Crazy Russian Historian?

Who is the supposed historian (may be an ex-physicist, think he's Russian) who had demonstrated that human written history is only half as old as we believe it to be? I think the core of his argument was that documents referring to events thousands of years ago, actually referred to events hundreds of years ago, that history was fore-shortened.

DIY Phone Routing for International Calls?

If it costs me, say, 2 cents a minute to call a landline in Europe and, say, 25 cents a minute to call a cell phone in that same city- why isn't there a service (in Europe) that allows me to call a landline which connects my call to a mobile phone (and charges me 5 cents a minute or a monthly charge or whatever) Or, is there?

Did Clement Cadou exist?

In Enrique Vila-Matas novel Bartleby & co. everyone seems to be real. He talks about Duchamp, for example, and about B. Traven, the mysterious author of Treasure of the Sierra Madre. But he also talks about Clément Cadou, a supposed painter who only painted furniture and dubbed them "self-portraits" and whose epitaph was about himself, as a piece of furniture. Is Cadou real?

I stopped trusting Apple

So the new Itunes 7 was just released but I am a little wary. Is there anyplace I can go (or keep my eye on) to see what, if any, restrictions have been introduced by the new Itunes. I am thinking things like Network-sharing (incompatibility with Ourtunes?), Limits on how many times you can burn, etc.? Or will I just have to watch and wait?

Places to interview

SanFranciscoFilter: I'm an interviewer for my college. I'd like to meet my interviewees downtown but am looking for help on nice, quiet locations. Hotel lobbies, like the Hyatt Regency? Some cafe with quiet, plush seats where we can talk. No bars, as my interviewee will be a high-school senior. Thanks!

Multiple day hikes? I'm interested in information on hikes that take place over a series of days. The caveat is that at the end of each day, you arrive in some lodge or other place even though the hike itself is fairly rural.

Payroll: Who watches the watchers?

Idle Corporate Question: Has anyone here worked in a Payroll department? I know that one of the great taboos in large corporations is that nobody else knows how much everyone else makes (subordinates excluded.) But, what about a Payroll department. Do they each know how much everyone else in their department makes? Or, is their own information segmented off somehow?

Unix Logging

Linuxfilter: I have a third-party app which writes occasional messages to its logfile. The problem is I dont know when these messages are logged. There is no timestamp - just the message. Is there any way I could force a timestamp? Maybe some trickery with 'tail-f' and 'date' and pipes into some new pseudo-logfile? Thanks.

id fraud or simple misdelivery?

My friend just got a paycheck in the mail. It had obviously been opened and then scotch-taped back up. Also, it arrived a couple days later than she expected it. Inside was the intact paycheck and stub. Problem is the stub also had her full name, SSN #, and of course salary and workplace. Should she be worried? If this was ID theft why would they have taped it back up? I'm curious too about what may have happened here.

File Hosting

File Hosting question: What is a good Hosting Provider or other online service where I can upload (ftp?) any type of file (digicam movies, legal mp3s, huge zipfiles etc.) for a reasonable price for bandwidth and storage. This is not for a website so hosting tools, domain services etc. are not a concern. Any OS is fine although Linux/Unix would be coolest.

Somewhat related to grumblebee's question below...

Somewhat related to grumblebee's question below but not really: I have an uncanny sense of time. I never wake up to an alarm because I spontaneously wake up a minute or two before it goes off and reach out and shut it off. Also, If asked to guess the time after not having looked at a clock for a day, I am usually within 10 minutes or so. Firstly, what exactly is the "internal clock" and how does it differ among people? Secondly, is my behavior typical or is it at an extreme?

How do I load a series of different URLs into different windows/tabs as fast as possible? The reason I ask is that a regular train ride I take stops for about 15 seconds at a station with wireless access. I'd like to load pages which I can then read for the rest of the trip but even opening new windows and launching bookmarks is manual and slow. Any ingenious ideas?

A friend with a free Blogger account has asked me to recommend a way to track visits to her site (e.g. hits, views, maybe even geography and IPs.) She'd prefer something invisible (no big tracker badge) and is willing to pay. I don't have any experience with any and Google fails to distinguish anything useful. Suggestions?

I've heard it mentioned, as recently as this thread that when you learn a foreign language as an adult , you never lose your accent. Kissinger is always brought up as an example. Is this true or is this an urban myth? Also, what if you were brought up bilingual and speak two (or more) languages flawlessly. If you learned a third language, what determines which accent you will have?
