What is the deal with people who are following 800 others on Twitter and have no website linked to their account? I'm talking (apparently) private citizens here, not brands. You look at their twitter page, and it's just a photo, a name, and 800 friends. What are they trying to accomplish? Do they really read all the incoming tweets? Are they just hoping to make some random selection of people interested in them?

Media Mandible
It's a very exciting time to be working in online media (advertising, publishing, and the like), and this is my blog about it.
I'm writing it partly to help myself get my next job, partly as a sort of instruction manual for the subordinates I left behind at my last one, partly to to keep my head in the game, and partly as an outlet for openly saying the sorts of things that I didn't feel comfortable saying when I was accountable to someone else.

I'm planning on going to SXSW this year. I'll probably stay for at least a few days, maybe a week.
Where should I stay? How expensive are accommodations? How far in advance must I make reservations? Are there any popular alternatives to staying in a hotel?
p.s. I don't drive.

A small, hip advertising agency with big clients seeks an entry-level person to cut his or her teeth in the art/science of media planning and buying. This is an ideal position for someone who is fresh out of school (or just sick of school), ambitious, media-savvy, and hoping for a lot of responsibility right out of the gate. In this informal, startup-esque environment full of quirky, smart people, you will never feel unnoticed or unappreciated. You'll never want to leave, but if you ever do, you won't have to pad your resume with bullshit. We give real experience here.

DaShiv is coming to NYC (fulfilling my
hope). Circa Sep. 15 to 25th. If you don't know DaShiv, he is famous for his amazing knack for stunning professional-grade candid photography, especially in meetup contexts (not that we weren't all gorgeous to begin with). We need to:
a) plan one or more meetups around his visit, with the focus being on providing good backdrops for all the pics he's going to take. I suggest at least one indoor location and one outdoor location.
b) provide places for him to stay. I can donate floor space in Hoboken for a couple of nights.
We need to do this soon so that he can confirm his flight dates and be sure that he won't be left huddled on a grate in Central Park, taking photos of rats.

Where, other than on the BlogAds network, can I run an online banner campaign for a less than $5 CPM?
I'm talking about large/established sites, networks, and portals.
Also, I'm not looking for CPC, CPA, or any kind of text advertising. This question is about cheap CPM banner advertising.

A small, hip, reputable advertising agency needs someone to help plan online advertising campaigns.
You'd be involved at every level: buying media, negotiating prices, finding new places to put ads, deciding which ads to use, researching new types of online technology, matching campaigns to websites.
I'm about to run ads right here on Metafilter, because I know the site and its audience, and I've matched that to one of the campaigns I work with. You could make that kind of decision too.
The company is small and informal, and everyone has a say in everything. If you want to be part of the creative process that actually conceives the campaign and creates the ads, then you will be.
We're talking about a tightly-knit, creative atmosphere full of intelligent people. Your intelligence, creativity, and ability (and desire) to get along with the people here are much more important than your education or experience.
That being said, you ought to be the type of person who likes spending time online, who enjoys learning about new things that the web experience has to offer.

Trailers Undone
Pithy analyses of all the latest movie trailers, cast in terms of archetypes, subgenres, and marketing strategies. I do this without actually watching the movies in question (that would be cheating). The more cinema-savvy readers will be able to consistently identify the rationale behind the use of the corresponding images, which are never from the movies being discussed.

I imagine it as a convenient place to put photos and videos (and maybe tools, like greasemonkey scripts etc.) all in one more or less neat little pile. If that doesn't catch on, at least it won't be used for anything evil.

I've seen many movie review sites that host, or link to, images from the movies. Assuming the site didn't get permission, is this legal? What if you're selling ads on the review site, or charging users a premium to view it? Or is there some way of definitively identifying a photo as a publicity still, meant to be used by anyone who isn't diluting the brand? Obviously, this extends beyond movies, to books and other products.

mefi universe search engine
I created
several custom google co-op search engines, each with matching search extensions. One of them searches the entire mefi universe, including metachat, monkeyfilter, 9622, and the sites of mefi users who volunteer (or are volunteered by others). Tabs let you refine search by the blue, green, etc., and once user sites are added, the results will be weighed so the results will be: main site, fan sites, user sites (or whatever is most popular). This is similar to mathowie's recent
offering, but covers more ground (if it's the sort of ground you want covered). Also, a search engine for finding screenplays, an engine for searching all CondeNast sites, and a link to my recently-started
blog, where I mostly ruminate on TV and movies.

I often hear people describing "lost revenue" when they mean "revenue that we expected to earn, but didn't." To me, this is an important distinction: if you never had something, you can't lose it.
Is there an alternate term to describe what I'm talking about? "Missed revenue," perhaps?

I think that deleted comments which have been favorited should continue to appear on the "posts from ___ saved as favorites" page of the user who wrote them. For example, you can look at my profile and see that my stuff has been favorited 108 times, but you can't find all 108 items, because some of them no longer exist.
If they don't, then they should at least not count toward the number of favorited comments listed on that user's page. However, the first solution is better. The fact that someone marked something as a favorite shows that it had value to someone, even though it was deleted, so it ought to be preserved.

I want to create a web application in which the user enters text into a field and clicks on a submit button, and the text is then altered based on a set of conditions and given back to the user. What's the easiest way of doing this? I have a vague idea that I should use Perl and CGI. I don't know Perl or CGI, but I do know a bit of Java, a bit about servlets and JSPs, some Visual Basic, and quite a bit about http.

The word 'others' on the 'saved as favorites' pages makes no sense and drives me batty. '2 others saved as a favorite' indicates that there is a third person. That's what the word 'others' means. Suggestion: change 'others' to 'users' or 'people' or 'assholes' or any word that is not confusing and inaccurate in that context.

Rinsing quinoa: is it really necessary? I haven't found a strainer dense enough that the quinoa doesn't get stuck in it to the point that rinsing it out is a real pain. Also, I often don't rinse it, and I don't notice any difference. Is there something inherently dirty about quinoa? I mean, it's still getting sterilized by boiling water, right? Why rinse quinoa but not rice, bulgur, etc.?
