A new bag (of tricks)
CAnneDC: would you mind explaining how you taught him all that? My dog will play dead with a pointed finger, which isn't hard to teach, you just manually roll him over and reward him, but I'm not sure how I'd get him to do all that?

Heading out in twos.
For sportbikes: hang on tight with one arm, pressing you up against their back, the other hand resting on the tank, such that you can keep yourself from moving forward. The body arm keeps you from falling off the back, and the gastank arm keeps you from giving the rider _too_ much weight to hold back while he's honkin' on the binders (also helps for male package crushing against the tank). From there, just become an extension of his back, no slack between the two of you at all, keep pressed... [more]

recover deleted files on old DOS system
I ran across a number of mentions of it not working, so I just assumed that was it. I know it's _supposed_ to, but I read that it didn't. When I stuck it in my XP machine, a small partition showed up with a few random files, no way to access the dos stuff.

I tried it in a win98 machine and got the same result as in XP. it's 540mb, 77mb used (must have confused it with something - or one of the file recovery programs showed 40mb or something), and the files that show up are:
command.com
dblspace.000
dblspace.bin
dblspace.ini
file0001.chk 2, 3
io.sys
msdos.sys
the file0001.chk has a reference to c:\windows\temp in it, so I'm guessing this is... [more]

another note.. I try to boot from it on my machine - non-system disk. I put it back in the old box and it boots up just fine.
Thanx for the compressed tip.. I'll see what I can do from here...

I tried dblspace /list and is in fact a compressed C drive, with D - G available for dblspace, and then J as the rest of the disk.
Putting the drive in it's own computer, and using a dos boot disk, I get the files listed above (command.com, etc.), not the compressed drive.
Putting the disk in my computer, trying to use any sort of boot disk (hirens 9.4) it hangs. Unplug the hard-drive, and it starts right away. Disk-Image floppy boot, also... [more]

What's Taking So Long in There?
grumblebee - I bet you maximize that 'wasted' elevator time too, untying shoelaces, getting house keys ready, unbuttoning jackets, anything that you'd end up having to do once you get off. How does everyone else in the world avoid thinking of these things??

Tuxedo t-shirt in Seattle?
Hot Topic had girls tees, but not guys.. Spencer's had them, but only in large and Redlight doesn't carry them anymore apparently. I'll try the display and costume shop, thanx! if not, I'll just order online and wear it some other time.

What to charge for a 3 minute throwaway web edit?
This is why I don't run my own business.. I couldn't sleep at night charging $100 for removing a name from a contact list. I'm not saying it's unfair or anything, just that I could never do it. And seconding that an invoice can be a simple notepad printout stating how much they owe you, it's just a paper record, it doesn't need to be anything fancy.

You can also use one of those plugs that converts from three prongs in to two prongs out to the wall (if you need to have it plugged in)

Font for 'Fin' at end of movie?
I'm definitely thinking along the lines of the Aristocrat LET, cursive. I can't remember a single specific movie I've seen it in either which doesn't help.

Best recent skateboarding video?
I think that's the same dog from an old Powell video (something Domain?) where the dog steals Lance's board and skates away.. unless there's more than one skateboarding bulldog out there, although that would make Tyson pretty old...
I'll look for 'bag of suck', I didn't think they'd have videos of the year, that would've been a good place to start. thanx.

No such thing as a free dog
insurance for my dog would be around $50/month, I pay everything, then at the end of the year they reimburse you everything except the first $300 as a deductable. I found it made more sense to put $50/month into a 'dog fund' (that's $600/yr) and I figure I'll come out on top in the end. Not what you asked, but just an idea.

Learning to eat better/more
Wow, we're almost identical, except I'm much worse. But still, very similar patterns in what we eat/don't eat. I'm 32, and I've gotten much more adventurous in the last few years which has worked out rather well for me. I find there's very small 'windows of opportunity' where I'll feel adventurous and may try something otherwise, forget it, don't even bother trying to get me to try it. So now when I sense one of these I make sure to try something. In your defense, my mother claimed my whole... [more]

How "real" is "Planet Earth"?
on the dvd (at least the chinese one i borrowed from a friend), it has Attenborough, and every segment is followed by a 'making of' segment. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Russian film recommendations
Come and See is supposed to be awesome.. haven't seen it.
These are WAY out of your time range, but someone has to mention Brilliantovaya ruka (Diamond Arm) 1968, and Ivan Vasilevich menyaet professiyu (ivan vasilevich: back to the future) 1973. (both goofy comedies)
You'll have a hard time finding a russian that hasn't seen these many many times, and they're often quoted in regular conversation (so I hear).

recording/playing a tv show
I always tell people to just buy a div-x capable DVD player. They are so cheap now ($50 CDN), and make life so much easier if you intend on watching a downloaded video on the tv more than say 5 times in your life. But that's just me.

How to add computer to LAN with access to one workstation?
The monitor is needed because the computer is used as a floppy emulator for loading files on to a CNC machine. They want a 'one-way' connection where they can send files to it, but nothing else.
I thought of the 'misconfiguring' idea, but being a 98 box I don't like the idea of it being connected directly to the LAN.
Can I put the two computers behind the extra router I have and it only route one of the ips to the regular LAN (maybe simply put the win2000 in the DMZ)? I... [more]

Why do my ice cubes grow arms?
I've been meaning to post this same question for a while, as I often get ice-cube stalagmites.
from the article:
That's how it happens and, as the reader's image shows, you can build big spikes of a few centimetres in your own freezer or backyard. However, it is essential to use distilled water or snow melt with no impurities to allow for uniform freezing.
Does this mean I have tap-water with less impurities then usual?

you can get a pager alarm for it if you'll be close enough to it (not sure about the range). Mine had me running out of the movie theater when a bus went by... Could never get the sensitivity right, so I just stopped using it. They might be better now though. Other than that, disc locks and other non-lock-to-something only discourage the casual thief, and I dont think there's many of those. Usually it's the 'back of the truck' deal which there's not a hell of a lot you can do about. Just... [more]

Healthy ways to accomplish relaxing/decompression brought about by destructive habits?
for me lately it's camping. even those cheesy campsites that you pull your car up to and pitch tent (they'll usually have bathrooms and showers too). There's just something about having all that time and nothing to do (there's obviously lots to do when your camping but it's all different, you'll find it entertaining to 'waste' half an hour just sitting there whittling a stick or something). If you don't have anyone to go with, just go by yourself.. it's only one afternoon/night/morning if you... [more]
