What Terry Pratchett book should I read first?
Read Guards! Guards! for the introduction to all the Watch books and characters and a pretty good intro to Ankh-Morpork too. Read Reaper Man for a love story with the Discworld Death in it, and it's a pretty good intro to the Death character too. Read Wyrd Sisters for the witches.
From Guards read Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo,... [more]

If it is swollen nasal tissue, increasing the amount of salt you use might help. I often use up to double the amount indicated for isotonic solutions. A hypertonic solution can help draw moisture out of the mucous membrane and shouldn't sting. Maybe try going to half again the salt first, see if that makes a difference.

Fixing FF3
Well, that definitely works for me. It's a Flash thingy. Are you running NoScript or anything that would be blocking Flash completely?

I'd try turning Adblock off and checking that site again, but unless your filter list is blocking all .swf, it's probably not the problem. I run Adblock and the site linked above came through fine. Still, it's worth a shot.

You could swap in the userchrome-example.css file to see if that takes care of things. It should be in the same directory as your userchrome.

Better router / access point
What generation of the 54G are you using? I've successfully used 2 of the WRT54GL ('L' is Linux, and that model is essentially the same as the first few generations of the 54G) in an office environment combined with Tomato 3rd-party firmware to support 20 people on wireless. PPPoE and QOS are supported on that combo.

Just a thought - do you run Bittorrent a lot? If so, your problem is probably the 5-day timeout on connections that is default on the 54G, filling up your routing table. Most 3rd party firmwares allow you to adjust the active or established connections time-out period. I use 14400 seconds. Linksys uses 432,000.

The user manual for the PCX2200 says that the USB and Ethernet interfaces can be used simultaneously. I doubt you could replace the cable modem without having to get your provider to allow the new one to be used, but you never know.

This seems like it would do the job of sharing your internet connection as well. I doubt you'll find a wireless option that is USB powered, though. That's just too much draw for a USB port.

What is this plane?
Size is a bit tricky, but non-FAA says to me maybe a prototype, or even something like a powered paraglider. In the US there's almost no regulation and no license for PPGs.

college crisis: playing PC games on a mac at college...
Current-generation Macbook Pros always test up there speedwise with the Windows laptops in Boot Camp, except for very fast and specialized laptops that cost the moon. I use Parallels with a Boot Camp install, it's nice to be able to get into Windows without rebooting if needed. I think that gaming on a Mac laptop with a dedicated video card - so the Pro, not the standard Macbook - would be as good as a regular laptop.

All I want is a sub-$200 bed that isn't ugly.
The problem with that bed (for you) is that it is made to NOT be used with a box spring; i.e., the side of the bed are too short and the mattress will move side-to-side. Otherwise, you probably could get away without the slats, but I don't think that a mattress-box spring combo would be very good on that frame.

No Renters Insurance for Internet pros?
Frankly, it sounds like they're giving you excuses now. Won't insure you because you work with the Internet? What the hell?
We had renter's insurance through Scottish & York, who knew that I worked at home as an internet professional, and the only caveat was that regular renter's insurance would only cover up to $5000 dollars worth of computers. Anything over and I would have had to get business insurance. Is that the problem?

It is possible, but probably not a new one. Look for a used model, though. My fiancee got a Nikon D50 practically new because the owner wanted to go to the D80 right away. She has example photography on her Flickr photostream.

We're lazy, I admit it.
We had a portable, and it was fine. We would have gone built-in, but we didn't have the space. We just rolled it to a corner when it wasn't in use.
But don't bother buying Kenmore or Maytag. Seriously, look at Danby. You'll get a stainless-steel tub for about half the price you'd pay for either of the two big brands, and it's a fact that Danby makes the actual dishwasher for at least one of them anyway. We got a 5-year in-home warranty with ours, manufacturer standard.

Why does my 12" Powerbook overheat so much?
I doubt it's the RAM door messing things up - airflow, even in laptops, isn't delicate or tuned enough for that to make a difference. If I had to guess, I'd say that the new drive is the culprit. You may not be seeing anything over the upper temperature limit on the drive because it's shedding heat onto the processor - so the processor gets overheated because the drive cooling is doing what it's supposed to.
I'd guess that the original drive was a 4200 RPM unit, which... [more]

I just ran a test on a 12" PB that I have here (1.5 GHz, 768 MB RAM, original 60 G drive). I loaded up two windows showing Youtube to peg the processor at 100% and also started a Disk Utility process to create a new disk image out of the Applications folder, to get the disk rocking at the same time. The temp at the bottom of the CPU is holding at 57 Celsius and the fan is running at around 4500 RPM.
Surprisingly (to me, anyway) the drive is a 5400 RPM unit, but... [more]

iFixit.com shows only one fan on the 12" machine, on the CPU itself. There's always the possibility that the intake and/or vent for the fan are blocked up, which would explain why the fan doesn't seem to be having much effect.
You could try blowing some canned air into the intake (around the back, under the screen hinge) or the vent, on the left hand side at the front. If you do that, be VERY careful not to just blast air in there at full speed - you'd run the risk... [more]

Son of Airplane on a Conveyor Belt
Friction in bearing assemblies increases roughly linearly with angular velocity, at least at sane velocities, but I don't know how you would determine the bearing torque in the first place. It'll be dependant on factors such as the size of the bearings, the load and the angle that the load is pitched at, heat dissipation mechanisms for when that comes into play, any sideways forces on the wheels, and the speed of the conveyor.

Why can't Godfrey work the trackpad?
Try dragging something larger than the tip of your finger across the trackpad. When I do that to my MBP, it doesn't respond. The pad depends on a small locus of input.

In the interests of Science, I grabbed one of our cats and tried it on the MBP. Her paw doesn't move the cursor but she can scroll pages with it, likely because multi-touch can register larger/multiple inputs.
Then she ran away. Damn Luddite.
