MeFi post: Critics justify their existence.
What does that phrase "inconsistencies in artist's argument" even mean? How is an album of songs an argument?

Even setting lyrics aside, if a musician puts together a bunch of songs and releases an album, it is an argument, an aesthetic one. I mean, I'm sure you can find some experimental/avant-garde wacko exceptions where the musician is purposely trying to make songs that they think sound awful, but generally the... [more]

MeFi post: Remembering Matthew Shepard

Killing people makes me fearful, as I am also a person. I'm not trying to me smug here; it's rather silly to assume that someone who kills a black person wouldn't have the same capacity to kill a white person. Last I checked, skinheads kill each other in jail too.)

Capacity to kill a black/white person isn't the issue. To suggest that is just being disingenuous. Pretty much anybody has the capacity to kill another... [more]

MeFi post: Interviews with Venturous Writers
Nice. Cortazar on Hopscotch (spoilers):

To say he doesn’t kill himself is to destroy the book. The idea is that you or any other reader must decide. So you decide, the same as I, that Oliveira does not commit suicide. But there are readers who decide he does. Well, too bad for them. The reader is the accomplice, he has to decide.

MeFi post: Down By (Copyright) Law
The whole movie is basically the songs, though -- everything's synced to the songs, they drive the story. Changing the animation now would be like trying to take The Wizard of Oz as filmed, and composing new music to match the actors' mouths and movements.

Piece of cake then, right?

MeFi post: In everything that can be called art there is a quality of redemption
...down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid...The detective in this kind of story must be such a man. The story is his adventure in search of a hidden truth, and it would be no adventure if it did not happen to a man fit for adventure. He has a range of awareness that startles you, but it belongs to him by right, because it belongs to the world he lives in.

I dunno. Seems pretty appropriate given that the LHC creating a black hole is "yet to be observed," theoretical & hasn't been demonstrated.

MeFi post: So you want to be a hero?

III is the best, by the way, if you can get past all the feel-good early-90s PC crap.

QFG I-III are absolutely fantastic. IV and V....not so much. But the first three are gold.

QFGIII was alright but it seemed much shorter than the others. I like IV better than III for that reason, but IV was buggy as all heck.

By falling for the lure of obsession (just like Tim does, to the detriment of the real women in his life) players gives in to what they’ve just been told is a bad idea. So in the end, even though you know Tim should not REALLY be catching the princess if you’re trying to see something good happen with the story, it’s impossible to resist. So there’s an explosion — and presumably a nuclear explosion. Joke’s on you, you get what you asked for and what you were warned about.... [more]

What really happened is Staci started to loose her mind.

I am usually the opposite of a spelling Nazi-- the "skill" of spelling is nothing but rote memorization and the perfect example of a task best left to computers so humans can spend their time on things that require thinking. But nothing makes me "loose" respect for people faster than that particular typo.

MeFi post: Give us this day our daily unleaded

His way of dealing with the problem of evil in His creation takes longer than we think it should. Since He sees the big picture and we don't, we have to realize He does know what He is doing.

He does indeed expect us to cooperate with Him to alleviate suffering, but also at times He calls us to suffer ourselves.

If what He is doing ("the big picture") is unknowable by us, then how do we know that... [more]
