Burhanistan: "Am I a bad person for imagining various scenarios in which all attendees at the MTV awards are mercilessly slaughtered. It's pretty pedestrian stuff, really. Bulldozers, flaming arrows, WWII fighter planes strafing everyone with machine guns, the RCMH slowly flooding with everyone trapped inside, rabid packs of wolves, usual stuff. None of it involves explosions or anything that might guarantee quick death. The more screaming and panic the better. At the end,... [more]

Stranger danger
don't talk to strangers. Sweet and simple.
That's a shame, I feel richer for having had parents who included me in conversations when they were talking with people they ran into, and taught me to be polite and friendly but also to have common sense when I was quite young.

When my daughter was four, she went to a safety seminar thing with my wife and came back with a VHS tape called "Stranger Danger" or something weird like that. It had rapping spokesbeasts and washed up regional rock bands singing songs about not talking to strangers and finding a policeman or adult if a stranger tries to talk to you.
Thing is, this stuff never worked because my daughter is never, ever, ever in a position of having to make that decision since we... [more]

In fairness to you Miko, I was being somewhat facetious. Of course she goes to camp, sleep-overs, etc. We've discussed with her what to do if she does not feel comfortable in situations or around certain people. It seems kids develop that sense much sooner that we give them credit for. I do have to admit that I was a hovering parent though, mostly out of my paranoia.

Misogyny? Come on.
There was quite a bit of T n' A (borderline nsfw) stuff on that page but for some reason Helena's sort of jumped out at me and struck me as just weird given the subject. It pissed me off so I wanted to link to just the text of the original article. My apologies for the choice of words and not keeping it out of the original thread.

nanojath: "How about this: if you can't ignore postage-stamp sized pictures on the borders of stuff you read, maybe you should stop using the internet. If you can't deal with this and want to provide alternative presentations of things, maybe you could use the time honored practices of diplomacy and say something like the new link offers a "cleaner presentation" or "less visual distractions." Or even "without the celebrity tabloid garbage on the edges.... [more]

Asploding Asian Girlfriend
Personally I wasn't offended by the wording of the post but sometimes in my zest for wanting the have a good time, I forget that others may perceive it differently. It's a delicate balancing act; wanting this place to be sort of rough and tumble yet taking a lot more perceptions into account when shooting off my mouth. I don't think I'll ever find that balance but the reactions in that post are a good measuring stick.

Back in the day we were lucky to have fonts let alone links. Christ, you kids these days and your "wah-wah-wah-I-want-links!"
Also, back in the day there were a lot of pantless posts. That's a whole other thread.

Miracle Whip Zingr?
I will pay to keep the ad up if only to piss off you "real mayo" food snobs. Not liking Miracle Whip is akin to hating family, Jesus, God, country, freedom, etc.. There is a reason they call it "Miracle" people!

Obits done right
Yes, it was a much better post than the original.
That said (and with all due respect to you and WCM), I don't get how obit posts are appropriate for MetaFilter. I did one once and it seemed weird to be reporting on something that was already all over CNN, the NYT and every other news outlet.
Obit posts really lack that "Hey look at what I found on the web" luster that MetaFilter has become known for.

MeFi has grown to be more of a large scale community, some sort of MeFi-attention to more newsish stuff seems appropriate.
That, to me, seems to be the most appropriate explanation for the number of obit posts. I can live with that. This ain't my daddy's MetaFilter in other words,
If they're done right, they have a depth and thought-provoking angle that makes them Metafilter-appropriate, even if they... [more]

I wasn't trying to do that, Languagehat. I was questioning the need for them based on how I've experienced them. WCM's post was a fine obit. No "bitchfest" from me.

Service: Love
I was thrown out of Steak n' Shake because of the ice cream trick. It didn't help that I had thirty Malaysian children, dressed in rags and spread across three tables, shaking their little ice/salt concoctions. That's the down-side of going for volume.

"they are risking their careers and their liberty"
"Officers who think ... that the ends justify the means or that 'taking shortcuts' and telling lies will not be discovered and punished should realize that they are risking their careers and their liberty," U.S. Attorney David Nahmias said.
Nothing like a Scooby-Doo wrap up sentence to out those evil-doers in their place.
I'm sure their prison stay will send a much more effective message.

"V" is for "Valiant"
I just read your blog entries. I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I won't pretend to know your pain but I do know your love for a daughter. Your experience will make others, including myself, pull them a little closer and appreciate them while they're here. My deepest condolences on your loss. I'm glad you are here.
