Why can't I drink Lactaid milk?
You may have what I have.
I'm missing a series of enzymes that break down milk fat and certain other things. I'm only able to drink skim milk, and only small amounts of cheese, ice cream, or yogurt. If I indulge, then I have your reaction. Whole milk I simply vomit up soon after drinking it.
Red meat and most pork also sits like lead, so I avoid them.
This is something that runs in my family- both my sister and I have it, all my cousins, my son.

Purse contents for the perpetually prepared person
I have a small first aid kit and lip gloss in the front pocket, and post it notes and gum in the back pocket. Then inside I have my digital camera, my Nintendo DS lite, a small (palm sized) five-star notebook, a change purse, my wallet, my keys, and whatever paperback I can squeeze in. Then when I'm note wearing it in my holster, I shove my cellphone in there too.

What do sound techs and band managers actually do?
Wow, that's a lot of information. I didn't think to use wikipedia. Do you know if a click track can be played through a drummer's In Ear Monitor?
And I was thinking more band manager, which is why I wondered what he did on tour if there was a tour manager present. Probably should have worded that better.

I'm in Central Jersey, very close to South Amboy. But my husband travels all over Jersey, and doesn't mind heading further out.

Yo- oh god!
I credit yoga with helping me drop a bunch of pounds, and eliminating reoccurring tension headaches.
I'd just be happy with touching my toes. :)
Thanks, I'll look around and see if there's any classes in my area.

Red fish, blue fish, big breasted fish
I really like what rob has there. I had gotten away from Manatees and was thinking something like:
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Subphylum: Vertebrata
Class: Mammalia
Subclass: Australosphenida
Order: Monotremata
But then I lose steam there.

Um, I should probably mention that the picture is pretty huge, and before someone brings it up "looks like a drawing or photo" translates from me speak to "this is a photo manipulation because I don't have actual figure drawing talent."

my father-in-law co-wrote that particular fish-tale
Wow, that's so cool. I loved that movie as a kid, so I used it because of that.
And while it looks like watercolors, the whole piece is a digital photo manipulation. I just used a bunch of different filters, blends, and smudging until it had a soft, sheer painted look.
Glad you like it though. I was rather pleased with the outcome.

Where to open a group blog for a non-fiction writing group?
Livejournal for all its faults, pretty much fits all your requirements.
If you want livejournal, but only 18+, then try journalfen.net. It's a livejournal clone on a 18+ only server, and it's for journals fans of movies, television, music and other forms of media entertainment.
Creation at journalfen is turned off, but if you contact the admins, they can set something up for you.

Fingers melting! Why? What'll stop it?
If you started using a new soap or started a new project that's hands on, you may want to stop to see if this clears up. But you should see a doctor.
In the mean time, try looking for something at the local drugstore called Crack Cream. It's mostly clove oil, and excellent with extremely dry skin.

What's it like to give birth?
Found this post through Metatalk, and while I'm late to the thread, I thought I'd add in my experiences.
I didn't know I was pregnant the first three months. I felt run down, and working in a school, just thought I had the flu. I had no traditional morning sickness.
In fact, I sat in the teachers' room and declared that I was never having kids, because raising other peoples' kids all day was stressful enough, and that I couldn't take the leaking... [more]

How young is too young
My friend George is a nice guy. He started dating his girlfriend when he was 17 and she was 14. He graduated and sort of drifted, didn't go to college. Her parents decided he lacked ambition and wasn't good enough for their daughter, and tried chasing him off. But he refused to be chased because he thought he loved the girl. At 19, her parents pressed statutory rape charges after finding a used condom in her room.
He's thirty now, and has to register as a sex offender.... [more]

what does it take to be a foster parent in New Jersey?
Are you fostering through the system?
Is there another way? I'm just in the first stages of figuring this out. It's my cousin's kid. She wants him out, and I'm willing to take him. Beyond that right now is just me googling and making phone calls.

What about being able to make decisions for the child instead of the parent? Would something notarized from her giving me that power work, or is this definitely something to be worked out by a lawyer?

Okay, after talking to our insurance company, they will not cover this child under guardian care or fostering. Only adoption, which is not an option at this time. Therefore to get him covered with some sort of medical care, it will have to be done through the system.
We can't afford to cover a child out of pocket. One serious injury or illness would bankrupt us.

Blogging 101
I am late to the party, but thought I'd still put in my opinion. I have two LiveJournals, and two Blogger blogs. The first one I had was a Livejournal, user name tangletoy. I started it after finding and adoring the blogs Swallowing Tacks and LittleYellowDifferent. I loved how they wrote and other commented, so social. But I didn't have web space, and had the html skills of a turnip. At the time I was reading a magazine called YahooLife or something like that, and LiveJournal got a mention. That... [more]

What book(s) on babies worked for you?
I didn't read many books. I read a lot of magazines, because the information seemed more up to date. I also took parenting classes. After the baby was born though, I picked up 'The Baby Owner's Manual' by a husband and wife team. I still use it today. ISBN: 1-931686-26-8
It's fun, and explains everything very simply. Now I give it at every baby shower I go to.

How do I cut my curly (medium curls), shoulder length hair by myself?
I have long curls, romantic looking curls and I've never had a hair cut I've liked. Since I was thirteen, I've never been to the same barber or salon twice. At this point, I cut my own hair, because if it's going to look fucked up, I might as well be the one to do it for free. This is the best trick I've come up with for layers.
Ben over so your hair hangs down. Make a pony tail at the very top of your head. It has to be the very top. Then slide the tie down as far as... [more]

Wedding/reception tips, anyone?
The wedding is for you and your wife. The reception is a party for the guests. If you remember that, you'll be fine. Don't do a cash bar. Don't play only one genre of music. Dance with everyone. Set out disposable cameras, and look the other way if they don't come back to you. Add some sort of candy to your favor. Invite your family - kids too. Low centerpieces so people can talk over them, and look out across the room. Set aside a half hour and walk around to greet each table. Tell everyone... [more]

I crave chocolate, but am allergic. A little Bailey's Irish Creme mixed with milk though sort of tastes like chocolate milk to me though, so it solves the craving. The other one is salt, and I buy a big bag of Goldfish crackers. I defeat the craving, and then turn over the snacks to my husband and son, who then finish the bag.

Mine feel like a heart attack, so I generally retreat to somewhere I can lay down and curl up on my side. That or I take a shot of something and tell myself it's not happening.
