MeTa post: Your solitary compulsion becomes a shared experience.
I have to hope that with a lot of these "me too's" - as I certainly do with this one on blurting - that there's a large, silent sector of the hive that doesn't associate with the behavior and thus just choose not to respond.

I'm sure thats true. But its not just the number of responses, its also the breadth of responses usually from a diverse set of mefites all chiming in to say that they experience this too, even if its a small subset of the... [more]

MeTa post: London meetup, Saturday 26th July?
We should be there. Flexible on dates as well.

Wow. Both plep and louigi are among the mefites I'd most like to meet...Damn!

Regarding this meetup, its been my experience (from SF meetups) that no time is ever good for everybody. The only solution is to have more frequent meetups and let people attend when they can...

In other words, I count about 8-10 definite attendees from the comments above. That sounds like a meetup to me!

MeTa post: MetaFilter: It is what it is
Because of the current "first post stays unless the poster of the first post requests his gets taken down" policy NewsFilter is going to be dominated by single link news site posts. Though I haven't thought of a better policy for this kind of situation myself.

Funny. I thought about this too. The only thing I came up with is this:

Posts made to the front page appear on the front page right away but no... [more]

MeTa post: "Wow, look at the Boobies!"
I thought it was fun, if a bit silly. I'm not seeing how female breasts equate with sexism.

But then again, what do I know, I'm the European admin. I see many more breasts than this on a trip to the beach. And I'm sure everyone there is also wondering "real or fake"??

"Get out if you don't like it", here, at Metafilter?

Sort of seconding what prefpara said. There are a few assholes in this thread. But there are assholes in every metatalk thread, unfortunately.

I think reasonable discourse also involves not plucking out the extremist positions from the other side and using them to characterize the other side of the argument. There are other people here trying to have a conversation... [more]

I was told by my neighbor that Miguel is alive and well.

Well, he recovered from his recent surgery but otherwise haven't heard much from/about him recently.

Noobai Cafe in Lisbon.

Pics of me are linked off my mefi profile page.

Great Goblindegook!

I do have to move it though.

if you (and others) dont mind! Because of a lunch beforehand, 2pm will be tight for us. How about we move this to 3:30 to be safe? We'll definitely be there!

Well, if he was there he was incognito!

Sorry to disappoint everyone, it was, in the end, just me and mrs. vacapinta.

On the other hand, Noobai is a great cafe with a patio overlooking Lisbon harbor, great food and drinks and even warm blankets for the guests if things get chilly (which they sometimes do, even in Lisbon)! So we had a fantastic time...anyways. :)

MeTa post: 5 minutes of great reading.
Gettysburg (ok, that's a battle in the civil war, yeh?) - Sickles (who?) - Cemetry Ridge (where? is that supposed to be famous for something?) - Union lines (wait, is Sickles Union or the other dudes?) - Wilcox? Lee? Longstreet? WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE?

To be fair, the very first link "Gettysburg" provides most of the context for people lacking it. I'm aware of and a strong opponent of the sometimes exclusive AmericaFilter, but I dont... [more]

Thanks all! I had told Matt I was moving to Europe and he had asked me if I could help by checking on mefi during the US midnight hours.

Since I've been frantically reloading mefi for the past 7 years, its about time I made myself useful as well...

MeTa post: Making questions clearer
Its not just phrasing. I saw the liquor thread earlier today before cortex started clipping away.

Lots of "Well, for me the liquor that makes me sick is XYZ. Can't drink it. Nope." Ok...thanks, but how does that answer the question?

MeTa post: A couple minor feature requests fulfilled
So why not have the catagories actually be:
Available
Not available
Non-standardly available (or something less awkaward here, I'm not even convinced this one is necessary)

That can be further simplified to 'Available' and blank.

It looks like they just copied the 'Taken','Open' etc from Flickr which has those same categories.

MeTa post: Two weeks are better than one (in this case)
As others have hinted above, this is not the solution. It frustrates people who have an occasional need without significantly affecting the overall traffic.

Annoying everybody while doing little to solve the actual problem reminds me of how bad security policies are implemented.

There are two reasons why one might want less traffic on ask metafilter:

1) You enjoy reading it and feel overwhelmed.

How about numbers? The fraction of posts that could not have been posted when they were posted if the waiting period was 14 days (not counting AnonyMe posts):

Something doesn't feel quite right about those statistics.

Let's say someone waited 7 days and then posted on 2-10. You're now counting them as excess since they wouldn't have been able to post with a 14-day rule. Ok, fine.

Now, that same person... [more]

The site search tools only address posts, comments, and tags, and the profiles themselves are explicitly NOINDEXed, so Google and other reputable bot-owners are blind to them.

Man, the noise in Ask Me really annoys me.

Call me a hard-liner but I think if N number of your comments get removed from Ask Metafilter, there should be an instant week-long timeout perhaps with an accompanying email: "It looks like rather than being part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Please take a week off to understand how Ask Metafilter works."

Whats with this obsession over button-pushers? Plenty of people have left the site for good, abandoning their accounts, without ever pushing any button.

Its not hard to get 'last active' given that its fast to check all three subsites. Or did you mean "last looked at the site" matt? That is creepy.

Heh. The "fuel costs notwithstanding" is completely ridiculous.

Because I'm taking a lot of stuff to my flight to Europe next week, I looked up the baggage allowances on United. The average person can only take 2 50lb bags. I, buying the same ticket for the same price, can take 3 70lb bags! Only because I have status on the airline, no other reason.

So, yeah, I'm agreeing that that particular comment really sucks.

Then give me some PRACTICAL advice. I hear plenty of bitching from people who are annoyed by kids, but NEVER any practical advice. Impractical?

For what its worth, bugbread, I'm probably one of the most frequent flyers in this thread (Premier Exec on United) and I don't mind kids at all. They can be kind of entertaining actually and even when they're a bit obnoxious...well, they're kids. That's part of their nature. Sometimes when they're screaming and... [more]
