Things to do in Birmingham
I just moved to Birmingham at the end of December, but can definitely recommend Bottega and Taj India for lunch or dinner, and can second Bottletree for live music.
I've started having indie bands coming through town stop by to play a couple of songs on our patio (I plan to put the videos on my music blog) and enjoy a relaxed lunch or dinner. E-mail me before you come, you're welcome to join us if the schedules work out.

Sit different
My wife actually uses an exercise ball for a desk chair at her massage office. She read that using one would help her balance (and offer a bit of exercise while sitting) and has been pretty happy with it.

Music loss shock horror
After a couple of home server drive crashes, I now use two identical RAID drives to back up my data (striping instead of mirroring). I do lose some capacity, but can sleep better at night.

Fave iPod accessories?
I have the Shure EC3 earbuds, an iSkinz Evo, and a Belkin FM transmitter to go with my 4g iPod. If I had it to do over again, i would have picked up an iTrip transmitter instead. The iSkinz sleeve tends to pick up lint and little bits of trash from my messenger bag, but it's a great accessory to save the iPod from dings and scratches.

I upgraded my site to from 2.65 to 3.1x around Christmas to take advantage of MT-Blacklist 2.x's auto-updating feature.
The upgrade is pretty painless, as long as you follow directions. If you're comfortable uploading files and changing their permissions, it's a pretty easy task.

QIbHom is thinking of Greenbrier Barbecue, the new one is right off I-565 at the Greenbrier Rd exit, the old one os down Greenbrier Road. The catfish is much better than the pulled pork, in my humble opinion.
My town (Decatur, about twenty miles west of Huntsville) has one respectable barbecue joint (Big Bob Gibson's) that wins many national awards.
I can second the Ave Maria Grotto recommendation, it is truly a unique experience. Have you been... [more]

My wife is a massage therapist who practices manual lymph drainage. She often uses it to treat lymphedema, cancer patients and other maladies. It is a wonderful way to deal with clogged sinuses due to allergies as well. Her clients are always pleased with the results.

I had a boss once who wore the same thing every day, a white long-sleeved button-down dress shirt and a pair of khakis. He even wore the same color socks every day. I asked him about it, and he said it made picking out clothes for work easier when he had ten identical outfits, five of which were out of the cleaners at any time.

I've been pretty happy with Earthlink DSL. Their news server does throttle you after 10 gigs of transfer in a 30 day period. I rarely access Usenet, so I don't know about their binary retention status. I haven't had any problems running a Shoutcast stream or using Bittorrent and Directconnect clients.

My sister-in-law supplements her income as a teacher selling on Ebay. She picks up china (and matching napkins, etc.) at outlets and salvage stores, then sells them at a significant profit. The key is to find a niche that hasn't been exploited (yet).
I myself have made a couple of bucks here and there buying limited edition vinyl indie albums, holding them for a year or so, then selling them on Ebay. Of course, my sister-in-law sells them for me (and I can take... [more]

My first check came in early February, after joining the program in November (the check was for November and December). There was a slight delay in their cutting the check, but they were up front about it in an e-mail to AdSense providers, telling us when to expect out payment.

I picked up a USB media reader for about ten bucks for this very reason. Now I just pop out the CompactFlash card on my camera into the reader, and XP recognizes it as another drive. Plus, the camera's batteries aren't worn down when I transfer files.
