Memorial fund?
Brooke's obit was in today's Valley News, but they are behind on the web site. I only glanced at the obit this morning and so didn't see if the family had designated a charity or cause for donations yet.

I checked the obituary and it lists the Molly Bish Foundation as the place the family requests people send donations if they are inclined.

Facts do not respect majority opinion.
While the OP did ask how do "you" pronounce a word, opening up the can of worms, nthdegx is correct that one shouldn't guess. There are plenty of people with expertise in the topic (read: languagehat) who can give an answer without resorting to giving a Steven C. Den Beste guess. As nthdegx points out this is an issue that occurs in many other AskMe threads, and this is just the latest example.
I think Languagehat's answer is authoritative enough... [more]

I know I labeled this a central Vermont meetup, but we'd LOVE to see other northern New Englanders who are interested in a visit.

People are still welcome to offer up alternate plan ideas, but I wanted to let everyone know that I spoke with a manager at Peavine's and they said they shouldn't have any problem accommodating us that night at the time suggested.

Eideteker, you are welcome at ours as well, but jessamyn is closer to the pub. Plus our road is rutty and not very motorcycle friendly. I'll look for the air mattress just in case.

Yeah, I got my answer, but fuck you.
It would be nice if the asker either marked a comment as best answer or posted what solved their problem because that is helpful to others who may have the same, or similar, question.
However, since it is impossible to require this sort of follow-up it is best not to expect it. Hopefully if one has a similar question there are at least enough leads in the comments to help one find their answer.

If this is about the cat and tulip question, the poster looks to be very new and only using AskMe. So probably not someone who thinks of such things as "oh, hai, thx, the cat's fine." I'd MeMail them but I doubt the poster is even aware of the feature... plus the user's name is Awkward Philip, so cut him some slack ;)

Should or shouldn't
Hey remember how we had a redesign contest and then we were going to implement the winning design and then one of the designs was declared the winning design?
Yup. quonsar remembers too... like a pissing elephant.

I come here not to praise favorites but to bury them
I hate the favorites system and think it rewards bad behavior. If they were truly meant to keep track of things, they would be invisible to everyone but the person logged in. If one wishes to compare it to the flag system, how about making the flag system visible? Then people can not only track how funny they think they are, but they can then also pat themselves on the back for getting more flags than others too. Yay!

Oh well. languagehat has ruled. I guess the rest of the community should just go home and suck it up as he so eloquently put it.
Nothing to see here, people. Your opinion doesn't matter.
Time to close the thread.

Boooooooooobs.
Heck even if I wear baggy clothes people find it appropriate to talk about my ass even in MeTa. Which is sort of friendly-jokey I guess, but sort of not, you know?
I had no clue, and wish I had been told some other way than being called out in this thread (and alerted by someone who reads this site more than I). I have done what I can to correct this. I am very sorry, jessamyn.

BTW, I didn't realize that I had gone too far by taking/posting/linking to the photo I posted a few comments up, and so I have removed it. The photo was taken and posted in October, and it was never called to my attention that it was offensive to the subject (jessamyn).
I should have known better, but it never made it to my brain. I wish I had been told in person, via email, IM, etc. that it was offensive to jessamyn. I would have liked to been told somewhere other... [more]

wrecking the weekend record
The number of MeTa posts (as well as essentially every other kind of site activity) has been rising with time.
I'm sorry, but based on your track record with misinformation in AskMe, Steven C. Den Beste, we'll need citations. Oh and witnessing by a notary, please. Thanks.

Well, different people use the site differently. I read the various sections of the site via RSS reader and look for links that interest me (blue) or questions that I may be able to help with on AskMe (via tag RSS). I couldn't give a rat's ass as to how popular a particular thread is. I understand that some folks think that the site is about the discussion of said links, and that is fine. If that is the case than perhaps using the site and not a reader is a better solution to what I perceive... [more]

Fallout from the Givewell affair
I am *way* behind on this givewell event, but on the off-chance there is someone who may find this information useful: The Urban Institute has a policy center named the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy. And one of their projects is the National Center for Charitable Statistics, which is the "national clearinghouse of data on the nonprofit sector in the United States.... [more]
