Ram, gang, ram!
Zombie movies became popular when we stopped knowing our neighbors names and participating in community building the way shows like Happy Daze idealize.
The people outside in our own personal bubbles become nameless homunculus shuffling around our space. And with the media constantly feeding us scare stories from cancer causing fruit to spontaneous acts of violence on the bus, we assign these others with malicious intent towards us.
But I've... [more]

For use on slow zombies only.
The hilarious thing about my generation is that if an actual war broke out on our home soil, we would probably run around like chickens with our heads caught off. Yet we're prepared for a zombie invasion.

Mormon vampires?
I hate this series so much, more so because there are teachers and librarians and women who are supposed to have two brain cells to rub together, who are recommending this book to teenage girls. I think if caught, these women should have their vaginas revoked.

Iirc, I got this graphic from a women's rights thread here on Metafilter. But I keep it and post it in my own journal when I speak about women's reproductive and sexual rights.

It's not the rich women married to the policy makers that will suffer these consequences. Those that can afford to have a baby will be the ones with enough money to travel to those willing to give them birth control or abortions.
The women who will suffer are the ill educated and poor, unable to get to those that can provide for them. And the pro-lifers who have the money to support protests (and bombings and policies) will not be adopting house fulls of abandoned... [more]

Past Present Future Me You Someone Else
There's a love of zombies in popular culture today because of how the way we live is changing.
Sorry, I know what I mean in my head, but it's hard for me to explain it out loud.
See, we're all in this connected disconnect where we would rather talk to someone across the room via IM than turn around and engage in actual conversation. We're shrinking our world to the few feet around our own two feet. So the people outside in our own neighborhoods... [more]

Espresso on Ice is Not Okay
Man, don't fuck with people and their coffee. That way lies danger.
In the morning I pour it in my husband's mug, push it into our room with the end of a broom handle, and then clear out until the caffeine hits his system. He, in return, does not speak to me or look me in the eye until I've had at least two cups of the stuff.
I think baristas should be protected behind shatter proof glass and forced to pass the cups through a cut out by the... [more]

Is Day Care a luxury or a benefit?
I can't really warp my head around day care that costs $54K a year per child.
It depends on the care provided. I know the state pays just over $40,000 a year for my son to attended a program for kids on the autistic spectrum.

"Angered guys may try to humiliate the women, or they may enter a spiral of asking repeatedly* because God forbid their ego has to deal with a rejection. The idea that every woman in the world must be sexually attracted to you is ridiculous.

I'm surprised you didn't link to any of the controversy.
They apparently recorded the song and video with the intention of including it on their new album and using the video to hook in the Pete Wentz guyliner crowd to expand their fanbase and cross into a new market.
However, the video hit the forums and the Roots fans hated it and called the group sell outs. The fan reaction was so hot that they turned around and said the song wouldn't be... [more]

Mr. Mom
why they didn't just adopt.
There could be many reasons.
Adoptive parents have to go through a background check and sign contracts that the information that they provide is the truth. If he says nothing about being transgendered and the information comes out later, then the couple could be accused of trying to deceive the state and rejected. However, if they're upfront about the information, they could face the same... [more]

Could the prude and the sexist fuck off
You acknowledge what he said was sexist, and because I called him on it and speak up for myself as a woman that makes me a prude, meaning ... if I could just get myself fucked by some man, I wouldn't care when someone said something sexist?
Seriously?

A friend of mine made some really good points after looking at the link, so I'm just going to drag them over here.
The idea that this is about "the health of Americans" is false. It's about a perceived drain on the healthcare system.
If you believe that the majority of obese persons are lower-income and it's about class, then you have to accept that the 'health issues' that this bill is supposedly going to help them avoid... [more]

The OCD Post
I've always had little weird tics and rituals, but nothing really intrusive or noticeable by others until I was in high school. My food couldn't touch. It got so my mom bought a divided plate.
I grew out of the divided plate when it morphed into eating one thing at a time before moving to the next. If I have chicken, green beans, and corn on my plate, then I eat all the green beans, then all the corn, then all the chicken. If I make a mistake or leave the table, I drink... [more]

Heath Ledger dies
It's weird now because before it was older actors dying and my mom saying things like, "I remember their first role." Then she'd tell me about some commercial or movie that this older actor appeared in.
Now it's people I've seen come up. Remember the television show Roar and how terrible it was? From there to Brokeback Mountain seemed a second.

The Devil (and Joe Quesada) Made Him Do It
Quesada has said on more than one occasion that he hated the Parker marriage and that he thought marriage defined the character too strictly, and that more could be done plot-wise if Peter Parker were single.
When Fangirls Attack have been linking to a lot of commentary on that.
My opinion is that it's pretty sad that a stable of writers can't sustain interest in a marriage, when the marriage itself is only one part of a multifaceted character... [more]

But it wasn't a divorce or annulment here.
What happened here was one man hating a fictional marriage so much that he wiped it out entirely so that it never happened, enabling him to clean slate any character development made since the beginning of the character to go backward into a place Peter Parker has already been.
Fans already read through the Spider-Man awkward years where he lived with his aunt. Instead of being allowed to mature, maybe... [more]

Scoutmaster
Another alternative to boy scouting is your state park system. I'm not sure what the programs look like in other states, but New Jersey has activities for all ages that have to do with the environment and scout-like activities. There's a fee attached to a lot of them, but the most they've asked of me is $40, which was well worth it for the couple hours of crafting and hiking that my husband and I did with our four year old.
Most parks have pamphlets with activities and... [more]
