self/commercial link? This link seems really suspicious to me. It could be an attempt to boost the page rank of that legal marketing page, or something. Posters in the thread seem pretty skeptical of the claims, and it just seems sketchy to me.

55335 on the blue is a self-link (I'm deliberately not linking to it), anyone know how to contact a mod? Are they asleep? It's especially irritating because it's a self-link to a crap site about "marketing and making money on the web". Also, how about a feature that allows a user to self-revoke posts for a certain amount of time (like 10 minutes) if they realize or learn it was a bad idea.

Was there a torrent site link deleted from
this thread? It seems kind of inconsistent to link to a streaming site but not a torrent site, both are just as infringing. Also, do we still need the warning about Israel/Lebanon on the posting page? The war has been over for a while.

ZOMG Horrible chatfilter. I really like this thread, but it epitomizes everything that is considered 'chatfilter'. No problem to solve, clearly 'a survey'. The poster only asked it because he wants to hear other people's experiences.
I would hate to see it deleted, but I'm pointing it out because I think the chat filter policy sucks.

Chatfilter? There's no "problem to be solved" and "each answer is equally valid". Which from what I understand is the normative definition of chat filter. I don't have a problem with chatfilter, but perhaps we could get some clarification, or fixing of the rules.

meta-ask: Are there any scientific studies suggesting the need for addicted people to "hit rock bottom" before getting better?
I've noticed in a lot of AskMe threads dealing with addiction in a loved-one that people say that the addicted person needs to hit "rock bottom" before they can start to get better. Now obviously in retrospect every former addict will have some low point that they can look back on as their lowest, but often the advice given also states that people should avoid helping their loved-one, in a sort of effort to accelerate their decent, like the quicker they hit the bottom the quicker they can get better.
I'm just wondering, why do people think this is true? Are there any studies that actually state this? It seems like a really important thing to be just guessing about.

FeatureReqeustFilter: I think it would be cool if we gave users a way to 'pre-flag' their own comments as being frivolous. Other users would then be able to automatically filter out frivolous comments. So users (like me) who find comments like
this totally hilarious would be able to see them, and users who wanted substantive discussion could also get that.

I realize that metafilter is a better place to talk about this sort of thing, but what is there to say? Metafilter: the plastic.com it's OK to like.
It seems like metafilter has had the same few slogans on the main page for a
long time. People always post funny suggestions for mefi taglines in the the threads, but they're never adopted.
My request: Matt, geton the ball and and some new taglines.
