Bananaslug
is a serendipitous search engine. It uses the google API to mix your search term with a random seed and returns results that are probably orthogonal to what you were looking for. Minutes of fun.

Nufonia Must Fall
is a possibly unique silent film, shot in paperback with a soundtrack for piano and turntable instruments. For any web-enabled numerologists reading, it also has an interesting URL. Check out the
flash intro ...

Google Compute
is a
distributed computing project involving users of the
google toolbar. It's a light application which uses idle processor cycles to analyse data for "
carefully selected charitable projects, with the guiding principle being to help humanity and advance scientific knowledge".

HOP
draws beautiful abstract images and real-time animations, based on "strange attractor" formulas, enhanced by mathematical and graphical special effects. It's a unique interactive fractal generator, but doubles as a cute screensaver if you're feeling lazy
(runs in DOS/windows).

Bassic
has just finished a new track and I was also pretty impressed with the two quicktime videos on the site, which I hadn't seen before. Know of any other decent/successful artists who
promote themselves online, rather than through the recording industry?

Why the Bombings Mean That We Must Support My Politics
Those people who have different political views from me ought to be ashamed of themselves for thinking of cheap partisan point-scoring at a time like this.sorry if this is an oldie (i searched and everything) it just seemed ... relevant, somehow

Monkeys are capable of abstract reasoning
according to recent research, which may have "
profound implications for the evolution of human intelligence and the stuff that separates homo sapiens from other animals."
Just so long as there are enough bananas to go round, it's OK by me ...

The web isn't proper hypertext
says Ted Nelson, who probably invented the idea.
"I define hypertext as non-sequential writing ... the World Wide Web is not what we were trying to create. The links only go one way. There's no permanent publishing. There is no way you can write a marginal note that other people can see on what's in front of you. There is no way that you can quote freely. "
So is everyone fully comfortable with the idea of a "two way web", or are we still too hung up on picket fence territorialism? And how would it work, anyway?

World's indifference to the Afghan tragedy
If you read my article in full, It will take about an hour of your time. In this hour, 14 more people will have died in Afghanistan of war and hunger and 60 others will have become refugees in other countries.
A few months old, but well worth a read in current context ...
