MeTa post: Seattle Brunch
Though I've now moved down to Olympia, I should be able to drive up for the day. (To hell with the gas budget!)

MeTa post: The Sun Is Here Seattle, Let's Have A Meetup!
I'd love to be there, though the weekend of the 29-30 won't work for me. If that's what's best for others, though, I'll just look forward to the next one, and wish everyone a great time.

MeTa post: There is a snark in the title, covered with a URL
You know, I totally expected that thread to be 100% a Rehash of Schadenfreude Past (Christian conservative variety), and hence dismissable, but I have to say that the calm and informative expertise provided by Clay201 made the whole snarkfest worth it, and is an excellent example of why I continue to hang around this place. Big ups to him.

MeTa post: A hiatus isn't a moratorium, but it'd be nice.
Jessamyn's second point above is, I think, very important here. Asshats People who post ill-advised complaints are probably only going to feel further put-upon and discriminated against if all they get is a thumbs-down e-mail from an admin, whereas a public drubbing by one's peers, as unsalutary a spectacle as that may be, will do more to make it clear that they've transgressed broadly-held community norms, not just an admin's personal taste or judgment.

MeTa post: So I solved this problem, based on the help given...
Oh, man. Revisiting the s_o_m conflagration (*wipes nostalgic tear*) led, synchronistically, to rediscovering a gem that Miguel posted in that thread, but which I think is eminently apropos for this one as well.

MeTa post: Photos from Friday's Minneapolis meetup....
Great job with the photos! I really regret not having been able to make it, but after last week at work, hauling myself up off the sofa Friday evening was just not happening. Hope to see you all at some future meetup!

MeTa post: Minneapolis Meet-Up This Friday, April...
I think I should be able to make it (barring unexpected developments).

MeTa post: Minneapolis-St. Paul mefites, let's get our meetup...
Coming into this late, but I'd be interested in attending. 8/16 I'll be out of town; most of the Sept. dates look good to me, though Sat. nights tend to work less well. Either the 4th or 8th would be great.

MeTa post: Imminent death of MetaFilter predicted....
Way upstream, anapestic said:
I agree completely, but to be fair, I think SDB announced his departure on his own page, and not here.

Bingo, and that point seems to have gotten a bit lost in the shuffle. Look, years of online life have left me as weary as anyone of people who choose to leave a community (MeFi, mailing lists, whatever) by conducting a grand-opera fuck-you-all spleen-vent in that same community before... [more]

MeTa post: A minor etiquette question, really, regarding...
I have several on-line friends in other fora whose screen names are all lower case, and my rule of thumb is to follow their preference except when their name begins a sentence, figuring that any noun beginning a sentence gets capped. (I used to work as a copy editor, and old habits die hard.) No one's seemed bothered by this approach, but if anyone did, I would of course follow his or her preference; I think names, especially chosen ones, have significance and deserve respect.... [more]
