How much worse is the carry-on baggage situation getting?

Question for frequent flyers: have airlines' new pay-to-check-a-bag policies significantly affected how much baggage passengers are trying to carry on board? To the point where it's gone from just aggravating to completely !%@#!*#@ impossible?

Should I gamble on airfares staying put for a few days?

A dear friend just died back home; I want to fly there (Seattle-Minneapolis round-trip) for the funeral, which will be sometime next week. The exact date hasn't been decided yet, however, and could take a couple of days to get settled. Right now there are some very inexpensive Seattle-Minneapolis air fares, and I don't know how long they'll last. I could just go ahead and buy a ticket for some arbitrary departure/arrival dates, and then change it if needed for a $75 change fee, gambling that in the next few days fares will go up more than $75. For those of you with more experience than I in tracking air fares--would that be a good strategy? Or should I sit tight and hope the fares will hold for a few more days?

Can martial arts really teach me to fall safely?

Can martial arts practice really help one overcome the instinct to break a fall by putting out one's hand? And if so, what form of martial arts teaches this most effectively?

Livejournal pages (and only Livejournal pages) are loading with excruciating slowness on my desktop computer (and only on my desktop computer). What gives??

Banking options in relocating to Seattle

I'm moving to Seattle later this month, and--being an ignoramus about banks--am trying to figure out the best banking arrangements to set up for myself.

Best. Judicial. Ruling. EVER.

Bradshaw v. Unity Marine Corp., Inc. (147 F.Supp.2d 668) "Both attorneys have obviously entered into a secret pact--complete with hats, handshakes and cryptic words--to draft their pleadings entirely in crayon on the back sides of gravy-stained paper place mats, in the hope that the Court would be so charmed by their child-like efforts that their utter dearth of legal authorities in their briefing would go unnoticed. Whatever actually occurred, the Court is now faced with the daunting task of deciphering their submissions. With Big Chief tablet readied, thick black pencil in hand, and a devil-may-care laugh in the face of death, life on the razor's edge sense of exhilaration, the Court begins."

Getting plastic smell out of new luggage

I bought a new suitcase recently, and when I got it home discovered that the interior (which is lined in some sort of plastic or vinyl) has a very strong plastic-y/chemical smell. I've tried leaving it open to air out, I've tried putting some dryer sheets inside and closing it, but nothing has helped abate the stank. I'm going on a trip on Thursday and don't want my clothes to reek of chemicals! Any ideas?

The Control of Nature, revisited

Atchafalaya. As part of its coverage of the hurricane, the New Yorker has reposted on-line John McPhee's 1987 article on the Atchafalaya basin and the Army Corps of Engineer's long-running efforts to control the Mississippi. An excellent piece from one of our best writers.

Japanese smoking etiquette

In summertime, the arms that pass near my lit cigarette are bare. A collection of Japanese smoking etiquette signs, some haiku-like, some heart-rending, and some just strange. (via Mimi Smartypants)

Recommendations for voice recognition software?

I need to buy voice recognition software for someone I supervise. I want to provide him with a range of options to choose from, but also informed opinions on the pros/cons of each. What have been people's experiences with the various brands out there?

World's only revolving building

World's only revolving building? The heck with revolving rooftop restaurants, I want to live in Suite Vollard, an entire apartment building whose eleven circular units can each revolve 360 degrees. (Unfortunately for me, it's in Brazil.) More photos are here.

Scared of Santa

Ho Ho Waaaahhhh!! A lot of kids don't like standing in long lines. A lot of kids don't like strangers (especially ones with big fake beards who are laughing dementedly). A lot of kids don't like having their pictures taken. Put them all together, and you've got the nightmare of the Kid's Photo With Santa, some unfortunate results of which are immortalized in the Scared Of Santa Photo Gallery. (Link is to #2, which is my favorite.)

divided voters, decided voters

Two Americas, but not the ones you might have thought. Apologies for perpetuating ElectionFilter, but this page has, in addition to all the blue/red/purple maps we've seen, a bar graph at the bottom of the page that I find fascinating. To quote the authors, "It appears that there are, as the pundits have been telling us, 'two Americas,' but they are not the ones people usually talk about. They are 'divided America,' where people split roughly evenly between Republican and Democrat, and 'decided America,' where everyone is a Democrat. " (via Crooked Timber)

The Dionaea House. Just in time for Halloween, a pleasingly creepy piece of fiction. (Or is it??) An epistolary horror story, for the e-mail/phone text messaging/LiveJournal age. (Be sure to check out the Update section; the LJ is linked from there.) And I'm assuming further updates will continue to appear ...

Tablet PCs (a) seem to be very cool, and (b) look like they would meet my particular needs (note-taking at meetings and during conversations, capturing diagrams and informal charts/sketches) better than either conventional laptops or handhelds. But they don't seem to be very popular, and it's hard to find good on-line reviews or comparative assessments of models. So I'm wondering if any of you who have used one can offer reactions (positive or negative), recommendations, or buying advice.

Surviving chemical, biological and nuclear attacks

"Your defense is as always to not panic." I have no way to evaluate this guy's credentials or the validity of his advice--the host site seems a bit wonky, to put it mildly--but he provides a pithy, duct-tape-free, and oddly comforting counterpoint to some of the official recommendations on surviving chemical, biological and nuclear attacks.

Names, names, names. Whoever Jerry Hill is, he clearly has a glorious obsession with the naming of things, and he's created a massive but reasonably well-organized compendium of relevant links. It's easy to find sites that will offer to help you name your baby, or your pet; but where else will you find one source for links to sites on "Unfortunate Rose Names"? "Naming Your Homeschool"? "Welsh Castle Names"? "Weird Little Taxes with Oddball Names"? "Jamaican Bus Names"? (The only thing I see lacking is a link to any site about how internet users choose their on-line handles, a topic I find fascinating...)
