MeTa post: Grow the hell up.
Who's dirtynumbangelboy and why does he assume we have an opinion about him?
Not disingenuous, some context would be appreciated.

MeTa post: Weekly World MeFi
Plutor: always nice to meet a fan.
It's still a crap post IMO, though, even with our favorite librarian mod's Nihil Obstat.
Oh well, half a deletion is better than none.

So if signal was complaining about this post solely because it involves a celebrity, I would agree. ... And he was.

Nope, I'm complaining about a post about celebrity gossip. It's right there, in words #6 & 7 of my post.

So Steve Jobs is a different celebrity that Amy Winehouse? Or Adam Savage?

I, for one, never said so. Sure there's a lot of crap posts... [more]

You're going to need plenty of legal advice before this thing is over. As your attorney, I advise you to rent a very fast car with no top. And you'll need the cocaine. Tape recorder for special music. Acapulco shirts.

There should be a click + simple chord progression -track so there's at least a semblance of harmony and rhythm.

Would it make sense to have more than 1 thread, say 3 or so, depending on how many people sign up, so we're not all sitting around waiting for our turn?

Why would you comment on something you have no knowledge about? For shits and giggles?

You know, docpops, a lot of people in MeFi in general (and many, many in AskMe) have reading comprehension issues, but you're the first one I've encountered who doesn't seem to understand what they themselves wrote.

MeTa post: Is an Infoviz of MetaFilter copying, stealing, or remixing?
I didn't participate in the thread, but I feel you thinkpiece. The rephrasing is really facile and presumptive.
The fact that he paraphrases in the first person is fairly creepy.
Also, the project adds nothing to the original thread, in fact takes away from it by decontextualizing it. There are no new relations found, no new readings of the posts (except for the already mentioned not-so-great rephrasings).
Not so much art as bare appropriation.

MeTa post: Look, Ma, I'm full of piss and vinegar
Obit threads are quite pointless, and almost always break the guidelines: they're hardly ever a link to something interesting on the web, just an opportunity to chat about some dead guy/girl.
So if the chatting is positive or negative, who gives a flying fuck? The FPP itself is not worthy of being posted. I propose automatic deletion of all obit threads, including the one under discussion.

MeTa post: Utter tripe!
This callout is utter tripe. The guy makes good points in every one of the 'offending' links, and he does so with well written, spelled and punctuated sentences. If that's arrogant, we need a lot more arrogance on MeFi.
I'll trade 1 reference to Voltaire for 1000 'eponysterical', 'I for one...', "you know who else..." injokes, or for all the bad puns that pass for debate around here.
The fact that the dude is well read and refrences actually substantial... [more]

Most religions have a central core of sociopathy, basically teaching that following their precepts, taboos, etc., is more important than excercising basic human empathy.
Anybody who claims their religion commands them to discriminate against others, denying their basic human rights, and otherwise treating them as sub-human needs to take a long hard look at themselves and their beliefs.

Here's the thing: from the outside, as someone who espouses none of the faiths in question, anybody who says he/she/it's a christian is one, just for saying so. There's no test of 'real christianity' beyond that.
From inside one of the faiths in question, who the fuck knows? They probably don't consider the person sitting in the pew next to them a 'real' christian because they bow/kneel/donate in a slightly different way.

MeTa post: alphabetical list of MeFi usernames?
I've always wanted to see a large social graph of metafilter.

I could easily do a screen scrape of the user pages and create a graph (using favorites as edges) in NetworkX, and then publish the graph in a few different formats for anybody who wanted to analyse it. I don't know if this kind of one-time screen scrape of the whole site is frowned upon, though.
posted to MetaTalk by signal at 8:13 AM on January 12, 2008
cortex: I'm thinking a graph where every user is a node and every 'favorite' is a directed edge from the favoriter to the favoritee. So maybe a list of all the favorites listing -er and -ee by username, comma- or tab- delimited would do the trick.
Something like:

signal cortex
signal mathowie
pb cortex

meaning that 'signal' has favorited cortex and mathowie, and pb has favorited cortex.... [more]

cortex: networkx seems fairly robust and scalable. For my thesis my dataset had 10.000 nodes with an average degree of 5.000, so there where a lot of connections. Analyzing betweenness-, closeness- & degree-centrality plus clustering for all nodes took about 1.5 hours.

localhuman: of course. Mi data es su data.

It might be interesting to have some more data associated with users: date of sign up, number of posts, tags used, etc. Basically... [more]
