Ask post: Can I write to a div using Perl, or otherwise solve my form submission problem?
What about just adding the form to the thank you page? You should have the form data available to you at that point, so you could pre-populate the values.

If you're handy with AJAX (and you'll have to be if you have you have your heart set on "without reloading if possible"), you could strip out all the html from the thanks/error pages except the actual message part. Then have the form make the ajax call and update a (previously empty) div with the returned... [more]

Ask post: How to split the baby
My wife breastfed so she took all the feedings, which early on means all the 'wakings', but once the baby's stomach grew a bit my wife and I settled on this algorithm: I'd take all the non-feeding-time wake-ups until midnight and every other one after midnight; she'd take alternate wakings after midnight (and, of course, all the feed time wake-ups). I didn't have to get up until 7am though.

Mostly, like pearlybob said and Ostara, flexibility and the baby is boss. And... [more]

I agree somewhat with mkultra. Will be people able to at least choose a new nick if they don't like the one assigned to them?

For the assigned name, what about taking their name and replacing all the vowels with a different randomly chosen one? Love, dunastaperstir

Ask post: Taps
I played Taps as a kid in the 70s in DC suburbs. Also called it 21. Generally, there wouldn't just be two players, though....there was one shooter and all the other kids (2 or 3) would try for taps.
posted to Ask Metafilter by danOstuporStar at 2:54 PM on May 16, 2008
Thinking back...there was no "three tries to score a basket this way". You could try an tap until the ball hit the ground at which point it became like regular one-on-one(-on-one-etc) basketball. Whoever scored a basket first went to the free throw line. I think it was 3 points for a tap, 2 for one-on-one and 1 for a free throw.

If you were at the line and had 20 points and missed, there was a major penalty...like losing all your points or something.... [more]

Ask post: Disagreement with co-web developer about speed difference of height and width specified in image tags as opposed to in the css
Nthing that setting the attributes in CSS vs. html is likely trivial in terms of speed (probably not even worth profiling) and that you should have a goal of doing both eventually and that you should really physically resize the thumbnails (and, perhaps, that I'd be interested if someone has a definitive answer to the speed question).

Adding that, for future projects at least, I think either or your co-developer need to put in charge enough that one of you can say 'this... [more]

Ask post: WYSIWY.... - wait, you want what?
But I think what you actually want is a CMS, even though you say it isn't.

Yeah, that. It seems to me like what you don't want is a whiz-bang CMS with a database backend but, instead, a simple interface to editing static html files using a WYSISYG. That's still a CMS in my book.

In that case, I still think FCKeditor/TinyMCE/etc is what you need. There's 13 pages of various projects that use FCKeditor here, but if you don't... [more]

Ask post: Help! Do the modified push ups I saw in a movie work?
Hobbes mentions the Upward-Facing Dog position, which is often part of Sun Saluatations. To turn the hindu-pushups into more of lower-body workout, practice doing the downdog-plank-chaturanga-updog sequence slowly (spend some time holding in each position) and really concentrate on squeezing your butt as you move from chaturanga to updog. Definitely a glute-toner if you do it right.... [more]

Ask post: One extra day for the most special park in the South West?
We (wife, 2 boys under 10, myself) did Vegas-Zion-GrandCanyon over the last Christmas holidays and, honestly, Red Rock Canyon was the best time we had. Easy going trails and, I dunno, the "wow" just feels a little closer to you. It was perfect for kids, but it sounds like you're a couple. Red Rock also has a few petroglyphs, which are disappointing in terms of size and clarity but, again, you could go right up to them and touch them. I do think you should give Red Rock a 1/2 day in... If you guys stay together, when you're 52 you'll be banging an 80 year old. Whereas he was banging 24 year old when he was 52. This fact shouldn't have much effect short-term, but be prepared to deal any resentment that you may feel a decade or two from now.

Untrue. I would give the same weight as I gave to the professor to the opinions of the other hiring committee members, if we had any indication of how they reached their conclusions regarding who to call back. Ask post: I want to build a house: 1,500 sq.ft., passive solar features, $100,000 - possible?
Probably depends in part where you're building it, both in terms of latitude and southern exposure.

Make that definitely. Where geographically and environmentally (city/rural/etc).

Just a data point:

About 3 years ago, I spent about $100k on a 900 sq ft addition in the Washington DC area made from SIPs. I was my own general contractor, but didn't do much labor myself. No passive solar, but top-of-line windows/doors and a solar hot water system...so maybe not really at all what you're looking for (esp if your building in an area where alternative materials are a good option), but maybe this will help you think of costs you've overlooked. Ask post: Recommended Form Upload Component?
So just to be clear...You need to accept files via http (using a multi-part webform) and then the webserver needs to FTP the files to a remote (from the webserver's perspective) FTP server. Is that an accurate description of the problem?

Also, the webserver does or does not have php's ftp functions enabled?

well considering the first google hit for Poll_It is a security bug, it looks like SimplePoll is better choice of the two.

it looks like the main install procedures are 1) creating the database tables and 2) modifying some variables in the config file. is one of these steps in particular where you're having problems, or do you not know where to start?

the simplePoll zip file is here if anybody is looking for it.

you should be able to use the "execute SQL" tool to create the tables. just paste the contents of the sql.txt file into the text area of the tool. (this is assuming your host has already created a database for you.)

i sent you an email with IM info if that would help.
