Ask post: Fair Use or Not?
This is the very definition of fair use. Remember, trademark law is designed to prevent consumer confusion, not to prevent people from speaking the name (or showing a picture) of the mark.

Ask post: How do I find text inside php?
If Windows Grep isn't finding it, you're either using it wrong, or it isn't there.

Ask post: I need a computer program made.
The SomethingAwful forums always have a 'request a tiny custom app!' thread in their hardware/software forums which is pretty active (over 1000 replies right now) and is also free.

Oh, so you're not asking for effective anti-drug materials, just anti-drug materials. That makes it a lot easier.

Ask post: Is my Ikea desk killing my MacBook Pro hard drive?
The resonance frequency of your desk might be the same as the vibration frequency caused by your MacBook. Your MacBook might not be making any extra noise when it's on the desk, it's just that the desk is acting as a giant desk-sized speaker. Pick up a $2 rubber shock mount (or use something foamy) to stick between the laptop and the desk to see if that changes anything.

Ask post: Would the police really give out autopsy details
Five feet is nothing at all, you'd have to be really unlucky to break your neck on a 5-foot drop, and you'd have to land right on your head, so your legs/arms would probably be fine. At twenty feet, however, there will be serious injuries all over the place.

Ask post: Radical history project asks nation for way to change link.
You could do this with an SSI, an IFRAME, PHP, Perl or any one of a hundred other solutions, depending on what your server architecture is.

You haven't given any details on your site, though. What server are you running? What languages does it support? What kind of access do you have to make configuration changes?

Ask post: How to deal with an intelligent conspiracy theorist friend?
How do you deal with people like this?

You don't. People like this don't believe conspiracies because they're convinced by the evidence, they believe them because the conspiracy fulfills a psychological need they have. It's not that different from religion, and you're going to have about as much success proving that 9/11 wasn't a conspiracy as you would be proving that communion isn't the body of Christ.

Ask post: How do I get paid for producing an unsigned artist?
Producers who do unsigned bands almost never get royalties, they get a flat fee for their work. As said, this is something you should have talked about beforehand -- but most production is work-for-hire, unless you're looking at big names who can demand royalties, and even then the royalties are pretty small - Butch Vig's royalty rate for records like Nevermind and Gish is somewhere around 3%.

Ask post: Validating data on a pledge form
You don't want to do this in JS. This is logic that you want performed on the server-side, otherwise any user could turn off Javascript (or modify the Javascript) and add all the gifts they want to their basket.

Whatever is powering the contribution page -- PHP, ASP, Perl, etc. -- that's what you want to use to make these changes.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Jairus at 5:09 AM on March 13, 2008
Either way, however, the validation code needs to be written, and there's no point writing it client-side -- that's just poor design. It's not going to be significantly more or less complicated in JS than it will be in PHP or whatever your form is written in. The place to put it is with the rest of your server-side form validation.

Ask post: North American CD Replication using Super Jewel Boxes?
Speaking as a DJ, the SJB is a thousand times better. It doesn't break when I drop it, it doesn't open by itself if it's upside-down, the hinge doesn't stick, etc. It's a better mousetrap.

I do understand your point about in-store part replacement, but the CD isn't going to be sold in stores, so it's a bit of a non-issue.

Ask post: Recommendations/sources for good erotic writing?
I think sex blogs probably have (or link to) more of what you're looking for than old asstr stories, honestly. Sites like Debachette, Reverse Cowgirl, or Violet Blue (who has published several compilations of sex writing) is where I'd start.

Ask post: Is the chipped lining in my old microwave dangerous?
It's not like metal and a microwave are like bleach and ammonia. Metal only sparks in a microwave when there's a gap for it to arc across.

You can microwave most spoons without any problem, as an example, but forks will have immediate arcing between the tines.

Ask post: What would you give someone in a juvenile correctional facility?
Music.

...and not music you like, music he likes.

Have any of you ever been to juvie, or know anyone who has? If anyone I knew from juvie had gotten a copy of "A Thousand Names for Joy", it would be toilet paper and spitballs within a week. Not to mention, other kids are going to laugh their asses off.

Books are a good idea, but much closer to klangklangston than fandango_matt.

Testing your website in Safari and Konqueror is really the only business case I can think of, give how little information you've given us about your business.

With that said, if you can't make a real business case out of your crashing/productivity argument, it's probably not a very good argument.

Ask post: HD Favourites
I've watched a fair bit of HD, and there have been a few standouts:

Planet Earth. It's a documentary series, not a film, but it's the most visually stunning thing I've ever seen on a screen. Ever.

There are a few obvious (and good) choices, like 300, Pan's Labyrinth, and Sin City, but I've found the films I've enjoyed the most in HD are older ones, like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing, and 2001.

My new favourite... [more]

Ask post: Grammar Question: Is or Isn't?
It's grammatically correct, assuming that you're trying to say that snow isn't cold.

Actually, it's grammatically correct even if you mean snow is cold, it's just not factually correct.

Either way, your girlfriend is correct when she laughs at you.

Ask post: How long is waitlist at WMA or CAA?
Are you talking about entertainment law, or A&R/management?
posted to Ask Metafilter by Jairus at 6:30 PM on December 1, 2007
To Jairus, William Morris and CAA are talent agencies. They handle booking concert dates/negotiating money for the artists. It does involve some scouting, but generally all of their artists already have a record deal. The record industry is dead. It's about touring.

dannon205, I know who they are. I work with WMA regularly, and I know people who have been hired recently at WMA -- in both entertainment law, and in A&R/management. This is why I'm asking.

Ask post: Six-figure prices
When you revalue a currency, the public loses confidence in the value and stability of that currency. This can lead to inflation, which can lead to revalued currency, which, in the right economic environment, can lead to Zimbabwe.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Jairus at 12:40 AM on December 2, 2007
Ignore my earlier comment about inflation, I was sleepy and confused redenomination (which can strengthen confidence) with revaluation (which can weaken it).

(To clarify, we're discussing redenomination, not revaluation.)

Ask post: How do you use OneNote?
I no longer have a desktop full of .txt files saved for random notes, writings, or quotes. I have a nice, neat notebook.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Jairus at 7:18 PM on November 18, 2007
The difference between OneNote and those tons of programs is that OneNote is a pleasure to use. It auto-saves, it auto-indexes for search, it's drag/drop and copy/paste functionality is miles ahead of anything else, it has simple, intuitive organizational markers, etc.

I've tried to use a lot of programs to do these things over the years, but OneNote is the only one that I've ended up still using after a month.

Ask post: Bandwidth analysis
A computer connected to a router is only going to see the traffic that the router sends it.

You need to either get the stats from the router (Tomato can do this, I haven't used DD-WRT),, put a machine between the router and the internet connection running Smoothwall or m0n0wall, or use a switch as a traffic repeater to send the data to a third PC.

If you hate yourself, you can build a passive ethernet tap and run the data to a Snort box.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Jairus at 7:54 PM on November 12, 2007
I'd just use a router running Tomato.

Ask post: General stats on hitmen?
Forktine's got it right. Being a hitman is a short, brutal, and underpaid existence. Pastabagel's assertion that hitmen are all psychopaths are way off the mark, however. Most hitmen aren't terribly different from most club bouncers, in my experience; it's just an escalation of violence. Bouncers don't feel bad about cracking heads when someone slaps a drunk girl in a club, you know?

Normal people don't find hitmen, the same way normal people don't... [more]

Ask post: How much legal trouble could I get into?
I would say, as a practical matter, that law enforcement has very little interest in monitoring vague confessions on the web. Everybody knows that what's posted on the web has to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

This isn't true for all agencies. If you post a submission which said "I'm going to slap the president when I meet him" or "I'd take him out if I could" or something along those lines, you can expect a visit from the Secret Service.
