You know, I totally expected that thread to be 100% a Rehash of Schadenfreude Past (Christian conservative variety), and hence dismissable, but I have to say that the calm and informative expertise provided by Clay201 made the whole snarkfest worth it, and is an excellent example of why I continue to hang around this place. Big ups to him.

Jessamyn's second point above is, I think, very important here. Asshats People who post ill-advised complaints are probably only going to feel further put-upon and discriminated against if all they get is a thumbs-down e-mail from an admin, whereas a public drubbing by one's peers, as unsalutary a spectacle as that may be, will do more to make it clear that they've transgressed broadly-held community norms, not just an admin's personal taste or judgment.

I have several on-line friends in other fora whose screen names are all lower case, and my rule of thumb is to follow their preference except when their name begins a sentence, figuring that any noun beginning a sentence gets capped. (I used to work as a copy editor, and old habits die hard.) No one's seemed bothered by this approach, but if anyone did, I would of course follow his or her preference; I think names, especially chosen ones, have significance and deserve respect.... [more]
