. At least I did better than the extras who foolishly volunteered to ride the tilt-a-whirl ('tho the director was nice, and stopped the ride whenever anyone actually threw up).

It was a little like a trade show. There were booths you could walk by, where social workers had posted descriptions of the children. The descriptions were very much like those on the site. There were also videos of children shown. It was a strange experience, but... [more]

Boswell...not sure what you mean to imply by putting "noted" in quotation marks. Rohinton Mistry is a distinguished, popular and award-winning author. And staying home and writing is only part of the job. Going on book tours to promote your work is an important part of the job of any published author (according to the publishing companies that is).

A friend of mine sent out "birth" announcements when her baby was stillborn last year. The announcements had a picture of the baby, the date she was born and died (same day). It was a disturbing item to receive in the mail, but I understand my friend's motivation -- she wanted to mark the existence of her baby.
These pictures might be gruesome to us, but I can completely understand how they would be valued by the parents.
