I've got a Mac G4 running 10.4.11 and I've been experiencing worsening problems playing WMV files. I realize this is a kludge to begin with, but things are getting weird...

Self-hosted LiveJournal replacement? I would like to have my own journal displayed on my own site and besides some usual requirements, I have one or two that seem to be difficult to satisfy.

Is there such a thing as a simple unattended backup solution for a Linux box? I'm using Bacula right now but it's total overkill for my situation.

I am looking to photograph a WWII Grumman F4F "Wildcat" as a present for my dad. While there is a local airshow in Geneseo, NY each summer, they have not had a F4F. Does anyone know of an airshow this summer within a days drive of Rochester, NY? A museum would also be okay, though it might be more difficult to get good photos.

I have a Linux box (Ubuntu Edgy) that I would like to be able to send mail to an Exchange server. It also needs to send/receive locally. Which MTA will actually allow me to do this and are directions for configuring it available? I've found lots of vague references but very little "program X will do this and here's how" kind of stuff.

Strange Mac problem: it won't boot from certain CDs or from the hard drive. Norton Utilities and DiskWarrior both say the hard drive is okay. I'm stumped. Older G3 beige minitower, OS X 10.3.

I'm looking for an old (pre-1900) patent and the USPTO site only allows patent number and classification searches for pre-1975 patents.

Are there any free/open source tools available to create web-based (HTML) tutorials that don't require server installation? I've played with IBM's Toot-o-matic in the past but it doesn't work with Java 1.5 and doesn't seem to be actively supported.

Is there anyway to automate Bluetooth file transfers on Windows SP2 using the Microsoft Bluetooth software? (This is a followup of sorts to
a previous query of mine.)

I've been using Bluetooth to HotSync my Palm Zire 72 with my Windows XP machine. Then I was "upgraded" to SP2, now HotSync times out everytime. Am I simply SOL?

I'm traveling to Brazil in October and I'd like to have a useable cell phone when I'm there. What's my best option?

I'm looking for a banana phone. Not the song, thanks, but a real, honest-to-goodness banana-shaped phone.

I have the opportunity to buy an older Kodak DCS digital SLR (a 330) but I'm concerned about getting images out of it.

Okay, what's up the
Polyphonic Spree? Are they a cult or what? Interestingly, this same question came up on
Ask Yahoo! and comes up as the fourth link on a Google search, so I know I'm not the only one who's wondered. [band link is heavy with Flash]

Another partially remembered childhood story question. Does anyone recall a short story with a female narrator that revolves around her using a silver pencil to write and thereby deal with a debilitating illness? I seem to also recall something about "blue roses", but I'm not sure if that's in the story or just mixed in with it in my memories. Thanks.

Is there any way to successfully sync Entourage v.X with a Palm Zire 72? Microsoft's conduit doesn't support the "new" Palm apps and QueueSync produces wildly varying (and incorrect) results. [mi]

I am curious, blue. Or rather, I'm curious about something on the Blue,
Virtual Bartender. How are toys like that and Subservient Chicken implemented?

Forgive me, but I want
Bananaphone as my cell phone ringtone. I have it in MP3 format but my LG Vx4400 can't play them. I found a .qcp version, but the volume is way too soft for usefulness. How can I make it louder? [more inside]

I have a Palm V running OS 3.3. It works fine except for one annoying problem that I cannot for the life of me solve or find out anything about: the HotSync cradle button
always invokes HotSync by Infrared, no matter what the setting. Has anyone heard of this before, and if so, is there any fixing it? [mi]

Does anyone know of a site that has sound recordings (either for sale or download) of early American mandolin orchestras (early 20th century)? I've been looking at the Smithsonian and Library of Congress but haven't found much. I'm assuming that given the time period they would mostly have been recorded on wax cylinders.

I've got a journal in LiveJournal that I want to download to my home computer prior to deleting. The tool on the LiveJournal site will do this, but only one month at a time. Is there any tool that can handle more than a single month? I'd prefer the XML format, since I might want to do something with them at a later date.

[PhysicsFilter] This has been troubling me for a while and the answers I've gotten haven't satisfied me. Nothing travels faster than the speed of light for all intents and purposes, information included. I think I have a way around that, but I've been told it won't work. [More inside]

I have an oak tilt/swivel chair that also has height adjustment. The height adjust mechanism is broken: the ring that's supposed to revolve and move the central post up and down has damaged threads. The store where I bought this many years ago is no longer in business. I'm not getting a lot of value out of Google searches, probably because I don't know what the parts are called. Any places that sell chair parts and/or diagrams where I can see the parts named?

I've got a Mac with OS X 10.2.8 that used to run OS 9. I have this one job I do for a friend that required me to use Print2Pict with this one app in order to generate a PICT file that I could then cut pieces out of. Just this week, the app (Finale Notepad) was updated to run on OS X. I still need the ability to generate an editable PICT file, but Print2Pict is not available. Is there anything equivalent to Print2Pict for OS X?

Can anyone recommend a tube (valve) amplifier kit in the ~ $500 (US) range? I was going to buy one of the Passion Audio Kit i11 amps but the company that offered them, Rotac in Quebec, quit selling them April 1st.
