A very quick and light-hearted 80-year-old I'm been sweet on since the day I was born is about to cast caution to the winds and enter the Internet. What chatty-but-literate merry widow and laughing cavalier websites should be fighting for her attention?

Please tell: Is it worth waiting 4 whole weeks for the 2GB RAM, 500 GB HD 24" iMac I want to arrive, if Apple here in Lisbon can bring me the standard 1GB, 250 GB set-up tomorrow? Is the spec difference worth the wait?

One moment, you're a noob; the next you're old furniture. If fairly lax criteria were applied (say at least one post, even if it's only a brief lackadaisacal or flippant comment per month -
but no no less! (more prolonged absences, for whatever reason, counting for nothing, whatever the original date of joining), just how many old-timers or veterans (inveterates even) does MetaFilter have? Who are these people? The interesting question being, of course, what made them (you) stay and, as it were, stay regular, despite all the alleged turmoil and changes we've been through?
P.S. This might be a silly question and I'm not painlessly aware of this.

How do you regard the time you spend on MetaFilter? Is it information time (
keeping up with the web; news-gathering); social time (
discussing; engaging with others); fun pure and simple; vegetative-time (
like watching indifferent TV); time-wasting when having a break from work...or what?
[

What do you say or do when someone out of the Blue - generally a fellow user who rarely comments and so is quite new to you - suddenly e-mails for the first time saying he or she will be in town, is interested in something you could help with and would like to have a drink with you?
It's clearly a friendly invitation but how do you politely decline, without having to lie and/or appearing to be a stuffed shirt?

I've never understood. Is
loser an all-American, classless and politically neutral term of derision, or is it predominantly used by people who tend to place a high value on the importance of winning and success, i.e. significantly more likely to admire capitalism and be critical of more cooperative and less competitive frames of mind ? As God Is My Cleaning Lady: Crypto-Fado For Bohemian Pagan Popsters.
They can't play their classical Fado guitars very well; they have a punky drummer and the Fado singer not only smiles pouts and shakes her hips, but actually seems to
enjoy herself! What's become of this country? Are they mad? Reckless, certainly. They call themselves
A Naifa and what they've done is taken a massive, ice-crunching Waring Pro blender to all the sacred potions, fruits and flavours of Portuguese traditional music and poured out a vulgar, shameless, disrespectful and utterly
delicious shambles of a
Pop cocktail. Heresy in old Lisbon? I nearly choked on my 30-year-old
aguardente velha, but then realized I was dancing merrily and had already spilt most of it anyway. [
Probably not fun for those unfamiliar with the Fado. QuickTime required.]

"Troll" may have a respectable lineage on the Web but, frankly, for some of us who joined later in the day, it seems like a quaint, medieval way of classifying anyone who's the least bit provocative, thought-provoking or even unorthodox. Recently, any forceful, strongly-worded attempt to spark discussion with a non-mainstream viewpoint, generally from the Left, has been lamely denounced as a "troll". Could it be time to give the
ye olde troll accusation a well-deserved rest? I hope so. The English language is one of the richest in the world and
troll sounds parochial, pimply, nerdish, cliquey, incestuous and, ultimately, meaningless.

MetaFilter is an American weblog. Europeans here, whether British or continental, are mere tokens. Perhaps we should all give up the international pretense. The truth is that MetaFilter, for those of us not lucky (or, to be frank, unluckly) enough to live in the U.S. or Canada, is fast becoming a domestic concern with an ever-decreasing regard for what happens in the (enormous) rest of the world. Whereas (the few remaining) Europeans here are curious about America, Americans here seem boringly and predictably obsessed with themselves. Is isolationism the growing trend on this board? It certainly seems so. Say the word, by the way, and you can have it all to yourselves, no hard feelings.
It is not a good idea but it's a stone's throw away...

The New European Football Champion Will Be Greece Or Portugal:
Sunday's Euro 2004 match is the first final ever between two national teams who've never made a final before, after dispatching the biggest, richest European powers like England, Germany, Spain, Italy and France. Meanwhile,
Maria Sharapova, a 17-year old Russian from Siberia has
won Wimbledon, defeating the mighty Serena Williams. Perhaps size and money, despite the multi-million contracts, still aren't everything in sport. Or does it depend on the sport? [

Are there any intelligent, cool celebrities (specially women, gays and intellectuals) who are conservative, quiet-spoken and traditionally-minded (and preferably non-religious) in a soft-spoken, non-libertarian, non-gung-ho, non-gun-totin' sense? Here's a
list and here's
another - but they both seem full of loud-mouthed, unthinking yobs or evangelists. Many thanks for any help with a list I've been asked to compile.

I Like To Watch:
A photographic record of cats transfixed; self-referential cats; cat Witnesses of Our Time; cat onlookers; cats gazing stupidly at infinity; lightly hypnotized brainpan-fried cats; feline couch potatoes; cats afflicted by the staring disease; briefly and easily amused cats; UN observer cats; guilty bystander cats. All in all, an extremely important investigation into the perennial question of how to hold a cat's attention. [

Can we - even if only briefly - discuss stuff on AskMe or not?
This Sopranos thread started off as a question but the discussion of last night's episode was inevitable and almost irresistible. My own opinion, fwiw, is that it would be nice if a little discussion was indeed allowed or, as has happened already, generously overlooked.
