Enter the Velodrome
a friend once commented to me that metafilter is absolutely terrible at discussing things that require getting away from the computer to understand. i see this post is no exception.
i ride my (yes, brakeless) track bike around 200 miles a week, around san francisco and up in to marin. its fun, and i dont see its popularity waning any time soon, at least around here.
someone earlier posted something about "trixies on fixies" so here... [more]

Wunderground: Providence, 1995- present
Neat. I remember seeing many of those posters (and going to a few of the shows) around Providence. I studied printmaking at RISD just after all those guys did, so that stuff brings back a lot of memories. Fun times. I miss it.

“Our films are not about heavy-metal for 45 minutes, guys giving the middle finger and guys showing off their tattoos."
On a similar note, people might enjoy MASH a film about fixed gear riders in San Francisco. Theres a teaser on the site, I saw an early version of it at the bike film festival last year and was really impressed. The final dvd should be comming out soon. It is directed by Mike Martin, a professional photographer, and Gabe Morford, who is a pretty famous skate videographer. Course, its got tattoos and heavy metal in the teaser, but its a bit more than that in the full version....... [more]

Coincidental PSA
I've been waiting for 123456 and 666666 for quite a while, stemming from a drunken conversation last fall. I guess I should get a blog and then I'd be famous, too.

Xeni sucks
I was never so surprised as to find his scraggly mug 250 miles out in the middle of the nowhere desert at one of my friend's techno-music-worship orgies, clad in reeking, moth eaten tie-dyes trying to pick up on the youngest guy there. Who was two dozen kinds of disturbed and squicked out.
Yea I got to witness that when he crashed a drum n bass party my friends put on about 8 years ago. Gross.

Suicide is not painless
I dunno about all this. My morbid self has been reading this every morning in the paper, but I just can't get behind the idea of a barrier. First issue I have is the aforementioned aesthetics. Even if a barrier couldn't be seen from the road, its the way the bridge looks from afar that makes it such a cherished landmark. I don't want to change that, I don't want a daily reminder that we have to safety proof our world just because a few people want to hurt themselves.... [more]

The one thing I will say for the articles though, is at least they finally pushed that stupid "Alicia's Story" crap off the front page.
(And for that you can accuse me of insensitivity, and I welcome it with open arms.)

San Francisco 16 years later
I was in Mill Valley on my way home from a soccer game, when a playground that I was driving by started waving like it was made of rubber. I had no idea how serious it was till reports on the radio started comming in, and I got home finding a big crack in the sheetrock wall in the living room.

Jeannot's Floorboards
Wow. Haunting and deffinately creepy. I'm really not sure how I feel about it, but it has deffinately got an interesting history to it. It's such a freaky cultural artifact, though I'm not sure what place it has in a museum.
Other than that, it reminds me of the wonderful art of Nathan Cordero, though mostly just on a formal level.

Bristol Myers Squibb? Hah, nice ironic twist that it's owned by a company that makes medication for schizophrenia.

gagglezoomer - I fumbled a bit when I was revising what I typed. I'd love to see this too, I just meant it's placement in an art museum versus an anthropology museum or something. I deffinately agree with for the most part you about about painted vases and Jesus painting.

ViolinMP3
Seems like an interesting link, but in the future do you think you could give a little description along with your one word posts (which you seem to do a lot)? I like having an idea of what I'm clicking on. The page seems pretty extensive, what are some highlights? Why'd you link it? Violins are cool, and sound nice and all, but I don't know whats so great about this page.

They all kind of sound like bad martial arts movies. Where's Operation 5 Deadly Venoms, or Operation Snake Fist in Eagles Shadow??
Operation Iron Monkey? Operation Ninja Death I, II, and III?
