What's the best way to back up a Debian Linux install? I have a virtual hosted Debian instance I use as a personal server, but right now I'm not doing anything to back it up. So what's the best way to do that? One thing I'd like to be able to do is take a snapshot of the entire installation, so that I could restore the entire system on another machine (or virtual machine) so that any software I'd installed would work and stay configured.

Every day tens of millions of "captchas" are solved by humans, using undreds of thousands of man-hours of work. But what if those person hours could be used for something beneficial?
They can be.
(you may have noticed recaptcha being used on some notable sites)

Open Social API, coming soon
(according to techcrunch) Google will be launching it's Open Social API, designed to allow inter operation between social networks. Social networks like orkut, linkedin, friendster, sixapart (livejournal and vox)
and myspace will likely be using the technology. It's supposed to be announced today (at
this URL, no less)

Are there any web sites where you can enter a search term, and get an RSS feed of new results, like Google news alerts but over RSS rather then email? Are there any other interesting tools out for searching the blog sphere (besides technorati)

The Shanhai Cooperative Organization.
[wiki] When Moscow and Beijing engineered the creation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) six years ago, I am not sure if they foresaw its emergence as an important actor in the international order. Iran, India, Pakistan and Mongolia, currently observers, are lobbying hard to get accepted into this club. The US request for membership was rejected two years ago.

The Green Leap Forward
"Environmentalism is China’s fastest-growing citizen movement. Beijing isn’t cracking down on these new activists—it’s empowering them."

My sister just graduated from Parsons with a BFA in Fashion Design. I said I would help her with a website, which would basically be an art/photo gallery with a few different sections. Are there any content management systems that would work well for this type of application? Free is good, but I wouldn't mind spending a little money for something really good. She sent a couple links to designers' homepages that she liked [
1 2 3 4 5].
Whatever it is will need to be PHP/MySQL (or flash) based.

This is the source of the "Dramatic Chipmunk" clip that everyone loves so much. It's actually a prairie dog.

Are there any cellphone MP3 players that let you set an mp3 as a ringtone? I'm thinking of replacing my cellphone and mp3 player, but I refuse to buy a combo device that won't let me set an mp3 as a ringtone, because that's insane. I also want to be able to buy an unlocked handset and use it with whatever provider I want, rather then being a slave. (Can you tell I really don't like the cellphone industry?)

Lawrence Lessig moves on
Lessig has spent the last 10 years fighting for IP reform and open culture, He's decided to focus on fighting what he calls "corruption" (with quotes)... the pernicious effect that moneyed interests have in crafting and controlling public policy.
Finally, I am not (as one friend wrote) "leaving the movement." "The movement" has my loyalty as much today as ever. But I have come to believe that until a more fundamental problem is fixed, "the movement" can't succeed either. Compare: Imagine someone devoted to free culture coming to believe that until free software supports free culture, free culture can't succeed. So he devotes himself to building software. I am someone who believes that a free society -- free of the "corruption" that defines our current society -- is necessary for free culture, and much more. For that reason, I turn my energy elsewhere for now.

Sub $1000 UAV.
Wired editor, author and blogger Chris Anderson
[wiki] built a sub $1000 UAV from a model airplane and a Lego mindstorms robotics kit. The drone
flies itself, all you do is punch in a direction (and eventually, GPS coordinates). I don't know if it's technically Open Source, but you can definitely
download instructions and code.

Meet 郑筱萸 (Zhèng Xiăoyú)
[WIKI]
Former head of the State Food and Drug Administration of China. Recently the quality of Chinese food and drugs has come under fire. You may have
heard of
tainted pet food from china killing cats and dogs. You might also have
read about antifreeze in cough syrup made with impure Chinese glycerin killing people in other countries. Apparently someone in China cares about government accountability, because on May 29th
Zheng Xiaoyu sentenced to death.

I don't think
this takedown was appropriate. Just because the story was "resolved" with flickr doesn't mean that there's nothing to talk about, or that it isn't interesting.

The end of one-click patents?
The Supreme court recently handed down a decision in the case of
KSR v. Teleflex requiring courts to
use "common sense" in determining what is an is not "Obvious" and therefore not patentable. According to SCOTUSblog, this will greatly affect "combination" patents that involve combining two already existing ideas in a new way.

Let's say you want to build an extremely tall really tall building with giant metal rods supporting it. Would it be feasible to "forge" the rods in place with some sort of self-raising crane/steel mill?

Carol Lam
was the first one to receive much publicity. A federal prosecutor fired for not making guns and drugs a top priority. She was also Duke Cunningham's prosecutor. No big deal, she just hadn't prosecuted many cases during her tenure. Except that Lawyers called the firing "
virtually unprecedented And FBI people claimed the firing would jeopardize cases. Then there was
Daniel Bogden, a federal prosecutor in Nevada was also canned for "fostering low morale". And actually it turns out that as many as
many as eight federal prosecutors have been fired in the past two months.

Getting rich by getting it wrong
How the elite pundits who pushed the war profited in money and prominence, despite being completely wrong. Mean while many pundits who opposed the war from the start were
sidelined.

There's a new version of
line rider, a game where a little guy on a sled rides down lines. This new version features a 'flag' button that lets you save the speed and position and edit from there, allowing you to create
great epic paths incrementally through trial and error.
