Moniker La Winski
I college I worked in the dining hall with a Melody Bell. I hope that if she ever got married she didn't take her husband's last name.

The Balcony Is Closed. (For Good.)
This actually made me cry, dammit. I've gotten to the age where all the things of my youth, that I thought were eternal, are going out of their way to remind they're not. It's not comforting.

Old dangerous playground equipment.
We used to wax the slide at my local playground using the insides of the waxed paper cups they sold soda in at the refreshment stand. We used to just fly off the end of the thing! Of course, this being the 60s, there was just dirt at the end of it. Good times.

In addition to the slide, we also had something vaguely like this but more like a bigger "witch's hat". You sat on the outside and faced in and the thing would revolve at the same time it tilted back and forth. The "big kids" would spin us around as fast as they could get it to go and we would rock it so that it crash into the center pole. Surrounding that center pole was a ring of wood that absorbed some of the shock of hitting the pole. Of course, it eventually got cut to... [more]

Packing a Punch
I prefer my appetizers on the docile side, myself. I'm pretty sure nachos have never punched a hole in anything.

Freedom Flies
I posted a link to the Washington Times article on this topic to my own weblog. I received a comment from a John Verrico, who claims to be the DHS Science &Technology Directorate spokesman saying this is not at all true, that the "hypothetical use of the bracelet would have been for transporting already apprehended prisoners and detainees at prisons and border patrol facilities, and DHS was looking to see if there were potential air travel applications for apprehended suspects."... Train in Vain
When I was in school I took the Amtrak from here in Rochester (former home of a magnificent NY Central station) to Grand Central Station in NYC. It was always around a 9-10 hour trip, thanks to frequent stops and freight trains. But this was in the mid-70s when the speed limit was 55 and driving took about 8 hours so it didn't seem so bad. Since then speed limits have changed and more interstates were built so you can make the same trip by car from here in under 6 hours today. Since I had to... [more]

America's Pastime
And we wonder why kids today stay indoors all the time and don't seem to be interested in the outdoors or their communities.

Bozo the Clown dead at 83
I was on the NYC (WPIX Channel 11) Bozo show in the early 1960s. It was sponsored by Bosco chocolate syrup and they used to give some of the kids chocolate milk made with Bosco. I, of course, wasn't one of those lucky kids. It's the only part of the show I remember clearly.
Needless to say, my feelings about Bozo are mixed.

The FPP title is "title"? Is that intended as postmodern irony?
I think it has a nice Repo Man feel to it.

...if waterboarding does not constitute torture, then there is no such thing as torture.
While I agree that in most ways Hitchens is a scumbag, I will give him some credit for agreeing to be tortured and publishing an article admitting he was wrong.
Technically, Hitchens agreed to waterboarding not torture, on the dubious assumption that it is merely unpleasant. So, -50 pts. for discovering what ordinary, non-pundits have known since day 1 (or WWII, if your point of view allows).

"If you can't make it good, at least make it look good."
Bill's memo must have bothered a lot of Microsoft people but it didn't really result in any change, did it? Just because he was the head man didn't mean he was actually involved in any real decisions at the tactical level. No wonder he's unhappy with the design.
Still, he's a lot more savvy than Ballmer could ever be. That doesn't bode well for the future.

Heller v. D.C. Decided
Maybe the Supreme Court should have limits to the amount of time any judge could serve or perhaps select judges for any particular case from a pool. It would make it harder for any president to pack the court with judges who adhere to their views and perhaps even lower their case load since you are no longer assured of how the court will rule.

bunnytricks beat me to it: That looks an awful lot like a Garbage Plate, made famous by Nick Tahou's
As a Rochester resident, I can confirm the wonder that is the Nick Tahou's Garbage Plate. I've even had them during the day and while sober, but I'm definitely in the minority as far as that goes. Sadly, due to a crime problem (even though it's across the street from the 911 center), Nick's closes early now. Mark's on Monroe Avenue is open 24 hours,... [more]

An Affair to Remember
This article pretty much tells you everything that wrong with our health care system in general and our treatment of the elderly in particular. Our treatment of the elderly today isn't all that different from how those with TB were treated in the first half of the twentieth century. Old age is a disease we must somehow protect the general population from so pack them away like old clothes and never look at them again. But we forget those that we sequester away are human beings with lives and... [more]
