On your bumper and accelerating
I do it for danOstuporStar's reasoning. I figure if I'm in a line of 6 cars going 80 mph, my chances of getting nabbed are much less than if I were flying past every car on my own. Safety in numbers. As long we're still passing cars in the "fast lane," I'm happy.

Is a mattress cover really necessary?
I use one for one reason: the smell and keeping it clean. Sheets get dirty and I can clean them easily. Sleeping right on the mattress itself causes it to get dirty and is a pain to clean.

XP Filter: I set up a non admin account for safer computing -- Am I safe enough now?
From the article:
"Starting with Windows XP, a blank password is actually more secure for certain scenarios than a weak password (emphasis mine)." Don't use a password- use a passphrase. For instance, I could use "jmd82 rocks the c@sb@h!" for MeFi. Easy to remember and infinitely more secure than a blank password. And passwords beyond 14 characters are very hard to crack using brute force.

How can I use my law degree and still like my life?
Too add on to the idea of a patent lawyer, my uncle's a bankruptcy lawyer. For the most part, he has to do little arguing or persuading. It's usually people coming, "Yea, I'm broke. What do I do?" and filling out financial forms of which there is little ambiguity.

How much can an obvious typo cost?
Online retailers have taken to not taking the money from your account until the goods actually ship - this givens them a bit of time between you placing an order and them realising they've mispriced their expensive digital SLR camera at 1/10th the price they planned to before it becomes binding, so they can cancel the order before it ships.
That's what I was thinking. I frequent the SlickDeals forums and there's a too-good-to-be-true price every so... [more]

What can my wife do with her Child Development Degree and Teaching Credential
Does she want to stay in education? I have a number of college friends who graduated with similar degrees and now work at Cox Communication, State Farm, Chase etc. For a lot of them, it seems that the degree says more, "HEY, I can learn," than it does, "Hey, I know about this field." So, I would suggest she try some networking and/or apply for entry-level positions at jobs, stressing the fact she has a degree.

Moving old data to a new drive
I did the same exact thing you're asking earlier this week and it was very straight-forward. Just make sure BIOS is configured to load the new 640 gig HD first and all should be well. When you load XP, extent your notification area to start detecting new hardware- this is the old, 160 gig HD. Give XP a few it'll just be loaded as another hard drive. Select and drag.

How should I cool my three year old processor?
Don't may get proper thermal compounds, it is a must, particularly if you plan on overclocking. Without having used either of the linked heatsinks, copper is better for transferring heat from one area to another, so all other things equal, I'd go with an all-copper heatsink

Will I be able to use my future iPhone's data plan to surf on my laptop?
I don't understand why Apple or AT&T would fight utilizing data plans in this way. It seems silly.
a) They don't want users using a cell phone's data plan in place of their home cable/dsl line due to the much greater bandwidth used. b) ATT already offers a more expensive similar wireless service to take the place of tethering and would rather make the extra money that comes from using 3G as your main Internet service.... How can I learn the proper way to deal with permissions on a Windows server when I am clearly a n00b?
You need to set both Share and Security (NTFS) permissions. Both are tabs when you right click-->properties on a file or folder object. The Share security is so people can have given permissions at that share level and I usually set this at FC- everyone (lock down in NTFS permission). For instance, if you have a share at //server/office and I have full control NTFS permissions but no share permissions, I can't access anything. In that case, for the personal folder, you'll want to go into your security tab, click advanced, and turn off the checkmark "inherit from parent permission..."
Otherwise, all users in groups assigned permissions for the office folder will propogate to the child folders- in this case, personal, giving people access who shouldn't (that is assuming you're assigning any security restrictions at the office folder level).
Other than that, you should be able to just... [more]

Remove anything listed in the permissions entries, then immediately click Add and enter SYSTEM as the username, give that full control. Also add your Administrators group as full control.
Technically speaking, if you're not running any services from the folders (ie, they're a bunch of excel and word files), SYSTEM doesn't need to be added.

I had a bad case in high school and asked a doctor about it. His response amounted to, "You can rest and it won't hurt as much, but it won't really speed up the healing process."
I'm not sure if that was true or not- being young and invincible, I didn't care. Regardless, I still ran with the injury (as much one could call it running) and it took me months to recover.

My company's firewall is blocking my website. Is there anything I can do on my end to fix this?
Reason that works is, they'll see "ibm.com", and think you're trying to access a perfectly legitimate website.
OTOH, firewalls I've dealt with use port and IP filtering. Depends on the service.
Also be warned that if your IT people learn you're using a proxy or tunnel, they may not be happy with you going around the firewall. I would go Mr. Anthropomorphism's route and try to get on the whitelist.

I think JJ86 means that in a lot of cities, a lot of lights turn green when a car approaches the white line instead of being on a timer. Ethanol doesn't eat fuel lines, and fuel lines have been synthetic rubber for a long, long time now anyway. Seriously any car from about 1995 on (more like 1985) will run E85 fine, you'll just get poor mileage.
Do you have any documentation to this? The corrosive nature and eating away at my fuel systems is one of the first reasons not to use e85 in a normal car that I've heard from people who seem to know about this stuff.

Ah right, good call about the PICe or AGP distinction.
I think you're asking two different questions though: I'm not aware of dual GPU format MBs, and even if they did exist, I highly doubt the price would justify the purchase.
Regarding dual/quad core CPUs, most modern MBs will take either, though it sometimes requires a BIOS update.
Regarding the cheap dual-cores, I'm a big fan of the e21xx line. I can overclock to 3.0 Ghz on air without an issue.
