Ask post: Hoising an M10 engine
Seconding gofargogo's recommendation of asking the 2002 FAQ. Those guys (and gals) can tell you anything you need to know and then some.

I'm also totally pumped to hear of other 02'ers on Metafilter.

Ask post: Last-minute wedding reception music - HELP!
Anything from Miles Davis's Kind of Blue would work for sure, especially "Blue in Green" and "Flamenco Sketches." Also, "My Ship" from Miles Ahead would do nicely, I think.

Jammyland. Their store is closed for the summer while they look for a new location, but if these guys don't have it, then nobody does.

Seconding mkultra; though you've already got the reservations, if you ever go again, try to eat at the bar. It's more fun, more intimate, and the service is better.

As far as food recommendations, if they're still serving the pumpkin (or was it sweet potato?) ravioli, by all means, order a plate.

Ask post: Help a mid 20's guy find some new punk music.
You said no 80's stuff, but what about the 90's? I'd recommend the following albums, all of which are on the screamy side, but totally awesome:

The Sleepytime Trio - Memory Minus
Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime
Four Hundred Years - Suture and other songs
Hoover - The Lurid Traversal of Route 7

There are several discographies out of 90's punk and hardcore bands that you might enjoy, including Swing Kids, Crimson... [more]

Ask post: worst broadway
If you're a Monty Python fan, I'd argue that Spamalot is about as bad as it gets. The "jazz-hands and loud asides" style of comedy that pervades Broadway is completely at odds with the subtle absurdity of the source material. When I went to see it, the audience was divided into two camps: the vast majority who'd never seen the movie and loved every second of what they were seeing, and a handful of sour nerds like myself.

Echoing everyone else's comments concerning the world's interest in your junk, I will add that if you're still concerned you should pick up a pair of Birdwell's.

Ask post: What to do and where to stay in Gainesville, Florida?
Will you have access to a rental car? If so, I'd recommend going for a long hike in Paynes Prarie (with real live bison!), maybe heading up to Palatka for a stroll through The Ravines, or taking a drive to St. Augustine to visit the historic downtown and the beautiful beaches. There's also a lot of great springsheads within easy driving distance of Gainesville, including Salt Springs and Ginnie Springs.... [more]

micayetoca is right; the Argentina bootleg has a version of Lark's Tongues in Aspic II. I'd bet that's the version used in the video you linked.

Faulkner's novella "Old Man" from If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem, features the great Mississippi Flood of 1927.

Also, Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God has a chapter on the Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928.

What were your LSAT scores and GPA? It'd be helpful to know what sorts of schools you'd realistically get in to... for instance, why isn't Harvard on your list?

Craftsmen is well known for this. The tools aren't the highest quality, but they're pretty rugged, and Sears has always been excellent about replacing them free of charge when they do break.

Ask post: My PT Cruiser will help us reach peak oil...
Adding a turbo for under $300 will be well-nigh impossible.

If I were you, I'd start out by getting an open-element air filter system, like this one from K&N. Though their horsepower gain claims are probably a little optimistic, you will see slightly better power and mileage by allowing your engine to breathe easier. It's also a fun and easy install and a good way to begin to familiarize yourself with your car.... [more]

Ask post: need NYC recomendations
If you're not interested in going all the way out to Brooklyn just for beer, I'd suggest you head over to the excellent Vol de Nuit on West 4th near 6th Avenue. There are a million amazing restaurants in that area too (including Babbo, which is absurdly good), so it's a much more convenient location than Spuyten Devil.

If he likes comedy, you could take him to the Asssscat 3000 show at the UCB Theater on Sunday night. It's absolutely hilarious, although it can get a little racy, so be forewarned. If you don't want to wait in line for the free later show, I'd suggest buying tickets to the earlier show pronto.

Ask post: Which boardshorts might fit me?
You're built like several of my friends and fellow former lifeguards. Classic Birdwells fit them perfectly.

The thing about Birdwells that you'll have to keep in mind when trying them on is: they're like a good pair of jeans. They may fit just so-so for the first month or two of wear, but by the 6 month mark, they're like an extension of your body.

Ask post: Please help me get into a top tier law school.
I got in to UCLA and got rejected by UC Berkeley just a few months ago.

I graduated from NYU in 2004 with a B.A. in English and a 3.5 GPA. I got a 172 (99th percentile) on the LSAT last June, had decent extra-curriculars and some excellent letters of recommendation, etc. I applied to both UCLA and UC Berkeley (my application fee to UCLA was waived by the school because of my LSAT score), and only got in to the former.

I'm a bit perplexed at... [more]

Ignore nearly all of the previous advice in this thread, it's all wrong.

The most sensible drink for you to be drinking is straight bourbon, something mid-shelf like Maker's Mark. You'll order it "neat," meaning no ice, just plain old wonderful bourbon.

- You said you wanted something that won't get you drunk. Bourbon is perfect for that. Why? Because, unlike every other drink suggested in this thread, bourbon will... [more]
