Macs
Treo represent!
Actually, I find the Linux figure very interesting. That's getting up to being a respectable chunk. I recall when Macs would be less than 5% of typical website traffic (eg back in the days when Google still published OS stats in the Zeitgeist), and Linux+Unix together less than 1%.

I've never used that feature, because I haven't seen any upright poles, stakes or supports that struck me as fantastic yet.

I flagged it hoping it would be side-barred. Other serious comments/posts have been side-barred before. As jokeefe says: extraordinary.

I understand the "cheapening" aspect - the word "favourite: hardly captures how I feel about that comment, and if you think the sidebar is for fluffy kittens, then it's wrong to treat that comment as cute fluffy kitten. But I think of both favourites and the sidebar as blunt instruments for attracting attention, and I'm totally ok with doing that, especially for something that I think merits more attention than anything else we have seen recently.

Clinton Obama Filter redux
Gah! No!
There are many, many sites that already do American politics where this will be discussed to death.
It was a crappy post, and it should stay dead. "But it's important!" is a terrible excuse. I understood Metafilter was about interesting, not important.

the new contacts page is leaving me wanting...
The thing about having yourself as a contact (and I too am among the super-vain who've exploited the "edge case") is that you then finally see what other people see about what you've been doing, boring and mundane as that may be. i_am_joe's_spleen had a best answer in Is "bonzer" bonzer? 9 days ago. Awesome!

Mefi Made Me See The Light!
Like jouke, for me MeFi has made Americans far more real and three-dimensional (likewise, but to a proportionately lesser extent, various other nationalities). And I too am no longer a prescriptivist, which was a real blow to my prose-snarking ego.
Those things aside, the only thing I can say is that my confidence in strong assertions has been weakened as time after time I have seen well-constructed arguments deconstructed and countered, including my own. Can't say I've... [more]

You have blown my cover, Plutor. I'm actually the last of the Time Lords, hiding in the Antipodes... actually, the date shows as 20th March for me; where do you see 3rd March?
The meetup was eventually held at Murphy's, a (to coin a phrase) bog-standard faux Irish joint still littered with the St Pat's day decorations. (There was unfortunately a private function up at Mighty Mighty, which is my fave Wellington bar ever). I arrived 6ish with a certain amount of beer... [more]

Unfortunately, neither IE6 nor IE7 support SVG. It's a wonderful, wonderful tool, but the chances of major websites being built around it in the next 3 years are nil.
I have often thought that a killer web app that requires Firefox will get people to install it. Hell, people used to buy whole computers so they could run Visicalc or 123. Installation of Firefox is a pretty low bar in comparison.

Magnanimity
"it is not a mechanism for societal change"
Maybe not, but I think it is extremely helpful in creating the conditions for social change. When people can plan, when they have trust in their fellows, when they can have faith in self-built institutions, and above all when they can obtain investment capital to liberate a little time and a few extra calories, they are far more likely to be able to organise politically.

The Australian Election Thread
I salute you marvellous Australians from across the Tasman sea, and agree that this is a far better approach. I am so filled with loathing for the current American government that my blood could probably be refined and used as an anti-Republican vaccine, but I am heartily sick of the weak and frequent American politics posts.

Nah, this post was crap.
Call me a metahypocrite, but back in the day, this is what alt.tasteless was for. It'd be great for Fark or Sensible Erection. But Metafilter? We have standards.
If we're going to have autoerotic asphyxiation by self-loathing moralists on the front page, there needs to be a redeeming feature that makes it art.

No, this doesn't have any edifying or redeeming qualities. To sidebar this would be to invite gawpers to the car accident. Surely a sidebar item should have more going for it than sheer prurient interest.

Country/Region/Location tags?
Whenever it might make a difference, I prefix my answer with "in my country" or "where I live". And I read the question.
I have pretty much given up on expecting the US contingent to acknowledge that the rest of the world exists, so I assume that when no region is mentioned in a question, it will in fact be the US, or failing that the wider Anglosphere. It's obvious most answerers do.
I have observed that even where... [more]

Read the guidelines. Distastefulness, immorality, hatefulness do not figure as grounds for deletion far as I can tell. And I think that's a good thing.

I am a) fascinated by the whole thing and b) utterly opposed to an FPP on it. It's US news/politics-centric and deadly dull and not best of the web and anyone remotely interested can go to Firedoglake and read about it in excruciating details.

It's inevitable with relationship AskMe. We will never hear about all the wonderful aspects of the future Mrs Sequential, and of necessity even a lengthy description can't capture what may be essential nuances.
But ThePinkSuperhero has a point - one can't help leaping to conclusions given that series of questions, even if they are rash ones.
