Address by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin on Gay Marriage.
Taking the bull by the horns, Mr. Martin speaks to the House of Commons regarding
Bill C-38, The Civil Marriage Act:
"This question does not demand rhetoric. It demands clarity. There are only two legitimate answers – yes or no. Not the demagoguery we have heard, not the dodging, the flawed reasoning, the false options. Just yes or no."
One of the finest speeches from a Canadian politician in memory, and an important read for Canadians and Americans alike.

In response to Justice Konrad von Finckenstein ruling that
file sharing was legal in Canada (previously discussed
here), Federal Heritage Minister Helene Scherrer has stated that
"As minister of Canadian Heritage, I will, as quickly as possible, make changes to our copyright law".
The problem is that Canadian copyright law has been going through a slow and thoughtful reformation process. Since the unveiling of
A Framework for Copyright Reform in 2001, a lot of progress has been made in updating the laws to reflect the needs and concerns of content producers, and the public domain.
Now, however, it seems that all of this work may be bulldozed by Helene Scherrer, who
declared her intentions at the Juno Awards last night.

SFGate is running an article on an
internet assisted suicide that's worth reading.
Not because of the minutiae, or any implied morality/immorality regarding suicide, but simply because it's a well-researched, well-written story of the culture of those who are about to die.

Designer Drugs and Raves - Second Edition (PDF). A Royal Canadian Mounted Police document designed to educate and inform police officers and social workers alike, complete with helpful photos of "The Candy Raver".
The result of a three-year 'intelligence probe' into the rave scene, it's an interesting read, and a fairly good indication of the Canadian government's attitude towards increasing drug use at raves and nightclubs.

A quick break from all the WTC stuff... Considering the recent events, it's probably been overlooked.
Canada is proposing a
Consultation Paper on Digital Copyright Issues which is similar to the DMCA in the US.
All comments on it have to be received by Sept. 15th. You can read the
EFF Alert, for more information.

National Geographic Traveler has put together a list of
50 places in the world you should visit in your lifetime. I'm not as well traveled as I'd like to be, so I really don't know if these places are as impressive as they sound. Did they leave anything out, or does that just about cover it?

Isolating the gene responsible for caffeine
is expected to lead to decaffeinated beans, and a higher-quality coffee product, all-around... But are they considering other applications? With a bit of gene splicing, anything is possible. Caffeinated oranges, anyone?

The Burning Man website
has undergone a massive redesign, it seems. Much better than before, and with only 12 days left to BM2K. I could cry, really... I can't make it this year, nor did I make it to
Defcon,
H2K, or any other gather.
Bring back stories from the fire for me, people.

Well, we're all screwed.
Seems like BT patented hyperlinking years ago, and they plan to aggressively enforce it in the US. Anyone know how to setup blogger for gopher?
