shine on your crazy tourmaline (or whatever)

When I was a kid living in La Mesa, California, my mother got to poke around in the tailings at local tourmaline and mica mines as part of weekend classes we took at the natural history museum. Are there any kinds of similar gemstone mines anywhere near where I live now - Sacramento, California - that offer similar opportunities?

heart health & my new diet

I am 37, 5'9", 185 & just had a minor heart attack. Diagnosis: diffuse coronary disease. I swim several times a week, and eat well. But I have questions about my new diet, the one that will help me lose 30 - 50 lbs in 2 years, as my cardiologist wants.

out of the blue, into the black

When I build a spot gradient in Indesign or Illustrator I'm not getting exactly what I want. What I want: a very dark blue (say, PMS 2756) to black - with the blue getting darker and darker toward black. What I get on screen and on proof: the blue becoming a lighter gray, then the gray darkening toward black. I assume the solution rests in using a blue > nothing gradient in a layer above a blue > black and messing with overprinting / transparency but I'm unsure how to proceed. Any advice?

chinese food stall at Berkeley BART?

Can anyone confirm or deny the current existence of that Chinese food stall that used to be parked outside the Downtown Berkeley BART station - it was green and red/pink at one point, earlier than that pink and red - which serves these amazing, incredible dumplings (pork, shrimp or chicken)? Is it still there?

look at that S car go

My friend says the fuel injection in my 2002 Jetta wagon (non-diesel) suffers if I let the tank get less than 1/4 full. She also believes that "el cheapo" gasoline, from locally-owned non-chain stations, isn't as good, or is actively bad, for the car. Is there any truth to either of these claims?

do you hear that?

I hear things that other people don't. Not like voices, but more like a really painful high-pitched whine. So high that I've never heard anything like it. I've wondered for years what it was, and recently heard it at a shoe store and asked the employee - she noticed me flinch - and was told it was their burglar alarm, that the employee didn't hear it but knew that some customers had a problem with it.

dim sum & then some

A caveat: I prefer New Green Bo to all of these. However, with a group of 10 friends from out of town, do you recommend Jing Fong, Golden Unicorn or another one of Manhattan's giant dim sum emporiums? I'm looking for quality and range. I haven't been back in Jing Fong since it was remodeled but I assume it's still pretty nice.

The template is a stock Typepad template, although I'm slowly making it an "advanced" template and will try to figure out how to make all the typelists appear in that by coding them manually.

whence the yuba city sikh parade?

How can I find out the dates of the upcoming 2007 Yuba City Sikh parade/festival? As some of you may know, this is the largest gathering of Sikh people outside of India/Pakistan, and many tens of thousands (sometimes hundreds of thousands) of people come from all over the US to eat the amazing free food, see the floats, and generally have a great time. Non-Sikhs are invited, and I want to go, but can't find the date anywhere.

like ask.mefi - only completely different

My friends and I are working - and when I say working, I should add that it is with only very vague direction as we are almost all self-taught - on a web project which we think would be very useful to many people. It is in some small respect tangentially similar to Metafilter, but would not compete with it. Are there any out-of-the-box products, commercial or free, that allow a similar question-and-answer (or comment-and-answer) functionality, where anyone can post and/or comment?

iPod Nano case & caveat

Can anyone recommend a sturdy armband holder (for working out) for the iPod Nano (current version) that will work with the FM tuner attachment? I've looked at a half dozen on Amazon and it seems like they only have a small headphone out on the bottom, and none will take the larger dock-like block that the FM tuner attaches to.

help me get my money back!

I got a piece of junk mail from a company called Florida Direct Vacations who said they were going to charge me $140 for some kind of vacation package if I didn't cancel the order by May 22. I think they got my credit card information from Holland America, who I took a cruise with a few years ago; they claim to be some kind of authorized reseller for them, although I've never done business with Florida Direct Vacations before. I called and canceled, and they charged my debit card anyway. I've called and they say they never got my cancellation and, basically, tough luck. What now?

bigfoot's RV

I'm going to the Sasquatch festival in George, WA in a coupla weeks. Apparently they no longer have any RV camping spots available, and none of the local campgrounds we've found will take an RV, either ... Any ideas on where we can park our RV legally near there? And any ideas on how we can get to the Gorge from the RV spot, since they say no RV parking is allowed? We are, obviously, RV newbies (it's a rental).

map of Greene & Greene homes Using the social-mapping tool Platial, I've created this map of all (I think!) currently-existing Greene & Greene homes. There are a few civil structures - walls, bridges, memorials - that I've yet to add, and eventually I'll include a layer for destroyed/demolished structures as well. This map is to accompany my primary hobby, Hewn & Hammered (http://www.hewnandhammered.com), and I'll eventually make maps showing all structures by Frank Lloyd Wright, Maybeck, Morris and other important architects in the Arts & Crafts movement and its various children.

on the road again

In late May, I'll be driving with a bunch of friends in an RV from Sacramento CA to George WA and back for the Sasquatch Music Festival. I've only driven as far north as the Oregon border before, so I'm looking for recommendations of interesting places to stop - your favorite diners, pie shops, waterfalls, hot springs (improved or not) and other oddities of northwest highway culture. I'm familar with many Northern California hot springs (I really like the one in Sierraville), and would love to find other very inexpensive and informal places like that.

help me help the man

I'm trying to make my new web project legal in California. After reading through the Nolo press book(s), we thought that perhaps the LLC was the best corporate structure (we are going to issue stock and give the primary developer a portion in lieu of payment). While the Federal government taxes LLCs like sole proprietorships - you aren't taxed unless you make profit, and I don't see our profit outpacing our costs for a year - the State of California charges an LLC "tax" (really a fee) of $800, due almost immediately after your incorporation paperwork goes through, so...

force fins vs. force fins

Are Force Fin-brand "slim fins" just as good for recreational SCUBA diving and snorkeling as the standard "original/dive" model? I like all the adjustable options of the slim fin, but I am wondering why every vendor - not just the examples on Amazon - show the more customizeably and sturdier looking slim fin as being $10-$20 less expensive than the original/dive model.

looking for letters

Harvard students, staff, faculty & visitors: Where's the good lettering? I'm looking for recommendations for the best engraved lettering, printing, calligraphy and other lettering on your campus in preparation for an upcoming visit. The type of stuff I am talking about: like the inscriptions on the Harvard Gates, or the Eric Gill piece downstairs in the memorial chapel. Any suggestions? For that matter, any typographic or chirographic must-sees in Boston and Cambridge overall?

cool phones that don't work here

My wife and I are hosting some Korean exchange / homestay students while they study English here. One of the students has a really amazing cell phone - well actually all their phones are pretty slick. Super high res screens, high resolution cameras, slide out keyboards, better battery life, color phasing led-backlit keys, etc. I realize these don't work here because of "something to do with networks," but can anyone tell me WHY? and can these devices be altered to work here? And besides things like Treos and sidekicks and stuff like that, are there cool and relatively inexpensive phones available here? Is there a all-mobile-device weblog like Gizmodo or something that lists them?

i will, now, drive 55

I got an extremely expensive traffic ticket (my first! and $632!) for doing 97 in a 75 on a lonely stretch of road outside of Lovelock, Nevada. I paid the ticket, and asked the court (and the ticketing officer, at that point) about traffic school; they both said that the points wouldn't transfer to California or go on my record, but as far as traffic school to lower insurance went, it was between me and my insurance company, and they'd get in touch with me. However, can't I do something pre-emptively to keep this from going on my insurance record? Or am I screwed? I paid the fine in mid-June, just before it was due (took a little while to save the money); the ticket was issued in mid-May.

bungalow neighborhoods

What US neighborhoods are best known for interesting examples of Craftsman homes? I know about the various bay area neighborhoods - the Maybecks of the Berkeley hills, Westwood Park in SF, etc.; I'm familiar with Pasadena and its Bungalow Heaven, as well as Santa Barbara's many restored bungalows - and I'm familiar with similar neighborhoods here in Sacramento, where I live now. What I'm mainly looking for are out of the way, underrated or less-known neighborhoods with interesting historical and architectural character, specifically expressed in homes built in the Craftsman aesthetic - from the conservative late Victorian through the Prairie and Mission revival.

stoned at harvard

Who is responsible for the wonderful type engraved in stone seen on gated walls around the Harvard campus? I am not talking about architectural lettering, but about the several quotes engraved in slabs of smooth stone and mounted in the walls separating various parts of the campus. The work looks contemporary, or at least very well-cared-for.

i was standing by the window

Made most popular to many Americans as the closing song for the Grand Ole Opry programs, Will The Circle Be Unbroken was written in 1907 by Ada Habershon, an intensely religious young woman and acquaintance of Dwight Moody and Ira David Sankey. The music was "composed" by Charles Gabriel, a popular songwriter and composer of the era who is often solely credited with the song, but while he may have put the notes down on paper, the tune itself already existed as the African-American spiritual Glory Glory / Since I Laid My Burden Down. Am trying to figure out a better way to integrate the photo hosting, which I've moved to Flickr (having it on Typepad caused me to go over my bandwidth limit every month, and they won't extend it or let me buy more; I guess it wasn't a good idea to start it there, oh well!). bad screen! bad!

My mother has an Acer LCD (model AL1715) hooked up to her Mac Mini. The warranty expired 3 days ago, and last night it woke up after being asleep for about 45 minutes with a black line across it - the image divided in such a way that the image has rolled - that is, the bottom is at the top and the top at the bottom, split not quite equal halves. Disconnecting and reconnecting don't work, powering off and back on don't work, changing the display mode on the mac doesn't work, and we can't find a reset button. Acer doesn't answer tech support phone calls (endless holds) or emails. Any ideas?

the gas face

I was thinking about buying a commercial range for my kitchen - a Vulcan costs half as much as a Wolf and has the same output, same safety rating, same dependability and two folks I know who use them love them. However, many of the sellers will only sell to a commercial entity - not just for tax purposes, although I could understand that, but because they tell me my insurance company won't allow it, that I'll need fireproof floors, and industrial venting etc.
