Gotta say, though, that the Chicago version SUCKS. It misses the majority of good stuff in lieu of the locations of parking garages (some of which are defunct or open to residents of buildings only) and fast food restaurants. Perhaps they did a great job on New York, which is not for me to judge, but the Chicago guide is just awful. I've lived in Chicago my entire life and there wasn't a single thing in there where I said "hmm, that's a good one" or "hmm, I didn't know about... [more]

Blind student earns M.D.
I graduated law school with a blind student. She was phenomenal, had the most insightful and witty comments in class. Everything took her three or four times as long as the rest of us - reading cases, assimilating texts, etc. I can't imagine the stress and time this MD went through!

Metrocard Vending Machine UI critique
shepd & risenc, I might be the only person in the world to think this, but I love those things. They're awesome. I used one when I was in college, about two years ago, at a Meijer in Mishawaka. I think they're awesome. Granted, the whole weight thing, sucks. But there is an option on the machine (at least the one I used) that you can use to turn off the audible warnings. The cashier in control of the lines also has the option to override the weight control on any machine in the grouping. I... [more]

There was a cool documentary on the History Channel about this a few months ago. I can't find it on their site, but it was very interesting - they talked about what the "junkyard" is used for today, as well as the history of some of the more famous (infamous) aircrafts located there. :)

Asbestosis
Well, yeah, to a certian extent, Asbestos is safe - everyone's right on this one - until it's disturbed. Then you have folks that are coming down with everything from asthma to cancer. My dad has mesothelioma, Asbestos-exposure cancer, and no one can figure out exactly how he got it - was it when his Asbestos-wrapped furnace was replaced in his childhood home in 1955? Was it when Asbestos tiles were removed from his office circa 1980? Or maybe it had nothing to do with Asbestos, rather, it came... [more]

I'm in the target demo, and I've been hit up by reps for each paper as I leave the train station, work, school, lunch, at random places on the sidewalks...and you want to know something? I've never taken a single one of their free papers - but I have seen people who do take them - a lot of them are pushing 50. How does that hit their demo?
The other thing that bothers me about this is that they're just pissing people off by forcing their papers down their throats. You... [more]

Thanks again!

Pardonyou? - Interesting thread - thanks for the link.
A few months ago, my dad was diagnosed with mesothelioma; cancer caused by asbestos exposure. He never worked with the stuff, we can't source it to save our lives - and the thing is, meso is 100% fatal.
One bad part of this (aside from me being 100% guaranteed of watching my dad die a long and painful death, eventually suffocating on his own lungs), is that it's not even his fault. And I... [more]

pardonyou?, yes, I agree with you - treating pre-asbestosis patients to huge amounts of money *is* something that's wrong. I do believe there has been at least some reform in that aspect, though. From what attorneys have told me, there's a "waiting list" for asbestos litigation, at least in federal court. An employee who wishes to claim for exposure to asbestos is placed on that list until he/she is actually diagnosed with meso. Then, their claim is pushed through. Like I said, that's... [more]

I work in the Sears Tower, and I'm going into work. I know a lot of people who work in my office and are taking tomorrow off. The Chicago Tribune did a great article on the Sears Tower after 9/11. If you don't work in Chicago's loop and you're looking for perspective on life in the Sears Tower, it's a great article to check out.
It's interesting to think of how much has changed. I got really freaked out (as did many of my coworkers) when the Air & Water Show... [more]

Has anyone discussed how Florida expects to enforce this law?

I kind of like the TV screens in the elevators. I work in the Sears Tower, and it takes FOREVER to get to my floor, so it's kind of nice to have some stock quotes or current events to read on the way. I mean, it's another way to advertise, sure, but it is entertaining. At least I think it is.

I really enjoyed my college Masses - the Eucharist was real bread. I mean, for goodness sake, Jesus did not eat those little wafers with crosses on them at the Last Supper. Real (unleavened) bread kind of made me feel more a part of the ceremony.
Back to the "crumb" problem. I was a sacristan assistant at my parish, and one of my duties was to prepare the unconsecrated hosts for the Eucharistic ceremony. There were TONS of crumbs in the little bags that the... [more]

That's huge. That totally would NOT fit on my driveway.
It would be cooler if it were smaller, and consisted of more than just the U.S.
Childhood memory:
We had to memorize all the states and then draw them on a piece of blank paper (this was maybe third grade?) - I know I learned more about what I didn't draw than what I did...this idea might kind of work the same way - make the kids draw stuff out - it's way better than memorizing... [more]

Well, I must say, I have some neighbors I'd like to sue.
In fact, they also play street hockey. I can't tell you how many dings and dents I have in my car that are "unexplained". These kids, although they're between 16-19, just have no respect for anyone. One time, my family had a party at our house, and we had a lot of cars parked in our cul-de-sac. The kids played their game, and we politely asked them if they could move it to another cul-de-sac down the street. They... [more]

The atmosphere around football is totally different at Notre Dame. I went to school in Notre Dame (at Saint Mary's), and it's really a cult, as I'm sure many of you know.
Notre Dame puts a lot of emphasis on the character of their employees. I think this is their way of saying that O'Leary did something wrong, and they don't want anyone who would consider lying on his resume influencing their students.
Then again, it could be the letters that... [more]
