MeFi post: Script-Doctorin' the TARDIS
Catherine Tate is rubbish and I have considered deleting most of the Dr. Who episodes from my DVR for this season. The Titanic "Christmas" episode that ended the last series was embarrassingly bad. Blink was awesome and more Moffat would be welcome.

I still don't get the love for Rose. Every episode reads like:

Dr: "Rose, don't touch anything. We need to be careful."
Rose: "DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO! It's... [more]

I have to give props to my eMac, which has been a rock-solid tank for four years and which has no idea that its replacement is in the mail.

My exact same situation. Stupid FedEx won't upgrade to tell me if the iMac has left Toledo.

MeFi post: Mmmmm. Maple Syrup in Pancakes.
What jessamyn said. Great post, ericb.

I enjoy watching the smoke rising from shacks up in the hills; spots one wouldn't think possible to reach. Unfortunately, from what my neighbors who sugar tell me, it was a crappy syrup year for them. Sometimes only half as much as the previous year. Which sucks for everyone.

A-yup. Cheese and maple syrup is about all we got up these parts.

Unless you count ice cream, granola and trail mix, (vegan) cookies, salsa & salad dressing, hot sauces, bakeries, flour, coffee, coffee roasters, chocolates, bath products, outdoor gear (for dogs too!), wine, bedding/linens, hooked rugs, publishing companies, dog cookies, chutneys, tea, soap, a culinary school, potato chips, pasta; pies, plus lots of other foods.... MeFi post: "This is the third time; I was a player here too."
I agree with criticalbill as far as how much influence a football manager has, and disagree that a baseball manager's "got only a relatively minor influence". Baseball managers make lots of decisions (similar to football managers) such as positioning players in the field, setting the lineup, deciding when a pitcher needs to be changed, etc, etc.

This is also (surprisingly quietly) being discussed on SportsFilter.... [more]

We were driving back to London from Cambridge yesterday when the BBC radio announcer mentioned the NORAD thing. However, he didn't understand what 2 a.m. MTN meant and told the listening children to tune in to follow Father Christmas ... at what would be 9 a.m. ... Christmas Day.

MeFi post: Last FM sold
Most of the features I find useful (and use) on last.fm could easily be added to the features of iTunes (are you listening Steve) or a third party plugin. I like to see my own data and be able to export a snippet of code to a website showing recent tracks. For all I know these things already exist elsewhere already I just haven't stumbled upon them.

Heck, I still use the old (unsupported) audioscrobbler plugin because most of my listening is done on my iPod and not... [more]

flapjax: I think you may be the one confusing atheism with anti-religion (or maybe anti-proselytizing is more accurate).

MeFi post: Freedom of Sights and Sounds
I am not sure anyone visited the site before commenting, but that's your right too. The EFF (among others) are partners with this group. Other partners include the Consumer Electronics Association who believe that the RIAA, et al, are trying to suppress innovation in consumer electronics.

Personally, I think the more people fighting for artist and consumer rights the better, but that's just me.

As for labeling this a weak post? We can't all... [more]

MeFi post: Maryland joins the ranks of states attempting to thwart the electoral college.
The plan would only go into action if enough states representing a majority [270 votes] of the nation's 538 electoral votes adopt it, making it unlikely that it would be in effect by the 2008 presidential election. However, Maryland joins a growing number of states [Arkansas is the most recent] moving to circumvent a Constitutional amendment. Supporters of the reform have turned to the interstate compact, saying it would be constitutional because agreements between states already exists. The... [more]

This is called early voting, and most states have it already.

The only problem I have early voting is that I trust the U.S. Postal System less than I trust Dieblod.
posted to MetaFilter by terrapin at 11:46 AM on March 30, 2007
Yes, I was confusing things, because I have not missed walking into a polling place in the 22 years I have been voting... but it was also a joke. I live in Vermont. Some towns here use Diebold, but my town still uses paper and pencil.

I still think election day should be a national holiday.

MeFi post: What, no Styx?!
This comment alone makes me like you more than I did before jonmc. To be brutally honest, the hyperbole you employ in some of your music posts and comments (here and on MeCha) had rubbed me the wrong way in the past. Things like "this is the best guitar solo in the history of all rock-n-roll!" (I am paraphrasing) would make me cringe. But that comment makes everything better :)

I love that song, nofundy. Saw them both perform it live at the Santa Barbara bowl the night Jackson Browne debuted his I'm Alive CD. Had burritos with all three of them later than night and got stoned with Jackson's personal assistant on a hill behind the stage. Shortly after smoking up, I felt a hand on my shoulder and heard someone whisper near my ear "this is fuckin' great" and I turned to see it was John Prine. I think I babbled "umm, yeah.... [more]

MeFi post: QuIET is the New Loud
Also, this has nothing to do with audio, sound and video.

I first read about this in Electronic Musician and they seem to think it does have audio applications. The article (not online) states that while other researchers have succeeded in attaching two leads to such molecules, the UA team expects three-lead devices to be "just around the corner." And that three-lead devices will allow one lead to act as a valve for current flowing between... [more]
