MeFi post: Bansky Vs Paris Hilton
Thank goodness for allofmp3 for allowing me the opportunity to preview her 'songs'. The processing of her 'vocals' is not only obvious but in many places fails to mask her shortcomings as a singer.

Paris may hang out in Pure like it's her throne room, but Celine Dion has nothing to worry about.

"if you are looking for people to ask why they support the US Government..."

Just stay right here on MeFi and state that this situation is the nature of bureaucratic bumbling, regardless of who control the executive and legislative branches.

The faith around here in a government that could actually work is as misguided as a christian's faith in god.

"Is the city government seizing the land as well..."

I cannot find a single reputable news source that supports the FPP's links or gives any details about this city ordinance, not even the New Orleans Times-Picayune. For all we know, this whole story is a hoax.

However, I would not at all be surprised that Nagin finally figured out that the priority in rebuilding New Orleans means appeasing first those who pay the... [more]

More appropriate to the question at hand:

"The city attorney and several council members also said then that homes will not be taken away if not gutted and boarded up by the deadline."
posted to MetaFilter by mischief at 7:59 AM on August 24, 2006
First, you all complain that government entities are not moving fast enough. Now, Nagin and the city council have made proactive decisions and you all complain that government entities are moving too fast.

You can't have it both ways, people.
posted to MetaFilter by mischief at 8:07 AM on August 24, 2006
Yes, you want it both ways. Nagin is taking the very liberal step of promoting the good of all at the expense of a few. Nagin is taking the expense of gutting these houses onto the city; I haven't read anything about him sending the homeowners bills.

New Orleans has two choices, a slow meandering rebuild that pleases everybody, or a fast rebuild that will inevitably step on some toes.

For a bit more expanded answer (on the federal level anyway):

A) FEMA is not big enough to handle a situation like Katrina. True, FEMA responded marginally to past hurricanes, but none of those were of Katrina's scale. FEMA has neither the manpower nor the skillsets needed to rebuild a city. If the american public wants a federal government with that much power, the Constitution would have to be scrapped and a completely new system of governing would need creating.... [more]

Flood insurance is not the only concern:

The Louisiana Department of Insurance recently granted Farm Bureau a special emergency status that allowed it to drop wind and hail coverage on 7,500 existing customers.

State Farm has not dropped coverage but is not writing new policies.

Allstate, following Farm Bureau, is trying to drop its wind and hail coverage on its 30,000 customers in 18 parishes and has threatened to leave... [more]

MeFi post: Federal Appeals Court: Driving With Money is a Crime.
Although the linked article and the FPP have excised rather important evidence to make a rather biased point, a reading of the actual decision leads me to believe that the decision is more a case of "kicking it upstairs".

Note that Gonzalez did not claim that any of the money was his, nor that he was on trial for any crime.

posted to MetaFilter by mischief at 11:35 PM on August 20, 2006
Gomez, Morgan and Gonzalez are claimants. Also, habeas corpus does not apply here, because no one was charged with a crime; it's a civil matter.

I agree, though, this law sucks. Hopefully this will be the case that nullifies it.

People or businesses with poor credit can still buy a cashiers check.

I doubt these guys would have had this problem if they had just identified the guy who was selling the truck. That's a MAJOR hole in their story.
posted to MetaFilter by mischief at 12:45 AM on August 21, 2006
Why would that happen, Blazecock? Buying a cashiers check for that amount is already a reportable transaction.
posted to MetaFilter by mischief at 1:05 AM on August 21, 2006
As I said, this law sucks.

Regardless, flying across the country and then driving back with that kind of money is stupid, especially if their business was legitimate. It doesn't take a law degree nor even a high school diploma to know that local police and the feds are going to cast a suspicious eye at $125K wrapped in tin foil.

People doing stupid shit = the government doing stupid shit.

CAFRA has, for all intents and purposes, corrected this unfair advantage and now imposes upon the government the burden of proving, by a preponderance of evidence, that the property should be forfeited. Congressman Hyde and other members of Congress were actually pushing for a much more stringent burden of proof, that is, by "clear and convincing evidence", however, this effort fell victim to compromise.Prior to the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act of 2000 (introduced by Henry Hyde (R)...
