Which Shakespeare works should I read next?
If you sort the list chronologically, most of the plays you liked/loved are from 1599-1605, which approximates his creative peak, and the ones you disliked are from earlier in his career. IMO, his creative peak starts around 1596 with Merchant of Venice and starts going downhill after Macbeth in 1605. (Caveat: I prefer the histories and tragedies to the comedies.) Richard III is great and I'd consider it an exception.... [more]

How can I get past my scars?
Still so young to travel so far
Old enough to know who you are
Wise enough to carry the scars
Without any blame, there's no one to blame

What was life like in the 1980's?
Wall Street (1987) and The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) for New York in the '80s.
Richard Lester's The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers.
American Graffiti (1973) does a great job of recreating the early 1960s. National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) is pretty good at depicting about the same time period.
L.A. Confidential recreates 1950s Los Angeles.... [more]

You also might like Fringe. It's pretty similar to X-Files and I think the first season's on DVD.

Musicians covering themselves?
Paul McCartney, studio and live (with Wings) versions of "Coming Up."
Foo Fighters, original and acoustic versions of "Everlong" are quite different.
Squeeze: the album and single versions of "Goodbye Girl" have slightly different lyrics and instrumentation (as used to be common) and the live version from Six Squeeze Songs Crammed Into One 10-Inch Record is a much faster, more rocking arrangement.... [more]

Billy Bragg re-recorded "Greetings to the New Brunette" as "Shirley" on Reaching to the Converted.
R.E.M.'s Eponymous has different versions of several of their songs, including the original single version of "Radio Free Europe," a different vocal on "Gardening at Night," and the Mutual Drum Horn Mix of "Finest Worksong."

I don't want to eat sushi but I have to
I know "sushi" technically means the rice, but to most people "sushi" means the whole raw fish deal. Look, you lost a bet. I think you're morally obligated to have raw fish, which means sashimi considering your dietary restrictions. Anything like vegetarian sushi, rolls that barely have any fish in them, yadda yadda yadda, wouldn't satisfy the terms of the bet in my mind, they'd be skating by on a technicality.
According to your profile you're in San... [more]

Damn the Torpedoes!
Chuck Yeager. He broke the sound barrier, with broken ribs. He bailed out of an F-104A, the rocket from the ejector seat crashed into his helmet, and he parachuted down with his face on fire. Hardcore!
Giles Corey. He was crushed to death with stone weights during the Salem witch trials. "After two days, Giles was asked three times to plead innocent or guilty to witchcraft. Each time he replied, 'More weight.'" Hardcore!... [more]

JFK wrote a book called Profiles in Courage about politicians who put their reputations on the line to do what they thought was right.
"Wrote" should be in quotes.

Do Brits sound American?
Joseph Fiennes and Sonya Walger are both British and play an American couple on FlashForward, both convincingly.
Most British actors doing American accents do well. Most American actors doing British accents are not so good.

I thought Michael Caine's accent was very good in The Cider House Rules, and Tom Wilkinson's usually very good.

the city...! the lights! the bustle! ...the traffic?
San Francisco has pairs of one-way streets with timed lights that get you across town quickly. Bush and Pine run east-west, as do Oak and Fell. Franklin and Gough run north-south (take them instead of Van Ness if possible).
The layout's confusing because there are a couple of street grids at angles to each other, and they collide at Market Street. I don't have a solution for that other than to figure out which streets you can cross Market on.

What films have identical or very similar shots?
Road to Perdition has several shots that recall Millers Crossing. There's one where a car is parked on a country road next to a forest, and I think there's one with guys in long coats carrying Thompson machine guns and going up stairs.

Men and girls
In casual or romantic contexts with friends, I've used "girl" to refer to women around my age or younger. I'll also use "boys" to say "I'm going out with the boys" (I'm straight). I use "women" in a more serious or formal context, like women should be paid the same as men for the same jobs. Using "girls" and "men" or any other unequal combination is tacky and offensive.
And I thought everyone knew the female... [more]

Gender-bending Song Covers
Maybe this part of the question is in invisible ink:
"The lyrics must not be changed. If the original female singer was waxing lyrical about her man, so too must the male cover singer, and vice versa."

Help ensure my websites display beautifully now and into the future!
Coding A HTML 5 Layout From Scratch is a decent tutorial.
The current versions of Internet Explorer can't handle HTML5 for layout without a little JavaScript help: HTML5 enabling script.
It's called html5shiv. "Shim" would probably be more appropriate than "shiv," but due to my long and bitter experience with IE I'm glad it's named after something you stab someone with in prison.... [more]
