Ask post: I Wish To Squish
I'm guessing it would actually take a lot to derail a train else we would see DHS inspections to even look at tracks. I was pretty old (luckily) before I realized the possibilities of train squishing.

Flying shrapnel would likely be the most dangerous part. A VERY dangerous part.

Ask post: Scream Therapy?
Men can scream just fine, although at a lower tone. You usually will only see this when a man is startled. Mostly this higher threshold is due to social conditioning. Screaming, crying behaviors are frowned upon. I imagine you'll see a lot more gay men scream where being effeminate is considered more normal within that social group.

Ask post: Where should I shop?
Unless you want to turn your vacation into a shopping trip, I'd do the shopping up there.
That way you not worrying about buyinga whole wardrobe in Austin. And yes although it's hovering in the 70s this week, It could easily be 40-50 in March.

If you only need clothes for your trip[...] keep the tags/receipts so you can return them later

Sounds dishonest.

Didn't mean it that way.

Sorry misread it. Is Retail Renting Ethical?

There are definitely some newer clubs like Pangea that people tend to dress up a little more for, but they won't be part of SXSW. If you want to blend in, I'd suggest not walking around wearing your SXSW tag. (except while getting in to a venue).

Ask post: Weight loss strategies
Go buy some books first. A $10 book can save you a lot of time and wasted effort and discouragement.

I'm closing in on the goal after getting about 30lbs over my ideal weight. What helped me was another AskMefi answer that suggested I take a look at "The Abs Diet." It's not really a diet per se, but rather some lifestyle changes that can help you. You can also find similar advice elsewhere. Basically you need to find ways to boost you metabolic rate.... [more]

Ask post: Wash my car for free?
A normal universal IR remote would not have the proper code sequences programmed in. Your typical $20 universal remote has a few hundred brands of TVs etc pre-programmed in. That short 4 number code only access a set of IR codes stored in the ROM of the device.

Any programmable one would be capable of being programmed to produce the correct codes. A learning remote probably would be able to learn the commands if you had the original remote. But then using one would be stealing...

Ask post: Smoking vs OCD
Hmm sounds like he's convinced himself that smoking is helping his other afflictions. While his other afflictions may increase while he is quitting (or at least become more apparent) I suspect that it will only be temporary. The mind of an addict is a funny thing; it tends to find any little excuse to keep on doing a drug.

Ask post: What can I do with my extra computer?
I use mine as a file server and connect to it with remote desktop from my laptop for all my large file/porn needs. I use SyncBack (free version) to do nightly backups from the laptop.

Ask post: Where's my parade?
Sounds like you are (mostly) gay. The telling aspect here is that you say you get off sexually to women. The confusion for you is that you've never had sex with a female that you're in love (or lust) with. I've had plenty of sex with women that I liked, but I was not sexually attracted to. Eh... not so fulfilling.

Emotionally it seems you have feelings for men and women. That's fine, but I think you need a combination of sexual attraction and emotional attachment to be happy.

Ask post: Need help with 30" Cinema Display
What you might try and do is see if there is a setting on the monitor to display the 1280x800 resolution at a 1 to 1 pixel resolution. You won't be using the whole screen, but LCDs always look best when pixels are mapped 1-1. Everything should look normal size until you get a new video card.

Ask post: Can glossy inkjet paper be recycled?
Recycling paper may harm the environment more than it helps.
While it save trees (a renewable resource, a crop), it introduces chemicals for bleaching, breaking it down, transportation, etc. Also the dyes, chemicals in the paper might be better off left locked within the paper.

I'm not sure how you make a realistic comparison of which is the lesser of two evils, since a lot of the information out there is presented by groups with ulterior motives (trade... [more]

Ask post: Ants plus cat equals creepy, crawly danger
I used the Combat slow kill ant cups. It takes about a week to kill the nest. Apparently it the same stuff used in the Cat/Dog flea treatments. You can't spray regular poison, since you want the ants to carry the poison back to the nest/queen.

Also since it's contained in the ant cup it should be safe for cats/dogs.

Find something that is going to conflict between the wedding and the reception. Say you can't do it because you'll be a little late. Business meeting, family commitment, etc.

Beers of the World outside Rochester, NY

I used to love that place. Beers of the World, not Rochester, NY. Whole Foods has an OK selection.

Maybe to him they are everything. Who are you to make this judgement? While his attitudes may change as he gets older, it's up to him to make those value judgements.

Ask post: what's the music video with the girl holding a heart?
I meet chicks on dark streets all the time too!

I liked it, seemed more like a little independent film than a video (song was ok). I can definitely see the guy's perspective. Too anxious is scary.

Ask post: It crawled out of where now?
Doubtful that you'd get a worms that quick, but one quick test is to expose them to light. They are nocturnal. The treatment for worms is usually 1 pill and works quickly.

I let you figure out how to do that.
Ring worm/yeast infection, hemorrhoids. I'd check out one of the online medical sites and try one of their diagnostic sections.

Ask post: Teach my boy cunnilingus!
Dump the mother... just kidding.

It seems that you two have to work on communicating about sexual desires and needs. (Maybe needs in other areas as well). For you to start a conversation about this I suggest you start by talking about something you already do and maybe get him to try some more adventurous positions. Slowly introduce new ideas.

Good luck.

Ask post: Customs and laptops
Searching for (bomb manual, kiddie pr0n, pdfs of the constitution, etc) is done much like a virus scan. Files are searched for known signatures of verified offending pictures/movies. It won't matter what name you change it to, where you put it, or whether it's deleted or not.

So you'd need to encrypt the data (truecrypt) and wipe the files using a file wiper (many also wipe free space and cluster tips). Wipe your browsing history. Even then the swap file can be... [more]

Ask post: What is the Dell equivalent of a Thinkpad T-Series?
I've got two 14.1" T42p laptops. I'll definitely be getting another Thinkpad. After seeing the D610/D620 in person I'd never buy one. The build quality is very poor on these.

I do recommend the 14.1 over the 15" Thinkpad as it's more compact.

Ask post: Losing faith
I'd say around 7. I was pretty gradual as I was taught there was a god, but every thing seemed pretty silly. As I learned more and more about science and critical thought, my beliefs became clear. I wonder why people think faith is a virtue, after all it's just willful ignorance.
