Indiana Jones logo in Gimp

I have the Gimp, I have the fonts, I have the desire, but what I don't have is a clue as to recreating the Indiana Jones logo style.

Play a WMV on a Mac

I've got a Mac G4 running 10.4.11 and I've been experiencing worsening problems playing WMV files. I realize this is a kludge to begin with, but things are getting weird...

Self-hosted LiveJournal replacement? I would like to have my own journal displayed on my own site and besides some usual requirements, I have one or two that seem to be difficult to satisfy.

Simple Linux backup solution?

Is there such a thing as a simple unattended backup solution for a Linux box? I'm using Bacula right now but it's total overkill for my situation.

Looking for a WWII F4F to photograph

I am looking to photograph a WWII Grumman F4F "Wildcat" as a present for my dad. While there is a local airshow in Geneseo, NY each summer, they have not had a F4F. Does anyone know of an airshow this summer within a days drive of Rochester, NY? A museum would also be okay, though it might be more difficult to get good photos.

Sending mail from Linux to Exchange

I have a Linux box (Ubuntu Edgy) that I would like to be able to send mail to an Exchange server. It also needs to send/receive locally. Which MTA will actually allow me to do this and are directions for configuring it available? I've found lots of vague references but very little "program X will do this and here's how" kind of stuff.

Mac boot problem

Strange Mac problem: it won't boot from certain CDs or from the hard drive. Norton Utilities and DiskWarrior both say the hard drive is okay. I'm stumped. Older G3 beige minitower, OS X 10.3.

Old patent search

I'm looking for an old (pre-1900) patent and the USPTO site only allows patent number and classification searches for pre-1975 patents.

Web-based tutorial development

Are there any free/open source tools available to create web-based (HTML) tutorials that don't require server installation? I've played with IBM's Toot-o-matic in the past but it doesn't work with Java 1.5 and doesn't seem to be actively supported.

Automated Bluetooth file transfers

Is there anyway to automate Bluetooth file transfers on Windows SP2 using the Microsoft Bluetooth software? (This is a followup of sorts to a previous query of mine.)

Windows Bluetooth HotSync problem

I've been using Bluetooth to HotSync my Palm Zire 72 with my Windows XP machine. Then I was "upgraded" to SP2, now HotSync times out everytime. Am I simply SOL?

Inspired by this thread as well as numerous medical and legal questions on AskMe I was wondering if there couldn't be some way of encouraging our lawyers/doctors/etc. to participate in discussions in their field. I know there's a hesitancy to provide specific details due to liability issues but some threads get bogged down in arguments over misunderstandings. Any thoughts on how this could be done or whether it's even a good idea?

Polyphonic Spree: cult or not?

Okay, what's up the Polyphonic Spree? Are they a cult or what? Interestingly, this same question came up on Ask Yahoo! and comes up as the fourth link on a Google search, so I know I'm not the only one who's wondered. [band link is heavy with Flash]

I noticed an AskMe thread with two "Best Answers". Is the ability to mark more than one answer as "best" intentional, or is this a bug? I'm sure there are going to be cases of ties, so perhaps this isn't a bad idea.

Another partially remembered childhood story...

Another partially remembered childhood story question. Does anyone recall a short story with a female narrator that revolves around her using a silver pencil to write and thereby deal with a debilitating illness? I seem to also recall something about "blue roses", but I'm not sure if that's in the story or just mixed in with it in my memories. Thanks.

For the boys overseas

V-Disc Records , a government-created music company, made 78's full of music, stories and announcements and sent them overseas to US servicemen from 1943-1949. They were never made available in record stores and, since the American Federation of Musicians was on strike at the time, they were the only recordings being made. All of the top stars of the day made them, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and more. After the program ended in 1949, the government, following an AFM request that the records not be used for commercial purposes, destroyed the original masters. Luckily the Library of Congress has a complete set of V-Discs and the National Archives saved some of the metal stampers.

I have a Palm V running OS 3.3. It works fine except for one annoying problem that I cannot for the life of me solve or find out anything about: the HotSync cradle button always invokes HotSync by Infrared, no matter what the setting. Has anyone heard of this before, and if so, is there any fixing it? [mi]

Does anyone know of a site that has sound recordings (either for sale or download) of early American mandolin orchestras (early 20th century)? I've been looking at the Smithsonian and Library of Congress but haven't found much. I'm assuming that given the time period they would mostly have been recorded on wax cylinders.

It's really, really, really bad

The World's Worst Website? Well, yes, it is really bad, but is it the worst? More importantly, isn't there a better way to educate budding web designers? How about sites that encourage, with examples of what to do, rather than the opposite? [via The Red Ferret Journal] [SFW, annoying MIDI]

I've got a journal in LiveJournal that I want to download to my home computer prior to deleting. The tool on the LiveJournal site will do this, but only one month at a time. Is there any tool that can handle more than a single month? I'd prefer the XML format, since I might want to do something with them at a later date.

I have an oak tilt/swivel chair that also has height adjustment. The height adjust mechanism is broken: the ring that's supposed to revolve and move the central post up and down has damaged threads. The store where I bought this many years ago is no longer in business. I'm not getting a lot of value out of Google searches, probably because I don't know what the parts are called. Any places that sell chair parts and/or diagrams where I can see the parts named?

Who wouldn't vote for free beer?

Register to vote and you can get free beer! What better way to reach that vast pool of unregistered twenty-one year-olds than offering them something they actually want? Brought to you by the Democrats, of course. But not without some controversy (from health experts, not Republicans), even though they only get two 2-ounce glasses.

Any other examples of inventive voter registration drives out there?

Fearsome Communications Commission

Fear of the FCC forces a college radio station to go to an all-recorded format. That's right, no more live DJ's. All shows are to be taped and then reviewed by station management prior to broadcast. Not because the FCC has fined the station, but because they might.

Mac System 6

Remember Mac System 6? If you do, then P.dro Classicâ„¢ is for you. Relive the glory days of 1 bit-per-pixel porn (it's almost life-like if you squint) and Pong-like games with the mouse! Hey, it's Friday and this is Flash. For me, it's the Startup Sound that makes this.

It's Krazy! (glue)

Serendipity saves lives and holds a lot of things together. Harry Coover, an Eastman chemist, was trying to develop a plastic for gunsights. Instead he discovered cyanoacrylates otherwise known as Superglue. It's been sticking things and people together since 1952. Harry is being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio.

I've got a Mac with OS X 10.2.8 that used to run OS 9. I have this one job I do for a friend that required me to use Print2Pict with this one app in order to generate a PICT file that I could then cut pieces out of. Just this week, the app (Finale Notepad) was updated to run on OS X. I still need the ability to generate an editable PICT file, but Print2Pict is not available. Is there anything equivalent to Print2Pict for OS X?

Johnny Hart stirs up more controversy

Johnny Hart stirs up more controversy, this time among the Asian community. Back in November it was the Muslims. How does he manage to stay on the comics page? At what point is a mainstream comic no longer acceptable to the mainstream?

Skeletons in the closet

Police find skeleton in Oddfellows lodge. Turns out, they'd already found it, 6 years before (your guess is as good as mine why no one did anything then). Even more interesting, it's not the only one that's been found and subsequently investigated by the police around the country. Makes you wonder about those Oddfellows.

Webloggers feud

Mark Pilgrim and Dave Winer are fighting, again. It started over a remark Dave made about various blogging services. Mark turned around and created a bot that reads Dave's RSS feed every 5 minutes and spits out the text, annotated to show what's been added/deleted/changed since the last time it ran. Dave's claiming copyright infringement, Mark's claiming fair use. Okay MeFi folks, which side are you on, and why?

Reply To All button considered harmful An employee (called a manager in the headline but a millwright in the article) was fired from Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY when he replied to an email announcing "National Coming Out Day" (hint: he wasn't in favor). But in addition to the sender, his message went to about 1000 other employees. Kodak says he was terminated when he refused to admit that sending it to all those people was wrong, not for it's content. Is this Political Correctness run amok or justifiable?
