Well, I have a Computer Science degree and a job to match. I'm slowly but surely working on an art degree (Art classes tend to be during the day) and easing my way out of the computer field forever. The thing is, I do have a mortgage and a wife (no kids, thank goodness) so I'd prefer not to starve and lose my house over it. Has anyone made such a switch from a professional pursuit to a personal pusuit, and do you have any info, resources, advice, etc. related to that change? How'd you make it happen? How'd you manage with a career and juggling college courses mostly offered during the day? How'd you make ends meet?

How to turn off broswer colors (for those wanting to modify MefI to be more work friendly, a thread that pops up here occasionally). More inside...

What would happen to Metafilter if Matt (heaven forbid) were to get hit by a bus or something? Is there a contingency plan in place? I could have just emailed Matt about this, but I thought some other people might also be interested in the answer.

Hi. I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature request... Why does the XML feed at
http://xml.metafilter.com/ strip out any HTML (namely links) out of the nodeValue of the body elements? Why does the feed at
http://www.metafilter.com/metafilter.xml provide a synopsis and a link to more while the previously mentioned feed shows the complete text (it also strips out HTML too)? Boy, it'd be nice to implement some XML-RPC functions for common tasks (posting, logging in, etc.) and spice up the XML feed so that a developer could build a different client for MeFi...

How many of the 13179 metafilter members actively participate (post and read) on a regular basis? Is that number the result of a SELECT MAX(user_identity) type SQL statement or is it calculated somehow based on readership and usage?
How many of these accounts are
test accounts? How many are
inactive? How many were created and then
never used or
rarely used to post over the previous 2 or 3 years? How many are
not Neale Talbot?
I'd love to see some histograms.

Is Metafilter totally data driven, partially data driven, or are new posts sort of tacked onto the end of text files? It seems like every feature request that I see involving views (language, filtering, etc.) could be easily solved with a fully data driven site and a couple of competent software engineers.

I'm trying to buy a computer- a newer one. My 'mental health', however, won't seem to let me. Extreme paranoia and crushing guilt. How much is too much to pay for a computer (we're talking PCs here, not Macs)? Well, that depends on how much one earns, right? Let's just say that money is not an issue for me.
Plus, I'm a software engineer. So, I'll be using it for more than porn and MeFi. Why can't I 'click here to check out'?
Tell me I'm not alone...
